london marathon!
after watching all those sweaty bodies finishing the london marathon, i was thinking to myself and wondering how much money was raised for charity?then it occured to me that the professionals that had entered where picking up cheques for thousands of pounds,do they donate that to there favourite charity or does it go in the back sack.Ordinary people like ourselves have gone down to the smoke on there own bat to raise monies for there charities out of there own pocket, whilst the pros have been tucked up in a top class hotel , i think all monies they have picked up should be donated back!
well done to all the normal people that ran the race for others and not there selfish selves! |
Re: london marathon!
don't really know what the top stars run for,but agree well done all the ordinary folk that we do know run for charity.

Re: london marathon!
paula radcliffe pees in the street and picks up 402.000 quid for running 26 miles, yer avin a larf why the bloody hell does she get two hundred and odd grand appearance money before shes even finished the race.how long would it take the average man/woman to earn that sort of money?we are only talking about one person here what about the rest of them that get paid for making an appearance? how much did the bloke get for winning his race double of what paula got?this countrys gone mad.

Re: london marathon!
Of course they get paid, what do you think happens to all the money that is paid by the thousands of ordinary runners in entrance fees? It goes to support the careers of people like Ms Radcliffe. Who, it might be pointed out, when asked to run for her country in the recent Olympics, collapsed in floods of tears to the disappointment of many of her teammates and the entire country. The reasons given for her refusal to complete the race on that occaision make not one grain of sense, unless you take into account the politics of the British Olympic team.
People like Paula Radcliffe know only one loyalty, and unfortunately it is not encompassed by the phrase "it is not the winning it is taking part that matters". Sadly, Athletics is now a career choice like any other and is no longer the sole preserve of the amateur. We have lost something of irreplacable value here and no one seems to realise it or even care. Would I like to see an Accrington or Hyndburn marathon? Yes, but only if it was free to enter and run solely for the honour of taking part. |
Re: london marathon!
36,500 take part, times that by 25.00 quid entrance fee =912.500 quid most which goes to our and overseas underpaid athletes, not inclusive of sponsership from companys that would sell more if they dropped there prices?

Re: london marathon!
Pro's are called pro's because they run professionally (i.e. for a living!). You may say that it is a good living to make winnng so much money from one race - but compared to footballers etc, she won't make so much money in a year. I agree that sports personalities are overpaid but there are far greedier sports and sportspeople out there than Paula Radcliffe.
It takes a lot of hard work to train at that level - she will be running over 100 miles in a week - all year round. She doesn't just turn up to a couple of races every year & win. I understand your point Tea - but you're highlighting 1 race (which she didn't even enter last year) and making a snap judgement on 1 person. |
Re: london marathon!
Sorry put Tea in above post as thought Tealeaf was thread starter - actually meant Staggeringman. Sorry for any confusion.
