The labour party are guaranteening defeat at the next election.
A parliamentary candidate should be selected on merit only.
Why should we be expected to accept less?

Is that the Harriet Harman who was lecturing us in the House of Commons the other day about how dare we question the fundemental honesty of MPs and their "legitimate" use of expenses. Nothing to do of course that she has been inbroiled in a few dodgy financial deals herself and could be anxious to move the public gaze elsewhere.

As Oscar Wilde said the more they talk about their honour the faster we counted our spoons.

As I've said before on other subjects. The right candidate for the job is the right candidate for the job and creating women only, black only short lists etc is wrong.

I do however agree with encouraging more women and more black people to come forward and stand so that there are more options for people to vote on. But when it comes down to final selection it should be done on merit only.

Wholly agree.

Obama has a good chance of becoming the next US president and you can put a bet on him being incredibly offended if he was to get there because they only allowed black candidates!

totally agree, harman is a very silly woman,as for obama, wouldn't mind a little sidebet that it dont happen, perhaps its my cynical view, but from my limited experiance in the us of a it aint gonna happen in my lifetime.

Can a political party openly advocate "white only" short-lists or would that be racist? Is racism a one-sided concept?

If the coppers can have a National Black Police Association why should politics differ, racism certainly seems to be a one way street at times

On the same lines what about a music of white origin award we o have the MOBO awards or there again white trade unions.
