days out in lancashire

i'm thinkin of taking the kids *nephs nieces* out and about this weekend

nothing too dramatic - maybe a nice drive around the country side and then buy them soem ice creams etc

i took them to slaidburn for a lil chill out and paddle in the local river etc and they really liked it so i wanted something similar again - esp as there's a local cafe there nearby too

i was thinkin something along the lines of dunsop bridge?

any other recommendations??

Technically its in Yorkshire but its not too far - Bolton Abbey - got beautiful riverside walks, an old abbey, great cafe and play area - Just follow the A59 past Skipton - its well signposted

Ribchester was always good, lovely play area, stroll along the river, can go in the Roman Museum and a good ice cream place .. haven't been for a few years mind you, but expect not changed.

Alternatively, have you tried Barley, lovely run in Pendle Witch country, great stream .. grandaughter once walked straight into it in a full dress, floated all around her... nice walks around there, few swings, ice cream chalet ... my uncle/aunt used to own all the property which is now the Barley Mow Restaurant . can't help but enjoy it. Not sure which way you will be driving, but best off the Padiham >>> Nelson road, (turn around Higham) follow the signs. Won't cost too much either.

Drive through Clitheroe & Chatburn to Downham. Nice stream runs through Downham and usually has ducks. Just on the corner in Chatburn where you turn to go to Downham there's a very good ice cream shop.

What a choice, eh ? Right on our doorstep, trick is to find somewhere away from the traffic.

Always Edisford Bridge, but too many people.

Did the Trough of Bowland run many times, stop off in the dip for picnic and ice cream and dip in the River, then off through Lancaster to Morecambe to visit Happy Mount Park.

Bolton Abbey great (as suggested), but take a waterproof ground sheet, meadow there a little soggy.

Love to hear where you finish up.

Fairhaven Lake is nice and you can play the game of 'spot the tower' on the way!

I've enjoyed a few picnics with my nephews there.

If the young 'uns are energetic and full of energy, a walk around the waterfalls trail at Ingleton, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, could be a good day out. After heavy rainfall, when the Rivers Doe and Twiss are in full spate, the waterfalls are a spectacular sight.
The walk is about 4.5 miles in total.
When I was a sprog, I used to go every year with my parents, for a walk round the waterfalls.

Talking of steam trains there is the Rossedale Rail from Rawtenstall to Bury you can hope on and off and there are walks all round the stations.
