Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Yes, it's this weekend! Saturday 18th November at Accrington Town Hall
It's completely free and it's open to everyone and anyone. Just call in for half an hour or the whole afternoon. Things going on include:- Japanese paper hat making African head wrapping Jewellery making out of felt Environmental arts Indian dance displays Environmental arts Japanese kimono demonstration Wood blocking onto calico Hessian rug making Fashion show at 2pm All this, plus much, much more packed in between 11am and 3pm. There are free refreshments and snacks as well. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
African head wrapping - does that mean we can have our heads wrapped?
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Less, Tealeaf - what is your problem?
All I'm doing is putting on an event that might appeal to some members of the community - clearly not you - but then again not everyone likes to spend all their spare hours in the pub! Every time I put a thread on about an arts event you have a go at me. Other people, on the other hand, complain that there isn't enough arts provision in the area. This event is bringing something fun into the area - just because you don't like it (or don't understand it) doesn't make it less valid. From what I understand, I posted this thread in the Nightlife and Events section of the forum. It was to inform people, who might be interested, that something was going on. If I hadn't have posted it how would people know what was happening? PS - yes, it was a typo about the Environmental arts going on twice. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Gayle I applaud your efforts and I really do believe that these shows serve as a valued service to those with a bent for it, so please don’t take this response to be totally negative.
Now then, £13 to spend the afternoon in the ****ing rain freezing my nuts off with a load of nosey sods and a couple of dodgy birds, eating manky beef burgers and no bloody ale to wash it all down Or The nice company of Accrington’s fashion set in the dry halls of the Town Hall? If you want my company Gayle I’ll see you at the Clayton End. Bring all your friends with you. :D |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Well, I can't speak for Less - but I don't have a go at you every time you highlight an arts event on here. I only do it some of the time - and this is one of them. As far as I'm concerned, art is something that looks pretty enough to hang on your wall or something that stops you in your tracks and makes you think.
"African Head Wrapping" does not fall into either of these categories, unless of course, it is an exercise in making a shrunken head to bung on top of your spear. For reasons of political correctness, this sounds unlikely. I suspect that this is all to do with wrapping a colourful piece of cloth around your head; what releveance this has to the people of Accy, I simply do not know. How much is this lot costing, anyway? |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
And that's absolutely fine Doug. Not everyone likes everything - it would be a dull world if we did but some people don't seem to accept that!
All I'm doing is putting on a colourful event with lots of different activities going on. I could put the same old boring thing on time after time - do we really want Chas 'n Dave or Meat Loaf tribute acts on every week? Football's great - I like it myself - but I also like other things and shock horror, a lot of people don't like football at all!!! What are they to do with their Saturday afternoons? |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Tealeaf's only bitter that the free refreshments and snacks won't be good old British food.;)
I think it sounds great, and more power to you Gayle for getting off your arse, securing funding and putting something on in what otherwise would be an empty Town Hall on a Saturday afternoon. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Oh, yes, I forgot the food - there is some traditional English food - cornish pasties if anyone's a bit peckish. We thought it would make a change.

Actually, we could go and have a go at wrapping heads, have some grub, wish Gayle well and still get to the Crown for one or two before Kick off. We could make a day of it I suppose.

My main concern is, will African Head Wrapping provide adequate protection against the elements during a rainy afternoon on the Clayton End? If it will, I'll be there!

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Art isn't just something to bung on the wall. I like all sorts of arty crafty things and what's wrong with having your head wrapped for fun if you enjoy it? I had a thing wrapped round my head when we were in Tunisia - you should have seen Busman in his and the long striped 'nightshirt' that went with it! :D Why shouldn't we have fun and share things like this from other cultures? Life gets far too dull otherwise.

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
[quote=Doug]What is Head Wrapping, quote]
To be honest, Doug, I'm as intrigued as anyone - from what I understand it is the skill of turning a strip of colourful fabric into headwear (sort of like a turban, I presume). |

But I've got to admit you've gone overboard yet again to put together an afternoon that really does make us blokes want to dash out and join you in these enthralling events. I personally will spend the afternoon counting how many grains of rice I can push up my nose before I have to swallow, (maybe it's not what you call art but I bet I could get a grant for it!). Now in future could you please not put T' and I in the same category, I will tolerate these none events he can't stand them, I will always tease you given the chance because I think you can, (given time), realise that's what I'm doing. So far as spending time drinking? I am always grateful to the woman that drove me to it.;) |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
I'm all for being critical when I feel it is warrented, but of course this, or any event, isn't going to interest everyone, but I'm sure a lot of folk will find something of interest here on Saturday.
There's nothing stopping other people getting off their arses to organise public events, that they and other people may enjoy. Beer festivals, Dinky car exhibitions, topless darts, if that's your bag. The only thing stopping you is apathy. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun

If you want the absolute truth, I'm getting tired of having to continually defend myself. I'm not starting fights, taking people for money they can't afford or selling drugs - I am putting on arts events. I am then taking the time to tell the local population about these arts events so that the people who are interested can come along and enjoy them. Imagine the waste of money if I put them on and no one came! Yes, it may be overboard, but why the heck not! It's not meant to be serious, it's fun - fun is right there in the title. As for the rice thing - you should have made that suggestion in Tinkerbelle's Children in Need thread - we could have had a sponsored 'how many grains of rice can Less stick up his nose' event, a bit like 'how many sweets in a jar' sort of thing. :D |

I didn't say it to get you to start a fight, I said it because usually Gayle can have a laugh, what do I do from now on? Oh I'll not tease Gayle she doesn't like it or do I tease Gayle and remind her she has a good sense of humour, (for a woman!). |

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Them what likes it can go to it, them what doesn't can stay at home or go somewhere else - no problem there. Is there?
Normally of a Saturday I'd be in Blackburn not doing Irish dancing but this weekend it's off so I am free to participate in other thngs, or not, as the case may be. :) |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
I have no problem about staying at home or even of this event taking place in t'Town Hall; my concern is that this is publicly funded and that it is not the first time this has happened this year. It appears to be a sequel to the 'International Wimmins Week bash' which occured only a few months ago.
In my opinion the taxpayer has more important prioritities than subsidising Japanese kite flying, lesbian basket weaving or African hair curling, or whatever multi-cultural clap-trap happens to be on this weeks menu. If we are to have such subsidised events, then surely we should have one for the blokes, just to even things up? Could not the town hall be taken over one saturday, so that we could see, amongst other things: model train layouts, a mini beer festival, footy cards and programme swapping and maybe up one corner, some pole-dancing and stripping action by the fairer sex? |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Haven't there been beer festivals?
How about the other ideas Gayle? Would females be allowed to see the train sets T? |

The group that have organised this event are Hyndburn Women's Forum - so naturally, it is going to have a bias towards events targeted at women! You want a men's group and you want men's events so go on and do it! I won't object. |

I am fairly sure though Gayle that if they did organise something you would keep your gob shut and not criticize their hard work. I can imagine how much time and effort you have put into this event, its a shame others can't. |

Is there a lottery fund for creeping Neil? haha
I happen to agree with every single word you just posted. It still looks creepy though ...sorry :) Plus I will be there sat morning.. |

I more or less said the same thing in post 31. 'There's nothing stopping other people getting off their arses to organise public events, that they and other people may enjoy. Beer festivals, Dinky car exhibitions, topless darts, if that's your bag. The only thing stopping you is apathy.' Perhaps the lap dancers could also teach adult literacy. When you've organised and secured funding for it let us know Tealeaf, as I will look forward to attending.:) |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun

It ain't no tax. I chose not to play, along with millions of others. If the bit that is syphoned off for 'good causes' can then be secured for something in this area, good luck to 'em. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
And I think people sometimes forget where the money really goes to - the local economy.
For instance - the paying the town hall for a day's rent, that employs local people and pays them overtime for working on Saturday. The people who are supplying the food - again local companies who are doing the catering. Admittedly at this event there are a couple of workshop artists that I've brought in from different areas of the country because I wanted a more international flavour but at least three quarters of the money spent on this event is put directly back into the local economy. I hardly think that is a waste of money. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
I have had a brief over view from Jen, but how did in go for you Gayle and the other that went and when can we see some photos……
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
It looked great, though I had to miss the show when I found out my Mum had arranged a suprise visit from my Scottish friends, so had to dash home before she started rooting about too much.
Had a very interesting chat with a woman from Liverpool, who was the same age as me and did fashion whilst I was also studying in the city. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Theres me thinking you where skulking away backstage... couldn't find ya anywheres:)
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Have to say that the event did not go down as well as hoped. We simply didn't get the audience we expected or wanted. A few reasons,
Weather - it was horrendous and the town was really quiet Proximity to Christmas - everyone that was in town was there with a purpose The recent tragedy meant that none of the Asian ladies were able to turn out. It was a real shame but heck, you can't win them all. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Kipax, are you able to put them on that website with a temporary password so that I can vet them first?
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Yes I will be putitng them on there later... hr or two.. in middle of em now :)
The town was empty when I went.. it was hail storms and pouring rain... It had to be summat pretty special to get people through that.... As for it being near crimbo.. well to be fair thats hardly a variable :) |

Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Oh well if we are allowed to see them it would be nice because I was disappointed not to be able to catch even the end of it with you closing up early.
What with doctors and other things yesterday I just couldn't have managed to get there any earlier.:( |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
The event was originally scheduled for 15th October but we ended up cancelling it. We then had to rearrange it but had to hold it before Christmas because we had to spend the money before then.
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
It does point out why we're so dependent on outside funding for this type of event - we'd simply not have been able to put this on if we'd not been subsidised.
I know Tealeaf thinks these things are a waste of money and on this occassion, I've got to say that the number of people that came did mean that it was not great value for money. My only defence for that is that we tried something different at no risk to the purses of the people of Hyndburn. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
I'm not bothered kipax you can put them on of me - at least I can say i did it!:D By the way can you do me a favour - my brother said he wants to see what i looked like so can you send them me and i'll pay you for them if you tell me how much. Thanks
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
You looked glorious Jen, thank you for volunteering to take part.
|

I know I take the p*** Gayle and I do like to jump on the band wagon now and again. But I believe that no matter the size of your audience, it’s the fact that you get off your arse and do something for the greater community that impresses me. Like you say, you can’t win them all. But at least next time people will remember and maybe they’ll make the effort. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
I agree.. its the people who get up and do it more important then the people sat at a computer moaning about it...

I think overall circumstances were just against you this time Gayle. Hopefully next time you do one it will be better attended and I hope I'll be able to make it. At least I got there this time even if I was too late - I didn't even get to Moorhead at all!
You never know, I might even be able to participate next time. :) |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
By the way Gayles show was brilliant. You could make bracelets, necklaces, brooches - i did and im wearing it now, out of junk stuff, you could have a go and making a rag rug, be face painted, henna painted which i refused - could imagine Gayles face if i'd been done up like a tiger going down the catwalk, be african head dressed - which i did, make a mask, and there was cornish pasties and indian food to eat. There was also a japanese woman who told the history of the kimono and dressed a volunteer up in one. There was indian dancers and they were very good. They also told the history of the indian dance. They even got the mayor and mayoress up dancing. Then there was some dancers doing an eastern dance and a gentleman playing the Sitar (that is how you spell it isnt it? If it isnt there is an edit button here!) Then the Fashion Show. There was 7 of us altogether. 6 wore indian clothes and then me - had a nigerian Akko if thats how you spell it. Anyway you will see the pictures - kipax took them. Anyway it was a very good show.
Ok thats what i posted on Burnley web. |
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
The fashion show was shortened considerably because the audience (what few there were to start off with) was starting to leave at that time.
|
Re: Fashion, Fabric and Fun
Ah that explains why I assumed the piccies would be shown here on AccyWeb.
I still wish I'd managed to catch that jewellry making from junk. |
