Myself and the wife went to the Grey Mare on grane rd. Belthorn yesterday, The menu was varied, food was excellent, staff were very helpfull mand polite and the prices quite low...I had a 10oz ribey steak with all the trimmings, cost 7.95, the wife had hawiain gammon covered in melted cheese and pineapple cost 6.95!

This place is well worth a visit but be warned it does get very busy on sunday afternoons!
p.s. Does serve until 8:00 on sundays.

went to Buffet on Friargate in preston last night, its a chinese with All you can eat,and thats everything had 5 platefuls and it was all first rate, the bill for 6 of us including all the drinks was only £68,odd, our friends who have been before say its about £2 per head cheaper at weekends, cos they dont have the king prawns @ mussels on, paris and i were that stuffed we missed breakfast today which is unheard of in this house. so if you love a chinky would definately recommend this place.;)

mmm,mmmm.

Last year I would have agreed with you. We went 3 times and each time the food and the service were spot on.

But, after eating there yesterday (Sunday evening), I have to report a big dissapointment in both.

When we arrived at 6pm, the "front of house" was clearly having a bad day as earlier customers who were just leaving asked "why he was being so rude".

Ok so you can't please everyone.

We were shown to our table and given our menus, but not asked whether we wanted to order any drinks. Eventually a waitress returned and took our food orders, just mains, no starters (we had already been up to the bar to fetch our own drinks).

By 7pm, there was no sign of our food and we were getting restless, (also our glasses were getting empty). The waitresses were clearly waiting for some action from the kitchen and apologised for our delay and reassured us that our order would be coming shortly.

The food arrived about 15 mins later, but it was not worth the wait. The beef was tough and the small dish of over-cooked veg between 4 people just added insult to injury.

With so many large pub chains offering very average pub food, the Walton Arms used to be a breath of fresh air. Let's hope this was just a "bad day" and not the standard of things to come.:mad:

Last week we went to The Alma at Laneshaw Bridge.:D

The food was really well cooked and nicely presented (chunky chips in "Jenga" style blocks).

They have an extensive menu and offer a discount on some of the standard dishes for lunch-time customers.

Very relaxed atmosphere and friendly service.:D:D:D

Always had good meals at the Whittakers Arms on Burnley Road.
Had the reception after the wedding there and everything was wonderful from the food to the service.

Must admit Padiham Lass, don't think a one-off with the Walton. I went there as a joint meal for myself and son's birthdays mid June ... very disappointing to what it used to be. My chicken caesar salad with saute potatoes tasted all the same ... you know that chargrilled/oily taste.. yuk. Didn't think anyone could get this wrong, but they did.

My son had the lamb, didn't complain, there again he would eat a hedgehog if put in front of him. Service was slow too.

One of the benefits of liking steak blue is that it can never be undercooked! :D

They can always cremate it a bit more for you cashy!

It amazes me how many people like their steak "well done" when really this means " tough and dried out"

when doing my catering C&G the chef blindfolded a group of students and fed them steak, some rare, some med and some well done. they were asked which was tastiest and it was unanimous for rare, even teh girls who went "Urrrggghhhh" when they saw what they had eaten agreed it was by far teh tasiest and tender

Went to the old King Street club last night to what is now an Indian buffet style restaurant(Massalla,i think it's called)and very good it was too,if,like me,you like filling your face for as little cash layout as possible.About 40 dishes to choose from(though i was dissapointed to only manage 37).If theres no indian dish on display that you want the chef will knock it together for you if you request it.Beware the Cobra beer though....£2.75 a pint.£42 for me & the missus for food + 2 pints & & 2 bottles of plonk:)

Taggy 23-07-2008 18:22

Re: Places to eat or not to eat.

I just dont think the place looks right though!...Still looks like a club thats been done out as an indian! The red lighting effect is ghastly! I cant comment on the food, because we did'nt have any. We called in a couple of Saturdays ago, early evening about 7.30. Not many in, but did'nt really think there would be at that time. We sat in the Bar area, but nobody came to us. Another couple came in to have a look around, so we did the same and went into the dinning area, but just did,nt like the look of the place, very impersonal and not at all relaxing. We had a look at what was on offer, an the waiter did say if we would like something different, the chef would try to accomodate. But we just did not like the feel of the place at all, bit like a school or works canteen feel about it really, with bits of curry slopped over the sides of the bain maries, and that strange lighting!! We just did'nt want to eat there by the time we had looked, so we left and went to the Mitalli again instead!

Julie and I like the mongolian

The food is good value as you literally each as much as you like

The wine is so so price wise but soft drinks and beer are a bit expensive.

All in if you are looking for somewhere for a full night of enjoyment it is brill, if you want to eat and run then maybe not so.

Re: Places to eat or not to eat.

Lucy, the owner is very nice and friendly. I think the quality of the food is ok, but certainly nothing special. Its not much different to a chinese really apart from the buffet element. I was a bit surprised to find that all the meats are precooked though, and just "Woked" for a second time when you've chosed which you want.

Sorry to necropost ... tee hee.

Got this from The Herald .... The Kingfisher which is just through the Barden Mill car park. Overlooks the canal marina, and as the report stated is a little gem. They have a balcony around the cafe where you have lovely views, and the food is lovely. Went with a friend on Tuesday and had their speciality of cheese and onion pie, which was presented in one of those brown oval dishes with a small crust on top served with lovely chunky chips and salad. Yummee. The staff are lovely and accommodating.

Great lunch time eating. Course is better if the sun is shining and you can eat on the balcony. Here are the views as you eat:

Well my recommendation would be for two places, firstly the Calfs Head at Worston, I've lost count how many times I've been and I've never had a bad meal. We have nearly all our family celebration meals there. The staff are really friendly too

The second is my personal favourite, The Villa Italian restaurant, Clitheroe. This is owned and run by the fella that used to own papa luigis on church street (when it was very good, not when it changed hands), he has even kept the original chef too. It is situated on the main road into clitheroe from the A49. It is a stone built townhouse style builing with parking at the back. Its decorated like an italian villa but there is something different too, the bar is downstairs and appears to bea cave carved out of the stone foundations!! To the rear of the building behind the bar is a stone terrace with fountains and places to sit out in good weather, with a large stone stair case leading down to the car park. It is a truely beautiful place to eat and the staff are really friendly. Although it isn't particularly cheap it isn't expensive for the quality of food and the eating experiance as a whole. You do need to ring and book at weekends too as it does get very busy.

I know that this is an "if", but it is possible: if you are ever lucky enough to be in the beautiful City of Kingston, situated on Lake Ontario at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River with a view of the Thousand Islands, try Chez Piggy ... known locally as "the pig". Situated on lower Princess St., minutes from the lake, this restaurant was started about thirty years ago by the late Zal Yanovsky in a rennovated limestone stable. Some of you might remember Zal as the bass guitarist in the "Loving Spoonful". Try the "Mussels Provencal" for only $16.00 .... if you have a little more cash: "Moroccan Rack of Lamb with Charmoula" .... fantastic! But a little more pricy at $34.00.

I think that the last flight to Toronto's Pearson Airport leaves Norman Rogers airport at around 11:00 pm.; from there you will be able to fly to Heathrow and make a connecting flight to get you home. Trouble is, the bus service here sucks; so, you will have to take a cab from the Toucan to the airport.;) How's Morcambe these days; my mom used to love it?

There's even a Timmy's in Kandahar so that the troops serving there won't get withdrawal symptoms ... and if you go through the drive through with your dog, the local outlets will offer you the choice of a Timbit for the dog, or a dog biscuit. Vets recommend the dog biscuit; dogs recommend the Timbit. There is a rumour that Canada will establish its sovreignty in the Arctic by building a Timmy's at the North Pole.;):D

Morecambe is like most UK seaside towns these days, pretty on the sea front and a bit grubby if you look behind the curtains. I am happy living here though, I would rather stroll here than anywhere else I have visited.

Went to the Spice Rooms at Rising Bridge last sunday for their all you can eat indian buffet and I have to say it was probably the best I have been to.
A choice of 5 starters :- Onion Bhajis, Chicken Pakora, Vegetable Pakora, Keema stuffed Mushrooms and something I had never had before, Lamb Garlic (very tender lamb tikka in a tasly garlic sauce) all of which were very nice (the Lamb Garlic was amazing!).
A choice of 5 Main dishes :- The staple Chicken Tikka Massala was accompanied by 4 other dishes that I'd never seenon a buffet before, Atchari Kofta, Chicken Handi, Lamb Saag and another I had never seen before Vegetable ArgiBhaji, all were very good but the Atchari Kofta was delicious.
There was also a selection of salad items, pilau rice, garlic naan and poppadums and pickles.

we will definately be going back due to the quailty of fair on offer and also because of the variety. Plus £9.99 isn't bad for an all you can eat indian and the drinks weren't overly expensive either all set in very pleasant surroundings.

Don't go to the Postal Order in Blackburn for food, it has really gone downhill since we where last there, the place stinks, the seats stink and the presentation of the food is awful, Reece got a panini and chips, the panini was hard and resembled a cricket bat, the chips where dry and there was about 5 of them, i had the worst jacket potato with chilli that i've ever had, it was not much bigger than a golf ball with a spoonfull of chilli in it, the side salad consisted of a lettuce leaf and 2 cherry tomatoes, 'all' this for a tenner.....and a smell, won't be going there again

You can only get a copy of the inspection by doing a freedom of information request from the Council.

I think all the inspection reports should be freely downloadable. I also think the establishment should have to display is rating in a very prominent place, a bit like a taxi has to have its license on show.

This would push the poor places into making improvements or they would get less trade.

Would you go and eat at a place with a zero rating stuck on the front door?

and with a rating of 5

we when there tonight flashy.
food was very average but not rubbish and the only strong smell was my lambs navy rum.Must have caught it on a good night though because i got 7 chips :D

Went to O'marleys Red Lion ( back to original name ) off whitebirk roundabout last night. Anyone else been ?
You can eat or drink in bar if you want but we eat in the nice back restaurant section.
They have large menu but we decided on the £ 8.95 for 2 courses menu.
We had prawn cocktail and pate, then braised steak and a lasagna, had glasss of red wine each,All Very nice indeed.
They also do main course and drink deal £6.95 before 7 pm midweek.
First time ever been so would be interesting to see if anyone else has tried it and if its always decent.:)

We have been to the Grey Mare on Grane Rd a couple of times recently - food was excellent, staff efficient and courteous - and the Bomber was superb, but only one pint as I was driving.

The Grey Mare has been a quite good eating place for many years, can remember going there for a meal when I lived in Hassy and thats 25 years ago
