Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
Instead of our so called leaders moaning about no one knowing where Hyndburn is.. Lets put it on the map so everyone knows.. thats the difference between moaning and doing.. Well done Gayle Knight

Does this mean we might get the panopticon in the park that I asked our Council Leader about the other week?

Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
I haven't read the article in the Observer yet so I don't know what has been said about it or not.
Basically, it's the Leader's idea - and I'm managing it - yes, that's right, Cllr Britcliffe and I are working together on this project. It was mentioned briefly at Cabinet about three weeks ago but of course, it will be fully launched in early January 2009. The idea is to make a big splash about a couple of centenary's that will be celebrated next year - Haworth Art Gallery, The Coppice, Rhyddings Park - and to create a buzz about arts in general. Anyone who knows about any events or activities that are open to the public (doesn't matter if its free or if there's a charge) but it must be for the public, should let me know by emailing [email protected] Without wanting to sound too evangelical about it, there are a lot of good things happening in Hyndburn at the moment and it's good that the arts have been put back on the agenda. By creating a place where you can find something to do easily - this should get more people involved. For example, I'm expecting it to be particularly useful when it comes to school holidays to find places to take your children, or at the weekend when you can't decide what to do. |
Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
Just this minute read about it in the Observer.
Sounds a very good idea. Good to see party politics put to one side for the benefit of the borough. (Please not that this is the fourth time I've praised PB this year.);) |
Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
I've just read the article and it does make it sound like it was my idea, my campaign and me presenting it all to the council but that really wasn't the case.
It's a council initiative that I'm managing and I was giving the cabinet an update on it (along with a few other things). Cabinet meetings are open to the public and the press attend so they heard the presentation there. Obviously, I'm pleased it's getting some publicity but not overly happy that it makes me sound like some sort of crusader working on my own. |
Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
I thought you came out of it well.. hence my OP :)

Fantastic Gayle :) I shall keep this bookmarked for when I'm back in dearest Lancashire. :D
Although I must ask, can one assume £600,000 isn't going into the website? ;) |
Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
One can most certainly assume that Andrew.
It has cost less than £50 to set up and my time during the year to manage - which, whilst I would be thrilled if it came to £600,000 won't even come close to being a quarter of a percent of that! |

Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
Is it cultural things going on in hyndburn co-ordinated or is it a celebration of hyndburn through culture..

The website is the co-ordination of cultural things going on in Hyndburn. The over all aim is to create buzz around culture in 2009 and for it to kickstart a number of initiatives so that when we look back in 10 years time we can say that was the year it all started. Not necessarily a celebration of Hyndburn through culture as such BUT undoubtedly many of the things that happen next year will hang on celebratory events. |

Gayle
Like hell it was Peters idea, just ask Lynne Wilson who worked on this idea with her for a good part of last year. I'm not often compelled to comment on Accy Web but credit where credits due please. Panoptican in Rhyddings Park, excellent idea Neil, do you want me to put it to Mid-Pennine next time I'm over there? LOL |

I'll have to adjust my tally, if as you say this wasn't Britcliffe's baby. :D |

Sorry Clare. All I was trying to say was that I didn't have the original idea so I didn't want crediting for it. As it happens I do, after dredging through my memory, remember a meeting a long time ago when the idea was brought up as a concept. To be honest, i don't want to get in the middle of a political battle on this because it's such a good idea that I don't want it spoiling. I'm happy to give credit where it's due though. |

Re: Hyndburn 2009 year of Culture
I do believe that the European City of Culture for 2009 is to be the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, best known up to now as being the place to go for a weekend's p**s up. However, it seems to me that, seeing as the Russkies are up to their old tricks again, the place could get invaded next year, so it may be best to stay at home. The alternative (for all you culture vultures like me) would be to have a couple of weeks in Hyndburn and participate in this splendid initiative (apparently thought up by everybody in the town).
We have already had a foretaste of things to come with the audience reaction to Jekyl and Hyde, which provoked a level of critical comment and audience participation rarely seen outside London's Globe Theatre. So maybe we could get one of the IT boys on here to stick a link on to the Vilnius culture website so that every time someone hits they are redirected to the Hyndburn one. If the jobs done right, then the borough could expect a good couple of million visitors next year. |
