Why not organise one then? It is a serious answer.

Going back a good few years the George Hotel ( don't know what it is now) on Blackburn Road , used to tag on to the end of the burnley Colne Blues Fest:

Maybe the Stanley St Club could do something.... they sometimes have live acts on:

As well as paid artists, that club/pub hosts a jamming session for local artists every Monday night

Yes, it does look very nice, but I rather think you may feel a little out of place there, mate. Scroll down to the bottom picture and take a look at some of the pictures on the walls to find out why! ;)

O.K. so you want to see something live, well if you go to the Railway this Saturday at 8 p.m. you will be able to see:-

The Inca Thieves

They are supposed to be an excellent indy band, (whatever that is), with their own original material.

I hope you not only go and enjoy, but also,

A/ Mention that you saw them advertised on accyweb to everyone there.

and

B/ Take some time to tell us how much you enjoyed the show.

If you now come on here saying you couldn't put the effort in to go, then don't complain if this turns out to be the last 'live act' on show in there.

Well no response from the starter of this thread.

Will any other accywebbers be turning up?

I hope so, because if this proves successful, maybe they'll put something else on that I and others like me might enjoy, but if no-one goes, where is the point of complaining about no live music?
Let's all just stop in and let the rubbish karaoke crowds keep dominating our pubs!

i think accy should have a music festival , i know my pub the calder would have a few groups on , every pub should get involved , maybe get a task force on it , anybody wishing to help should pop in and speak to me

If you can't go to your local pub after a hard day down the pit - in the mill - on the building site or in the engineering works or local factory and have a fag and a pint It's time to give up.
Sorry I seam to be in a time warp.:jimbo::jimbo::hidewall:

Out of curiosity how do you think it would work?

How many pubs do you think would get involved or have the capacity to host bands? What would be the market - what type of music?
When would be a good time - summer? How many people go down town these days?

I see the beginning of an idea so just need more suggestions.

quickjet71 12-12-2008 21:11

Re: Whats happening in accrington

worked in many areas that have done this type of thing but can go a few ways 1 , council would have to get involved and then streets , would be closed , then maybe few headline bands would play in front of hyburn council , maybe like the xmas switch lights switch on , then at night each pub would have there own type of bands on , think each calder would have indy bands but some would have rock , depends what your music you play,

all depends on people getting involved

Gayle 12-12-2008 21:21

Re: Whats happening in accrington

So the free concert put on the street would be early in the evening - say 6pm - 8pm, then the pubs would put bands on for the rest of the evening?

Would be good if it was summer (hopefully warm) so that people would be happy outside.

cashman 12-12-2008 21:27

Re: Whats happening in accrington

that has the makings of a good idea to me.

lancsdave 12-12-2008 21:27

Re: Whats happening in accrington

I think once you start opening these things up to a street concert the police are likley to become very cautious. Colne's event has gone downhill and is much more confined to the pubs since it became a haven for morons drinking on the streets, especially under-age. Shame really because thats what made it a success in the first place, but like anything else the minority always spoil it.

cashman 12-12-2008 21:29

Re: Whats happening in accrington

think broadway could be used for street bands, after the shops close, no traffic problem there.

Oswaldtwistle was one of the Lancashire mill towns caught up in the power loom riots of 1826. The arrival of the spinning jenny and the power loom led to increased mechanisation within the textile industry and, as a result, many textile workers were made redundant. Those that continued working did so for extremely low pay and starvation became a real issue in northern mill towns. In protest, a large number of angry cotton workers attacked the White Ash mill in Oswaldtwistle and destroyed looms and other equipment.

It can work out well ... every year in Kingston we have a Bluesfest weekend, usually in summer to catch the tourist dollar ... and on a winter weekend (no specific one) ... there is a Battle of the Bands, when all the pubs and clubs have live music performed by local artists. Whatever one decides tho'; local govt. and local business has to be involved.
