Hms Illustrious in Liverpool
Day out for you this weekend maybe ...
HMS Illustrious in Liverpool - The Official Tourist Information Website for Liverpool and Merseyside for those of you interested in the navy and ships .. but theres a flypast on friday of 40 aircraft On 23 October 2009 the Royal Navy will be paying tribute to 100 years of naval aviation with a spectacular flypast over the UK's strike carrier, HMS Illustrious, in Liverpool. The flypast will consist of 40 current and historic Royal Navy aircraft including Merlin, Sea King and Lynx helicopters, Falcon and Hawk jets, 2 GR9 Harriers, 4 Fireflys and classic Naval favourites, the Seafire and Sea Fury. The aircraft will form a sequence of formations flying along the River Mersey and passing directly over the carrier. |
Re: Hms Illustrious in Liverpool
I wonder how many people realise the massive contribution the British made to naval aviation: the first aircraft carrier, the first Pearl Harbour style raid (the Japanese learned from the damage the Swordfish torpedo bombers did to the Italian fleet; the Americans didn't), the angled flight deck, the catapult etc.
