Happy Mount Park - Morcambe

took Reece to Morcambe today and had a wander down to Happy Mount Park, now i havent been since i was a kid and oh my god how good is it now? they have opened a new part of the park that is made entirely out of wood, they have used tree branches to make a kind of maze, they have a zip slide, a big water fountain area for the kids, the swing boats and trampolines that have been there since i was a kid, they still have the tiny railway and the crazy golf and puttin green, they have a small restaurant and a japanese garden and a nature walk, its well worth going for the day with the kids, the only things that really cost you are the railway (a quid) the swingboats and trampolines (a quid each)

I might get my boyfriend to take me there tomorrow if the weather is still nice. I don't think I've ever been but there is a lovely quiet beach in Morecambe that we'll be going to anyway so I might just nag him a bit and get him to take me there as well!

Re: Happy Mount Park - Morcambe

did you know that the sand in Morecambe has all been imported? there is a tiny stretch of beach that was only 'made' 3 years ago just further down than the Midland Hotel, the reast of the beaches are made from mud, thats the only bit of beach (with sand) you will find in Morecambe Blazey and it certainly isn't quiet, i only know this because we took a tour bus to the park yesterday and the conductor told us

Why not Cashy .. they love it. What harm would they do ? As long as you pick up their pooh of course.

I always loved Happy Mount Park .. haven't been for a few years though (all charges grown up now). Neil .. did you notice if they still have the lights in there ? Realise you will have left before dusk.

Wow a positive thread about Morecambe - thanks folks.
Makes a change from the usual comments we get about how bad it is, normally from people who haven't been for many years.
Anyone with kids and on a budget should bring a picnic, catch a bus to Heysham and then walk back along the promenade (3 mile 'ish' and on the flat). There is a lot to see and the whole way is pram, pushchair and wheel chair friendly.
If you are celebrating, try high tea at the Midland but avoid it on hot days unless you like to be roasted.

Ex Pat, what is there at Heysham? i was looking at the buses that went that way the other day, is there anything that way for the kids?

we are taking our bikes next time we go, it's dead flat and ideal for bike riding

Dogs can get those anywhere Cashy...'if'. Even in Milnshaw Park ;) Easier to pick up though, shovel sand over it, then shovel it up. :D

No, they always had fairy lights and illumination features ... very pretty.

I would love to see lights in all our parks in Hyndburn, Neil. Quite romantic. :)

Sadly my grandparents moved to Morecambe.

The last time I went to the park they'd just opened a Wombles Tunnel.

Is it still there?

Hopefully the over touchy feely Uncle Bulgaria won't be, and is now safely behind bars.

When I retired in 1994, I spent 2 days a week for 2 years living with my mum in Morecambe, so that I could do all her housework and such.

Many of the old folk who lived in the sheltered accommodation were afraid to go out because of the high instance of muggings by the other half of the population who were unemployed living in the bed and breakfast places.

I got her bulk shopping at Asda Lancaster on the way in, but sometimes she had forgotten to ask for something in our phone call the night before, so I needed to shop in Morecambe centre.
I found that I was queuing at checkouts behind people buying only basics - tea sugar bread marg and spuds, and whole families were visiting the nearby chip shop daily, and surviving on chips and gravy.

It may have wonderful sunsets and a new promenade, but I wouldn't live there, even rent free.

Is this place (Happy Mount Park) the place where they used to have Morcambe 'illuminations', going back 50 odd years ,once went on one of Walter Barnes 'coaches' they were rubbish nowhere near as good as Blackpool

Yes, to rival Blackpool Illuminations, Morecambe had their own Son et Lumière in Happy Mount Park.

Stubby candles in jam jars, hung from the bushes, accompanied by the sound of pensioners from Bingley, sat in shelters, singing 'I'm H-A-P-P-Y'.

:D

I knew your parents had retired there.

Odd really, your parents, and my grandparents being friends and neighbours for so many years, and them all moving there.

It does have beautiful sunsets, and the view across the Bay can be stunning, but the place is dreary to me.

Easter holidays in the seventies. Grey, rain lashed, deserted, and sad.

God's waiting room, for folk who thought Blackpool too racy.

:D

Re: Happy Mount Park - Morcambe

I wondered how long it would be before the negative comments started.
With regards to the B&B's converted to DHSS doss houses, I agree there is a problem but fortunately it is limited to one area, a part of the West End. we, as Morecambe residents avoid walking in that area at night.
I wouldn't say this is a Morecambe problem though as my Nephew, who still lives in Accrington was mugged walking down Eagle Street at 4pm in the afternoon. Most towns have their 'rough' areas and I don't know what the various parts of Accrington are like at the moment but I remember Fern Gore, Woodnook and a little further afield, Huncoat being places to avoid in daylight never mind night time.

As regards Heysham, there is very little to do although they do have a few nice cafes for the refreshment fans.
If you are bringing your bikes, pick up the Cycle Path leaflet from Tourist Information as there are many of them to explore based mainly on the numerous old railway lines.

With regards to the weather, if it is raining it is miserable here but isn't that the same anywhere unless you dig deep into your pockets and do something inside.

Happy Mount Park did used to have illuminations many years ago but they were spoilt by miserable folk from Hyndburn complaining they weren't as good as Blackpool. I remember walking around bay from the Midland hotel and seeing the magical site of lights following the curved line. Then we went into Happy Mount Park and saw the Tableaux.

It was magical!

Incidentally, I did like going to Happy Mount Park as a child. Which I did often, whilst my grandpa played balls. The facilities there were very good, and it's heartening to hear that it's still seen as an asset, and worthy of investment.

I have been to Morecambe recently, and was impressed at the imagination that's gone into making the seafront appealing. The shops were disappointing. Pound shops and discount stores, replacing the independents of old.

The Midland Hotel is a national treasure, and looks magnificant.
