Whats happened to the Mela?
Well, it's that time of year when Gayle usually pops up on here with an advertisement for a waste of taxpayers money and an exercise in cultural apartheid, a.k.a the Accy Mela.
So far, we've heard nowt. Do I take it therefore, that this nonsense has finally been stopped? If so, all I can say is Rejoice! Rejoice! |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Saw a sign for this years at Oak Hill Park gates today. Thought it said this saturday but didn't stop to check it out.
However they are going to have to manage on a £6000 budget this year as it has been slashed in half by Government Cuts. I suggest that they don't hire any sound equipment or speakers this year and then we will all get a bit of peace |

Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Oh no...I thought it was to good to be true. And I'm back up there this weekend...or at least that was the plan. I just hope it does not throw it down and it's relocated to the Sports Centre in Church...that was a nightmare a year or two ago.
Moderators - Please close this thread down now! Do not give any unneccessary publicity to this 'event'! |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
No, I am sure there was an article in the lancashire Telegraph that it was going to be on again this year.
Not something I would attend.......not keen on loud music and ethnic food....must be my age or something. |

Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
May I just say that you are really mean Tealeaf. I went last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, was a good mix of (what to me) was alternative music linked with a friendly atmosphere.
I wouldn't attend any Rock Concerts, but certainly wouldn't pray for it to be stopped or to rain on the day, just because it would just be painful to my ears. Like the T.V. there is an 'off button' ... just don't go. :p |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Quote:
And yes Kate you are right.......you don't have to go(thank goodness)...but I do feel for the folk who live close to the venue....their off button has been 'disabled'. |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Oak Hill Park is not set in a heavy residential area and even the houses surrounding the venue are not that close.
I think its great to have some sort of activity these days to liven up the town. There should be more in the way of varying concerts using our new band stand throughout the summer. |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Anyway, it was people living near the park that campaigned for the band stand to be rebuilt, so presume they did wish that it be used for various concerts.
|
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Kate.....I am quite a good distance from All Saints School, but when they had an open day I could hear it quite plainly....same for the Lark in the park...I could hear that too.......so I certainly wouldn't want to be living in the houses in Manchester Road, Hollins Lane or the vicinity....and there is a vast difference between band music and Bhangra/disco/alternative stuff.
If I lived there I would have to take myself out for the day....to Southport! |

Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
I live close to Oak Hill Park and don't have the opportunity to "switch off" the volume on the day. Just remember if you visit it for a couple of hours then that is what you listen to. I have to listen all day
Maybe the Mela should alternate round the parks in the borough as it's a cultural event for all and then more people would be able to join in and "Enjoy the atmosphere" A quick question does the £6000 go to local business for hire of marquees etc or does it go to companies outside the area. |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Oh well, perhaps we should cancel all events that create some sort of noisy atmosphere with people gathering together for entertainment.
Could start with the Carnival, then move onto the noise of the crowds at Crown Green on Saturdays. Have they banned the vuvuzela by the way, like some Football Clubs ? Just think is a miserable attitude. |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
An invitation to residents of the Oakhill Park area:
Don’t fancy subjecting your ears to the Mela all afternoon on Saturday? Worry not, help is at hand! Come along to the Stanley v Aldershot match for an exciting, fun family day out! First game of the season, so a good atmosphere is guaranteed. Afterwards, you can go in the Sports Lounge to watch the Man of the Match presentation and mingle with the players. Then, by the time you return home, the whole shebang will be winding down and you’ll have enjoyed a great afternoon’s entertainment into the bargain! |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
It might sound like a miserable attitude, but it isn't really.......the Carnival is a procession and so the noise is distributed......it isn't something that is constant.
And when it does reach the field where it ends I think perhaps the celebrations are less intrusive. Those folk who live near the Stanley ground know what this entails and obviously are happy to put up with it for 90 minutes or so...if they weren't then they would move.....it is a different kind of noise too. I'm just very glad I live a long way from this venue....I would hate it to be across the road from me.......and if that is miserable then I can live with it. |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
As they say Wynonie .. all subjective.
Yes ... go and watch the footie I say as an alternative .... support the events in our town. :) |

I am glad that it is not within earshot of me.
It has the same nuisance value as those 'raves' which were in vogue a few years ago. The difference with this one is that it is council sanctioned and public funded:eek: |
Re: Whats happened to the Mela?
Quote:
Yes, John, you are right....and a public park conjures up peace and flowers and green space....and perhaps an occasional Band concert in the summer...very nice and pleasant, but not smelly food and loud music......this kind of stuff should be in a farmers field somewhere well away from a residential area. As I said, I am glad it is miles away from me. |

Panic At The Mela!!! "Chaos broke out a the Mela today at Oakhill Park as children were frightened after having their faces painted. This was nothing to do with what was painted on their faces, but the fashion tips being handed out by a gentleman in flower power pyjama's. The children were so shocked at his tips that they were running around in shock. One parent when asked why it had started replied " The gentleman was giving advice on how to dress sixties style and this paniced my son as he belived he would have to dress like his great granfather did in those days. It was too much for him to bear and could need counciling to help him recover." The gentleman in question would only say that; " those were the best days there have ever been." He was last seen heading in the direction of a research centre after being sacked as a fashion advisor. |

"Psychedelic Outrage at public festival" An elderly resident of Accrington caused a major stir at this years Mela as he wandered round the local festival offering fashion advice to youngsters of various ethnic backgrounds. The said resident a Mr.Jaysay, of secured accommodation was seen to be wearing a flower power sleepy suit & when questioned about Afghan, he said "Today was rather warm so I left my coat at home !" One visitor, Mr Ali Akbar Achmed said, "We found it all rather bemusing as surely this gentleman is aware we prefer baggy pants & flowing gowns as our chosen attire & a rather fetching black potato sack effect for our wives ! Maybe if it was in black we would consider it". On being escorted back to his secure lodgings by two rather burly chaps in white coats, Mr Jaysay was heard to comment "These kids today, no idea of fashion, I was an icon in my day I'll have you know!" as he was bundled into the back of the waiting ambulance. There how about that ? reckon I'd be quite a good News Hack :D :D :D |

We could hear it up at ours, it kept Joseph awake tonight as he goes to bed at 5.30, funnily enough when Ian went to the shop he said it didn't sound as loud at the shop down near the park. The sound must have travelled up with the wind.
