Placenta anyone??

I'll eat the placenta, says Cruise
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is planning to eat his new baby's placenta.
It is the latest in a series of unusual revelations by the 43-year-old Mission Impossible star about the child he is expecting with fiancee Katie Holmes.
He told GQ magazine: "I'm gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there.
Cruise has also claimed he knew actress Holmes, 27, was pregnant, even before she told him.

A follower of Scientology, he has defended the religion's belief that women should give birth in silence.

"It's really about respecting the woman.
"It's not about her not screaming," he has told GQ.
Cruise recently also said he believes he can cure drug addicts.
The actor plans to marry Holmes in the summer.
He said earlier this month that their baby was due "any day now

Yes, always makes me laugh when men suggest anything to do with childbirth - until you have a uterus you can't have an opinion - is my view.

Having said that, I wanted to see the placenta - I was also quite keen on the idea of eating it but it was damaged so they wouldn't let me (personally I think they dropped it deliberately to stop me asking for it - haha)!

Yeah it makes me laugh when you hear men saying " why don't you try it with no pain relief this time DARLING".........

Yeah why don't you try shoving a football where the sun don't shine, while singing "I'm forever blowing bubbles"....and no pain relief DARLING!!!:D

Hello, Gayles got her dungarees on, I'll have you know there are some men sensitive to the thought of childbirth without having a uterus!
I'm not one of them! (I'm not bitter but I do think you deserve all the pain you get, you never stop telling us about it!).
I suffered more than she did with afterbirth, (always lumbered with the kids while she went out!).

That's fair - the nine months of hell that we go through is just about equal in pain level to the following 18 years!

Excuse me? where do you get nine months of hell from? up and until the crunch You all claim to be blooming! then on average 12 to 14 hours of hell and yes I agree it is HELL! I think my wife had been practicing and searching the dictionary for the words she used to blame me for the position she was in!

I however while she was on gas and air and anything else she could use to ease the trauma, had to remain by her side taking this abuse, even if you went for a toilet break you could hear the swearing down the corridor and the look of disdain on the midwives faces because you were no longer by her side!

You lot at least had something to ease your suffering and were out of your heads, us men had to face it completley sober and without artificial aids!

I for one think the time has long past where we go back to the good old days of men no where near the labour ward and womens problems are not, never, discussed in front of men and children.

You were willing to assume that position to conceive the child, so stop moaning about taking it up again to give birth to that wonderous bundle of joy!

Re: Placenta anyone??

I was blooming all right, bloomin' sick from start to finish - spent the first three months ill, the next three months uncomfortable and then the last three months in hospital. There was possibly a day somewhere about five months in when I felt good!

And yes, I agree they should keep men out of the way because the last thing you want when you're in the delivery room is someone holding your hand and saying 'breath, breath' like it was something I could forget to do.

If you want to imagine some of the pain that we go through cut a hole in your skin then put both your hands inside the hole and rip it wider apart and that might give you some idea of how much it hurts.

As for drugs - they spend nine months telling you that drugs, coffee, pate are the worst things in the world for your unborn baby, then in the last few hours before it's born they let you pump everything and anything in to it. So not only do you have the pain to contend with but you have the guilt that you're drugging up an innocent child.

But I'll tell you what Less, next time we meet we'll have a nice chat about all this because I have lots to say on this subject!

We suffer a pain far worse day in day out it is the searing pain that cuts through the mind, from nagging, so called liberated women, that inevitably when something goes wrong always utter the term, "men", even if we had nothing whatsoever to do with it.

As for your threat to chat on the subject we are doing that now and only because I hate you ladies trying to be the martyr, you are built for the job I am not, stop complaining, stop blaming us, get on with what you are here for and the world will be a better place.

Less......I think you have learned a very valuable lesson.......though perhaps a little late in life. Always smile and say 'Yes, love...you are right'....it saves a lot of argument and leaves more time for the thing that you men are built for - consuming ale!

Give it to a chef and he can make a meal for all those involved in the birth. If Mr Cruise wants to try something out of the ordinary for some publicity then lets hop the vid of it hits the net. The thought of it wants to make me puke and thats on an empty stomach after reading it in the paper. Wonder what he plans for desert dirty nappies.

Far be it from anyone to criticise religion, IMO people can believe whatever they want to believe however, you knew there was a however coming along, the news this morning reported that due to scientology 'rules' the baby had to be seperated from it's mother and given to a holy man of scientology (for how long I didn't hear), the baby had to remain unwashed for 24hrs after birth and when it is returned to Katie she cannot feed it milk it must be given barley water.

Re: Placenta anyone??

It is highly unusual for placentae to be taken home and eaten. We never offer that service, if you have been asked if you want your placenta, it is to look at it, not devour it.

If someone asks for their placenta to take home then that is fine, but they must sign a legal document which states that it is their responsibility and they must dispose of it in the correct manner. Many cultures choose to bury their placentae as a fertility offering. The legal document will specify where the placenta can be buried eg, away from waterways etc.

Placentae are very nutritious and there are some interesting recipes on the web. Pate is quite easy to make from placentae and probably tastes no different than any other meat pate.

Before the days of HIV and other blood borne viruses, placentae were always saved and sent to drug companies. We had a big freezer for them on the old delivery suite and they were collected regularly. Hormones would be extracted from them and used to make medicines some componenets were allegedly added to cosmetics. One of the old retired (now deceased) midwives once told me that the membranes from placentae were once used as temporary skin grafts during the war.

A placenta is a remarkable organ and well worth a look if you get chance to see them. Many midwives will offer you a look at your placenta at delivery, if you get the opportunity then take a look at it. It is no different from viewing a good piece of liver in a butcher's shop so there's no need to be queasy about it. It is a multi-functional organ which controlls the baby's respiration, nutrition, hormones, growth, protection from some infections and drugs. It is the only organ which can comfortably perform all of these functions and more. To the trained eye every placenta looks slightly different......:D

Ace! Why didn't I think of following (?) scientology when mine were born. I wonder if the holy man will keep them until the baby is sleeping through the night? ..... ;) Or better still ....... til they're 18! :D

lol! Seriously Lettie they offered me mine to devour with my first born, yes it was probably only in jest, the 2 midwives went through all sorts of recipe ideas I could make with it, it was quite a chuckle really. I also did see my placenta and can't say I found myself overly squeamish, it was more fascinating than anything.
