Sterotypes and generalisations

I believe racism is based largely on ignorance and formed through steroetypng and generalisations. What we don't know scares us, what scares us makes us defensive, defence turns into attack - get my drift?
Anyway, upon personal request from a fellow Accy-webber who knows who she is....( ;D), I thought I'd start a new topic. The topic I've chosen is stereotypes and generalisations.
OK I'll start with a few I've heard - partly on this forum - would be glad to hear if people agree / disagree etc. and why.

Here goes:

Germans are loadmouthed, ill-mannered and arrogant.   :-X
Southeners are cold and unfriendly   >:(
Older people are not open to change   :o
The British are conservative  ::)
Italians are always with the side that's winning  ;)
People with GCSEs consider themselves better than those with no qualifications  ???

OK guys, get your teeth into those and get some more piling in  :) :)

Jo.

Jo,
I don't particularly like homo's, euro's, lesbo's, fatso's, vegatarians, vegans, frogs, wops, spivs, commy's, anarchists, pinko's of any shade, so called asylum seekers, Richard Branson, scroungers, pimps, tarts, drug dealers, burglars, animal rights lovers, hunt sabateurrs, soft southern puffters, Man U fans, Scouse scallywags, tykes and riff-raff in general. However, I'm liberal minded and always prepared to make an exception.

Re: Sterotypes and generalisations

Met loads of nice southerners, and Germans. Some of the richest people in the world are self made and don't have qualifications. I read somewhere that Richard Branson didn't do GCE's. People do generalise because that's human nature, and we have probably all done it. Before anybody denies this, ask yourselves this question.

Have you ever told or laughed at an Irish, Scouse, Indian, Chinese, Mother - in - law, Blonde etc, joke????

That is stereotyping and generalisation at its best and some of the best jokes in the world and the greatest entertainers would not exist if it were not for the human need to stereotype. ;D  ;D  ;D

Re: Sterotypes and generalisations

Very thought provoking that one.

I would say that it depends as to the context that they where said and meant. Any comment meant to attack someone is wrong.

A question though is it that we need to watch what we say or is it that we have to not take personal comments by others?

Or is it a mixture of both we should watch what we say but ignore unfounded comments by others?

Generalised comments tend to be unfounded as nobody is the same we are unique.

Hi Mo

A Tyke is someone from Yorkshire (slang). A spiv is a dodgy dealer in things.

Hey Tealeaf!! I'm back from my siesta, it lasted all evening, alml night and all mornign!! You know these Italians, always asleep, never get any work done - not that I'm generalising of course..........

I haver to say that as far as Germans are concerned, I had the following experience:
I went to live there for a year and went open-nminded. I came back though instead with a stereotypred image based on experience. Of course you can't generalise too much, but each culture does have certain traits that are in-bred across the whole country. This, I guess, comes about because we watch the same TV programmes, here the same jokes etc etc. I would NEVER live in Germany again, though I have many German friends that are lovely.

What is the current sitation within Britain (and especially Accy) itself? Britain is a multicultural society with a large number of Asian immigrants and British-born people of Asian origin. Also, is it true that a lot of East-European asylum seekers are entering Britain? Are there any in Accy? What are the feelings about this?

Re: Sterotypes and generalisations

;D  We had a lot of Eastern European Asylum seekers in Blackburn a couple of years ago. Many of whom were pregnant at the time. So we had a lot of them coming to have their babies at Queens Park. Most of them spoke no English and we managed to ferret around the community and find translators, many were frightened and had nothing more than the clothes on their backs. These people were obviously in genuine need, had no relatives here and were desperate to hear news from home, and return there when it was safe to do so. They were also very grateful for the services provided to them :'(

Re: Sterotypes and generalisations

It's really sad about the asylum seekers, Lettie. Here in Italy I think we get the largest number as we're so near to Albania and ex- Yugoslavia. On the news, when there's a crime they often refer to "an Albanian man was arrested for.....", but if they're talking about an Italian, they don't refer to his origins. There is SO much racism against these people in Italy, it's terrible, and yet they really are in need. What gets my back up are those people that were pro war in Iraq to help "free the poor Iraqis", yet they wouldn't give a penny to help the asylum seekers in their own country, on the contrary, they treat them so badly it makes me sick.

Mik - I wasn't referring to you - would never allow myself to speak of you as a German!! 'Specially not with that on-line Lancashire accent you've got, mate!!
