We Shouldn't have survived
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids
in the 50's, 60's,70's, and the early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because..... Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead based paint, which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans. When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'clackers' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle - tasted the same. We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then we went top speed down the hill, only to find out we had forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. no one was able to reach us all day and no one minded. We did not have Playstations or X-Boxes, no Video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played elastic twist and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and therewere no law suits. They were accidents. We learnt not to do the same thing again. We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue - we learned to get over it. We walked to friends homes. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and although we were told it would happen, we did not have very many eyes out, nor did the 'live stuff' live in us forever. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of, they actually sided with the law. Imagine that! This generation has produced some of the best risk takers and problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. we had freedom, failure, success and responsibility. and we learned how to deal with it all. And you are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!! (If you aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us) |
Re: We Shouldn't have survived
Just scraped in there by the skin of your teeth Chris, age wise!
Wouldn't you say that a lot of illnesses and allergies today are as a result of us trying to be such a squeaky clean society? When I think of some of the stuff we did as kids it makes you wonder. User point for your youthful wiseness! |

Re: We Shouldn't have survived
"I remember when....." section does sound like a good idea. Let me look into reorganising the forums and seeing where it can fit in.

Re: We Shouldn't have survived
Can't tar everyone with the same brush though Tommey!
It is always a minority (although it may not seem that way) who cause the problems. Don't forget that todays "yobs" are a product of a previous generation of parents. Today's society hasn't materialised overnight. I have six children between 13 and 31 who class themselves as normal, decent human beings, and hate it when people make stock judgements about themselves and their peers. Maybe the powers that be, instead of putting so much effort into sending hooligans on foriegn holidays etc, should start doing some research into where society started to go wrong, with a view to putting things right. Otherwise I imagine the problem is only going to escalate in the future. |

I still pop tar bubbles, the street off Blackburn Rd (opposite Myrtle House) has loads of them in summer. When me and my colleague have finished doing the clinic at Myrtle on Monday afternoons we go up there to our cars popping tar bubbles on the way. Look out for us!!! [smiley=4u.gif] |
Re: We Shouldn't have survived

Re: We Shouldn't have survived
we are a lot harder and more inventive, becaause we had to occupy ourselves. No computers, PS2's and the likes then.We were forced to use our minds and well as you can see.We did pretty well i think.Nowadays its all handed down on a plate.

Re: We Shouldn't have survived
It's all swings and roundabouts. I dont think at the end of the day kids on the whole are no better and no worse than we were. Just different. Different times, different things, different ways.
You can't tar all kids with the same brush and the kids of today, have more than we could ever dream about. |
