Giving up smoking!!!!
NOT as easy as it looks lol.
I got up on saturday morning and had my usual morning cig. Afterwards I thought " no that's it I'm giving up" and off to work I went with no ciggies. Went all day without one, and it didn't really bother me as much as I thought it would. Next day got up and was gasping, BUT off I went to work no ciggies. Came home at 2pm and was dying for one. Could feel the stress and was very irritable. Went out on sunday night with mate from work and bought myself 10 ( because I just knew I couldn't drink without the odd one)...........did really well and still had some next day left over. Now kids still think I have given up, so I can't light up in front of them, plus I won't be smoking at work. So all in all I will be right down to about 3 a day. Today I got up and had a cig when kids went to school. Had another crafty one just before they came home, and just had one now which will be the last one for tonight! 3 a day aint bad to say I used to smoke about 15 a day. And I'm just hoping that even the 3 a day craving will pass soon. |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
i tried that last week slinks, i wore a patch for a day then it got ripped off whilst i was doing something, so i didnt bother after that lol
|
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Well done!keep it up.....
Karma on its way girl! I have never smoked so don't know how hard it must be but can imagine as i have cravings-just for a different thing :o |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Nice one chick :)
It will be easier when the smoking in public places ban comes in, you won't feel the urge as much when your out having a beer. Feeling irritable though are we now!! Well stay away from me your a moody ..... (you know but I cant star it ;) ) at the best of times!!! :D |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Keep it up Slinky. Kids thought i'd given up for years until two years ago my son caught me in duty free buying some, and i thought what the hell. But i must admit my ciggie intake instantly went up when they knew.

Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Well sometimes the cravings are really bad. But I will wait til the kids have gone to bed, then sneak a ciggie. But if I can't let them see me smoking, then I can't smoke easily cos I always have a ankle biter round my leg at some point during the day. Plus not smoking at work...........like I said Hopefully even the 3 a day will get easier to live without.
Thanks for all you comments. It does make a difference when you hear supportive people. |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Well done for trying, keep it up.
Have you thought of contacting Accrington Hospital, they have groups to help you stop smoking. They give you free patches and gum, we know a couple of people who have given up with their help |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Good luck chuck, however it seems like most successful quiters are the all or nothing brigade, 3 a day is till smoking :D
|
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
As you know I smoke, but I wish you lots of luck.
Cutting down to three is a great start. Stick at it, you can do it. Plus just think how smug you'll be at the meets come the summer, as you watch all the addicts keep nipping out for a ciggie. How you'll laugh. Keep with it hun. x |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
well done slinks, tried to give you karma but need to spread it a bit first :)

Good Luck Slinks. I hope you succeed in your quest. I got down to between 3 & 5 a day but now i'm back to normal.
it's the stress of living with a mod that did it. |

Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Keep at it Slinks, i once did 14month and failed,n you aint as dumb as cashy.;)
|
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
keep it up, and soon you will realise why you gave up in the first place, your taste buds will come back, your house will smell better and your hair wont stink either, since I gave up I dont get the light patches behind me pictures anymore and when i get a cold I dont cough and splutter like I did before!, it takes 10 years to get out of your system, thats probably why its so hard, but keep going,.......you'll be glad you did....trust me!! :D best thing I ever done, oh and you will save a fortune, I remember with my spare cash, I put it away and ended buying me self a shed!!

Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
I went to a hypnotist to stop smoking years ago and it worked for me. I t takes a while before you stop thinking about cigarettes but its well worth it healthwise to say I am a non smoker when the craving stops
|
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
How does the hypnotism work? Do you still get cravings after the hypnotism?

My Dad had hypnosis, and acupuncture trying to kick the weed. Both of those things didn't work for him. He only managed to stop when he retired at fifty, by will power alone. Sadly he died the year after stopping...of lung cancer, but don't let that put you off, see it more as encouragement. The facts being the earlier you can stop, the greater the health benefits. |

Oh Rind :( That happens all to often. It's happened in my family too. It makes you sit up and think if you've actually been smoking for the majority of your life is it actually wise to give up or is that the trigger for the dormant cancerous cells to come alive? |

Sadly the last year of my Dad's life he really struggled to keep off the fags, he was grumpy, and he found it hard work, but he did it. Just after Christmas he finally started to feel better, and felt he had cracked it. He had two months were he was happy, and more like himself, and did all the things he liked again, like messing about on boats. A month after that he had a bad back, and went to the doctors, and they found he had a terminal cancer, which had spread from his lungs. A week later he died at home, with us all on the bed with him, aged fifty one. I've not posted this to frighten anyone. My Dad was just unlucky. I'm so proud that he managed to stop smoking, and he maybe could have gone on to live for years if he managed to stop earlier. He made me and my brother promise to stop smoking. He was a realist though, and didn't tell us to stop straight away, but in our own time. Thirteen years later we both still smoke.:( |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Mine neither will be a morbid scaremongering post. That's very similar to what happened to my Nan. My nans had spread from her lungs to her brain when they found it.
I think the moral of the stories is not to start smoking in the first place. :) |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
My daughter is half way through week three. I'm well impressed with her even though we don't have our normal marathon phone calls now. I daren't light up in case she hears me and she can't stay still long enough.
I'm well proud of her and hope she keeps it up. I think I've mentioned this before, but never mind. After giving up for almost two years, I started sneaky smoking. I'd stand outside my house whilst 'im indoors was snoring, then park up on my way to work for a quick roll up. The best ciggies I've ever had.......it was so exciting! Now I'm back to twenty a day. They are so cheap here it's hard to even think of giving up. No incentive. Well done to everyone who can crack it! |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
I watched dad die from lung cancer. Dad had smoked all his life since he was about 9 or 10. Its 21 years this month since he died. My eldest sis tried smoking when she was in school hated it and hasnt smoked since. My other sis smoked gave up and started again, pregnant gave up and no one was allowed to smoke in her house. then she'd have the odd one and give me stick for smoking etc. Then she started again and carried on. At the minute shes given up again - how long for i dont know. Bro has always had the odd cigar and nick my fags etc.
Good luck slinks. Sis has always said though that its easier to give up full stop compared to cutting down. |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
I watched my Dad die from Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema. He really suffered, but it didn't deter him from smoking.
When I cut down I felt worse and started to put weight back on. Then when Mum died I started smoking again. I have thought of hypnotism but it's sooo costly. I'm dead proud of MUMMIBOO she managed to give up with just sheer will power. |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
My brother started smoking when he was about ten and smoked full time until about fifteen years ago.
He is now at the stage that he only smokes when he goes to the Stop on Friday nights. He has a couple with his pint or three and then puts them away again until the next week. I really admire that. |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
As any smoker will know! No-ONE can scare you into NOT smoking by telling you all the things that can happen. It just doesn't work like that.
And it doesn't work for me. Like Tinks said, our Nan died of lung cancer and she had given up smoking. Very sad. My dad died at 44 years old from Sarcoidosis ( which is a very rare lung disease) that attacks the lungs. And if you can imagine a block of cheese on a cartoon with all the holes in it, this is what your lungs end up looking like. BUT he never smoked a fag in his life..........he hated my mum smoking!!! So I just can't be scared into giving up because of health reasons, because I think what will be will be. I know it's sad, but, when one of those horrible adverts come on the T.V to remind us that it's a health worry...................it actually just reminds me that I haven't had a fag for a while and That I need one. No one wants to get cancer, and I know they say smoking increases your chances of getting it BUT the environment is just as bad!! and I can't stop living in that. My mum's grandad also died of emphysimia and he didn't smoke............... |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
how ya doin with it slinks?
|
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Good for you slinks for at least cutting back. That's a really big step!:D As your suystem gets used to a little bit less nicotine, it should help with the cravings!
I've got a friend over here trying to quit. She was all excited that she was done to 1 1/2 packs a day. I hadn't realized that she had been smoking 2 1/2 packs a day. But even that is a start. I wish you well. Brian Hey, how bout chewing tobacco like I do during the spring and fall. That'll get ya quitting real fast! |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
Good luck to you Slinky anyone alse trying to kick the habit. It's something I've never done so never had to try quitting but I've seen other people struggle so I know it can't be easy.
I did a health course where they explained about how the addiction works and why people get cravings and it's hard to quit. The opinion seemed to be that every time you have a ciggie it reminds your brain what it's craving and sort of keeps the desire topped up. They did say that it takes a long time for that to go away, especially for people who have smoked a lot. I was amazed at some of the ingredients of cigarettes too - rocket fuel???! My Dad was a smoker but he just quit one day - threw all his fags away and that was it - and he had a lot in the cupboard that had been brought back off holiday. I don't know what inspired him to quit, he never said, and he never started again. It must have been quite an acheivement although I didn't realise it at the time. I also never realised how stinky cigarettes were because I'd been so used to lving with the smell but once he'd stopped and the house became clean I found that I noticed how the smell stuck to my hair and clothes if I went into the homes of friends whose parents smoked. I really admire people who can cut down and/or eventually stop. It must take a heck of a lot of doing. Good luck :) |
Re: Giving up smoking!!!!
I gave up 2 years ago now i woke up one morning and thought "i wonder how long i can not have a fag for" i went all morning and i really wanted one by the end of the day i thought im not giving in now if i have one now i might well have just had one first thing this morning and not gone through all that and ive not have one since.
