The Limp Handshake.
I try not to be guided by first impressions of people, however, why am I always put off by gentlemen who have a weak/limp handshake ? Ok, don't want my knuckles crushing, but just makes me shudder when I am offered one of these, and the memory of this first greeting always stays with me ..
Some men would tickle the palm or your hand when they did this, and seemingly had 'rude' implications. Uuumph, hadn't had one of those for a bit..LOL. Was always embarrassed by the Europeon way of kissing on both cheeks, but as we travel abroad more .. getting more used to it. Do give my friends a hug if not seen for a while, but mainly it's 'Hi, how are you' (hoping they are not going to tell you if they are suffering with an ulcer or summat). Why do we always finish with 'See ya' later' (some with American type accent) knowing full well you may not see them for about another 6 months. Au revoir is lovely, isn't it, if it weren't French. :D |

Thing is Roy, with the continental kissing, never know which side to start at first and whether three times or two ? Always finish up bashing noses. Is their some set 'choreography' to this ? |

I too hate the limp handshake and have made a point of trying to develop a really strong one. Funny, though, you find that sometimes the weakest handshakes are from the most surprising people. I think that sometimes there is a little bit of sexism in it - in that some blokes don't think women should be in business so they don't want to shake their hands, yet you see them shaking other blokes hands much more strongly. The other side of this is the crushing handshake, when you feel like you need a trip to casualty for an x-ray afterwards. Or, the long handshake when they won't let go! |

But don't you put your left cheek to their left cheek? If you put your left cheek to their right cheek you'd be doing the tango. :)

Re: The Limp Handshake.
Telly ya' what .. think G.C's idea of a lovely smile and hello is best for us British, and avoid the limp handshake .. makes you think what else is limp >>>> can't believe I said that

Re: The Limp Handshake.
limp handshakes always make me wary of whoever, as for the kissing on both cheeks greeting, dont bother me, got used to it when i lived abroad.at first i thought it strange, but soon got used to it, suppose its just differant cultures n as i was living there only correct to adopt.;)

Noticed this from a link on another thread if you have 10 minutes to read through it:-

Re: The Limp Handshake.
When I went to the last meet Gary greeted me with a straightforward direct lips to lips greeting (a friendly peck). I was a little surprised but not offended -a bit flattered really that he showed such open affection for someone old enough to be his mum (and we have only met once before)
I suppose this is the way they do things 'daan souff' ;) I recall that 40 years ago men who wore carpet slippers got labelled as 'softies' by men up here. I dont think I would like a stranger to greet me with a kiss, not even a cheek peck - perhaps it's just me being old fashioned |

Can't say am embarassed at all with the two (or three) kisses thing except if you bump noses or foreheads. Think a little familiar on a first meeting with a complete stranger, but not the second time, especially if male ... :D |
