toys...

do you think that toys should be seperated into boys toys and girls toys? at nursery children are allowed to play with whatever they want but do you think it is ok( or not) for boys to play with dolls and prams?

Lilly 28-12-2007 20:46

Re: toys...

Yes, I think it's fine for boys to play with dolls and prams or for girls to play with power rangers and cars.

Toys should not be segregated at home or at nursery.

good, not just me then!

Re: toys...

I agree, toys are toys as far as children are concerned, and are not likely to encourage a boy to be effeminate for example, my kids play with whatever toys they want to play with, they also play school and family games where the 'daddy' isn't necessarily one of the boys, it is all harmless fun.

Re: toys...

I dont think toys should be separated, children should be able to play with any toy and use their imagination, I was never allowed a train set because it was a boys toy, when my sons old enough guess what he's getting!

They should not be seperated in my opinion.......does it mean people who believe they should, also think adult men should not push prams and adult women should not drive cars?
Jack has a doll's pushchair and 2 dolls.....i dont care what anyone thinks.

Kids will play with whatever is to hand. If infant boys play with dolls, prams or toy kitchens, then fine, its just play. I would have to say that I would not actually purchase the said items for a male child. Were you actually asking if we would purchase such things for a male ema ?

Who disagreed with you buying them for your son?

I'm happy for Siobhan to play with anything from cars/bikes to dolls and prams. I will encourage her to play with anything and everything. We have woods at teh top of our street and I can't wait till I can put a rope swing up!

if she likes it fine, if not thats also fine. but she will be encouarged to try everything

I just wanted clarification for the subsequent posters. Perhaps those who have already posted might give their views as to whether they would actually purchase the items mentioned for a male child.

Re: toys...

I'll buy Siobhan scalextrix/cars/whatever. IF that is what she says she wants

derekgas 28-12-2007 21:42

Re: toys...

If my lads wanted toys I considered girly, or my girls decided they wanted a boy toy, I think I would probably make sure they wanted the item instead of something aimed at thier own gender, but if they wanted that item, they would have it. (I would probably batter my eldest son if he asked for a barbie, he is 26 lol)

If he wanted it yes

I have no hang ups, the question is do you? You seem to be questioning me as if you expect me to say no way.

whats "action Man " if not a male dolly. same with star wars characters etc that we had as kids

Nahhh, Im not quizzing you, perhaps Im quizzing myself. I have or at least thought I had no hang up, no "ism's", just cant picture myself buying a doll ( not an action figure ) a pram or toy kitchen sort stuff for a male child. I would feel uncomfortable

wonder if thats because your parents didnt let you play with them and told you they were girlie toys and accused you of being gay?

My little boy plays with dolls, prams, houses, kitchens, bratz and whatever else he can lay his sticky hands on. He got a lovely dolls house with a nice pink roof for christmas that he loves and often takes one of his dolls shopping with us, but he also loves his boys toys just as much :D

I think that amongst the older male generation there was the notion, fed to them by their parents, when they were growing up that playing with dolls, prams, and other 'girls' toys would make them into a sissy.

Likewise a girl who played with garages and cars would grow up to be butch and manly.

Of course, we know now that this is not so but in my opinion this is what was thought 50 or so years ago.

but theres nowt wrong with playing with girlie stuff, my daughter always played with cars when she was younger, never wanted dolls, now she into rock and black stuff...emmm....lol...a right emo, well thats what i call her:D

Re: toys...

My brother is 3 and has 'girly' toys, but its not having them that bothers me, i just hate it when he insists on taking the barbie doll or the baby out with him because alot of people think he will end up being gay  I think its a silly idea personally but you cant change peoples ways, and if thats what they think then thats that.
