I'd do anything
Is anyone watching this on Saturday nights? Well, the main show is on Saturdays, the results are on Sundays. I think the right one went home tonight. She looked like Gillian McKeith!
It's the show hosted by Graham Norton to find a Nancy and an Oliver for Cameron Mackintosh's new production of 'Oliver'. I'm watching it. I love these shows. I watched the Maria one and the Joseph one and really enjoyed them. I actually went to London to see Connie Fisher in 'The Sound of Music.' She was brilliant. :) |
Re: I'd do anything
I think a few of them need to go back to 'Nancy school', and that's just the presenters and judges.:D
Personally I hope 'lost a lot of weight Blackpool Nancy' wins. |
Re: I'd do anything
I dont watch the show, but I saw a funny clip on Harry hills T.V burps about it!! :D:D:D

I haven't seen it but did watch the Joseph one and loved it. Would love to go and see the show.

Re: I'd do anything
My Nancy brought the house down when we did Oliver, in my school's production in 1979.
Ok, there were no girls at QEG's then, but I didn't just get the part because I was priddy. I brought a vibrant, vunerabilty out in the gin swiggin' old slapper. |

Re: I'd do anything
With the Joseph and Maria programmes at least people were choosing the star of the production. This programme only lets us vote for the new Nancy so its less appealing. Its like having another series of "Any Dream Will Do" where you vote for the role of Pharoh.

Re: I'd do anything
There are plans for a new West End production of Funny Girl, starring Connie Fisher, which is probably why they aren't doing an audition programme called 'Looking for Fanny'.

Re: I'd do anything
Watched this tonight ... hmmmm .. well, maybe can't judge not having watched the others. Just one for me at the moment, and that is Sarah. They seemed to have praised Jessica who could not hit that first low not from 'Somewhere'. Just love Niamh .. probably not in the role of Nancy ...wow.. but that red dress .. would vote for that. And how could they possibly even consider that a black person could play Nancy or Oliver !! Charles Dickens would turn over in his grave !!. Please don't come up with Othello.
|
Re: I'd do anything
I like Jessie and Rachel. Either of them could play Nancy for me.
I'm not keen on Tara or Keisha. I'm wondering why they are having the winning girl play Nancy for 8 shows a week. They tried that with Connie Fisher in The Sound of Music but it was too much, she got ill and they had to cut her down to 6 shows a week and get someone else to do the other two. You'd have thought that the people in charge would have learnt from this. |
Re: I'd do anything
I thought little Sarah's 'Maybe This Time' was brilliant, and Samantha's 'Somewhere was spine chilling'.
I can't see the appeal with Jess, nor agree with all the praise that is heaped upon her. To me, the way she sings out of the side of her mouth, makes it look like she has had a stroke. Not Nancy for me I'm afraid. Still love Blackpool Nancy though. |

I forgot to mention Blackpool Nancy. I like her too. She reminds me of Shelley from Corrie. :) Speaking of mouths, I wouldn't like Francesca to be Nancy, she looks like Mr Ed. Oooh we're bitchy tonight, aren't we? :D |

I like Niamh too. Fragile, but showing some inner strength, and a great voice. |

According to this site, by the end of the 1860's there was a black population in London of between 5-10,000 people, most of whom I suspect because of economics were living in the east end, rather than the more rarefied west of London. Black Communities of Eighteenth-Century London Nancy, you could be black....except the last black girl left isn't very good.:D |
Re: I'd do anything
I think the show is quite good, the red curly girl is my favourite but I can't remember her name, quite like Niamh too, but she disappointed me tonight :( wanted a bit more oomph.

This is how Dickens described her and Rose, didn't say what type of colour her face was, but sure he did not mean black:- "They wore a good deal of hair, not very neatly turned up behind, and were rather untidy about the shoes and stockings. They were not exactly pretty, perhaps; but they had a great deal of colour in their faces, and looked quite stout and healthy. Being remarkably free and easy with their manners, Oliver thought them to be very nice girls indeed. Which there is no doubt they were. 'she was not the first choice for Nancy. Director Sir Carol Reed had wanted Shirley Bassey for the role, but Hollywood studio bosses felt the world – and particularly the still racially divided American South – was not ready for a black Nancy.'
I'd do anything to be a judge on I'd Do Anything ... but all they offered me was a one-minute slot, says the original Nancy | the Daily Mail Looks like Shani Wallis was lucky to get the film role. I know you're just expressing an aesthetic opinion Kate, but it wouldn't bother me if Nancy was black, as long as she was good enough for the role. There would have been plenty of black, gin swingin', tarts with hearts in the east end in Victorian London. A black Oliver is a different matter, as he is related to other members of the cast, and brings in different issues, unless they too are black. |

Any real lady of fashion would have wanted a complexion that looked like she'd never stepped out from under a parasol, thus showing she didn't have the appearance of a woman who actually had to work for a living. It wasn't until the 1920's, when Coco Channel accidentally got sun burned in Biarritz, that having any colour on your face became socially acceptable, and fashionable. |

That article was very interesting about Shani Wallis. Couldn't see Shirley Bassey in this role at all .. no sequined dresses and certainly could not see her portraying the underlying vulnerablity that Nancy had, or subservience to Bill Sikes LOL. She certainly has the common touch though. |
Re: I'd do anything
I saw a production of Oliver in Manchester a few years ago, and both Nancy and Fagin were black. I cant remember the name of the woman that played Nancy. She was on earlier in the series though when they were at "Nancy School" and Gary Wilmot played Fagin. They were both fantastic and it didnt really cross my mind whilst watching it. I do agree about Oliver being black as that would be a continuity error as Garinda said, you see members of his family.
I dont think it matters in musicals about colour unless the role calls for it. I've seen Gary Wilmot again in Me & My Girl, and I was in a production of Me & My Girl where Bill was played by a black actor. When I was in it I didnt even think about it and nobody has ever mentioned it. |

Re: I'd do anything
Never mind Eurovision, this is the highlight of my Saturday night.
It was the semi-final this week, the final is next week.:mosher: Is anyone else on here still watching? Only 4 left now.....Rachel, Samantha, Jessie and Jodie. I want Rachel or Samantha to win. :D |
Re: I'd do anything
Yeah i'm watching it. I want Jodie to win though. :D

Jessie is my Nancy................she is the one with the curly hair isn't she?

Re: I'd do anything
Damn.
Samantha has gone out of the competition.:( That leaves Jodie and Jessie. I've not thought that Jessie was right for the part so far but I will say this....her performance with Gwion (who will be playing Oliver) was the best of the three tonight. The other two girls didn't connect with the children in the way that Jessie did with Gwion. Maybe it's because Jessie has younger brothers and sisters and is used to interacting with children. |
Re: I'd do anything
The nation's Nancy is....... Blackpool's own Jodie Prenger aged 28 ( and I'm Dolly Parton, she's 35 at least surely. :p)
Seriously, I'm sure she'll do a wonderful job. She's certainly been consistent. Well done Jodie. :D |
Re: I'd do anything
YAY!!!!!:D:D:D Me & my Mum literally jumped off the sofa cheering!!!
Theres no way Jessie could have done it, you could tell she was struggling tonight, 8 shows a week... i dont think so!! Jodie didnt seem to struggle at all tonight, even when she sung at the very end and was so emotional she kept it together. I'm going to try and get tickets to go and see it!! |
Re: I'd do anything
Great result.:)
As you say Lily, Jessie upped her game tonight, and performed really well. Happily it's the people who decide, and the people want Jodie as Nancy.:) |

Bloomin' hell, just found this.

Re: I'd do anything
Who do you think should be Accywebs Nancy::confused:
|
Re: I'd do anything
She must have some determination to lose all that weight. I think I read that she'd lost about 8 stone. That takes some willpower.
She does seem to have put a little bit back on though and this morning's paper said that Cameron thinks she's too big to play Nancy. I think that this is utter rubbish. She was too big before but she's not now. Still, the show doesn't open for another 6 months, I bet she'll lose even more weight by then with all the working and dancing she'll be doing. On opening night she'll be gorgeous and should be so pleased with herself. :) |

GOOD ON YA JODIE... (I did vote a fair few times before I went out :)) |

Re: I'd do anything
Blimey, I don't think I will be going to see Oliver now. :(
I've just looked at the prices. I looked at Feb 09 half term week. I was looking for 4 tickets for me, hubby and 2 kids. My little girl is only 4 so there's no point in taking her and getting the seats at the top of the balcony.....she wouldn't be able to see. I looked at tickets inn the lower circle.....they're £75. No discounts either....£75 each for me and hubby, £75 each for kids. That's £300 before we leave the house then we'd have to pay for travel, food and a night's accommodation. |
