I'd do anything

Is anyone watching this on Saturday nights? Well, the main show is on Saturdays, the results are on Sundays. I think the right one went home tonight. She looked like Gillian McKeith!

It's the show hosted by Graham Norton to find a Nancy and an Oliver for Cameron Mackintosh's new production of 'Oliver'.

I'm watching it. I love these shows. I watched the Maria one and the Joseph one and really enjoyed them. I actually went to London to see Connie Fisher in 'The Sound of Music.' She was brilliant. :)

I think a few of them need to go back to 'Nancy school', and that's just the presenters and judges.:D

Personally I hope 'lost a lot of weight Blackpool Nancy' wins.

My Nancy brought the house down when we did Oliver, in my school's production in 1979.

Ok, there were no girls at QEG's then, but I didn't just get the part because I was priddy. I brought a vibrant, vunerabilty out in the gin swiggin' old slapper.

With the Joseph and Maria programmes at least people were choosing the star of the production. This programme only lets us vote for the new Nancy so its less appealing. Its like having another series of "Any Dream Will Do" where you vote for the role of Pharoh.

There are plans for a new West End production of Funny Girl, starring Connie Fisher, which is probably why they aren't doing an audition programme called 'Looking for Fanny'.

Watched this tonight ... hmmmm .. well, maybe can't judge not having watched the others. Just one for me at the moment, and that is Sarah. They seemed to have praised Jessica who could not hit that first low not from 'Somewhere'. Just love Niamh .. probably not in the role of Nancy ...wow.. but that red dress .. would vote for that. And how could they possibly even consider that a black person could play Nancy or Oliver !! Charles Dickens would turn over in his grave !!. Please don't come up with Othello.

Re: I'd do anything

I like Jessie and Rachel. Either of them could play Nancy for me.

I'm not keen on Tara or Keisha.

I'm wondering why they are having the winning girl play Nancy for 8 shows a week. They tried that with Connie Fisher in The Sound of Music but it was too much, she got ill and they had to cut her down to 6 shows a week and get someone else to do the other two.

You'd have thought that the people in charge would have learnt from this.

Re: I'd do anything

I thought little Sarah's 'Maybe This Time' was brilliant, and Samantha's 'Somewhere was spine chilling'.

I can't see the appeal with Jess, nor agree with all the praise that is heaped upon her. To me, the way she sings out of the side of her mouth, makes it look like she has had a stroke. Not Nancy for me I'm afraid.

Still love Blackpool Nancy though.

I forgot to mention Blackpool Nancy. I like her too. She reminds me of Shelley from Corrie. :)

I quite agree. No mention is made as to Nancy's ethnicity in Dicken's book, and the east end of London, being one of the busiest ports in the world, was a real melting pot of people from all over the world.

According to this site, by the end of the 1860's there was a black population in London of between 5-10,000 people, most of whom I suspect because of economics were living in the east end, rather than the more rarefied west of London.

I know all this Garinda, thought someone of intellectual ability may come back and argue the point. Just would not be the same for me, that's all .. Oliver is one of my favourite musicals and would be distracted from what I consider a mis-casting.

This is how Dickens described her and Rose, didn't say what type of colour her face was, but sure he did not mean black:-

"They wore a good deal of hair, not very neatly turned up behind, and were rather untidy about the shoes and stockings. They were not exactly pretty, perhaps; but they had a great deal of colour in their faces, and looked quite stout and healthy. Being remarkably free and easy with their manners, Oliver thought them to be very nice girls indeed. Which there is no doubt they were. [Oliver Twist, p.62]"

Steeljack: Don't think out of the question at all that Jesus could be portrayed by a dark skinned, hook-nosed jew .. that's what he was.

Can black people not have colour in their faces? Surely they're faces go red too when they blush, cold etc...

Of course Blazey, but pretty sure Dickens did not mean this ... rosy and ruddy complexions was considered a sign of health then. He describes people of black origin as brown usually. Pretty sure if he saw Nancy as black, there would have been no doubt in his description of her.

Just my preference the way I see Nancy, that's all. Think would be taking stage licence a little too far. Just like I would not wish a tall blond Aryan playing Fagin... :D

My mum and I said a similar thing tonight. I said Oliver should have blonde hair and blue eyes in my opinion, but I can't say it or I'll probably be branded a nazi. I can't say I have read Oliver because I don't actually think much of the story.

Re: I'd do anything

'she was not the first choice for Nancy. Director Sir Carol Reed had wanted Shirley Bassey for the role, but Hollywood studio bosses felt the world – and particularly the still racially divided American South – was not ready for a black Nancy.'

I'd do anything to be a judge on I'd Do Anything ... but all they offered me was a one-minute slot, says the original Nancy | the Daily Mail

Looks like Shani Wallis was lucky to get the film role.

I know you're just expressing an aesthetic opinion Kate, but it wouldn't bother me if Nancy was black, as long as she was good enough for the role. There would have been plenty of black, gin swingin', tarts with hearts in the east end in Victorian London.

A black Oliver is a different matter, as he is related to other members of the cast, and brings in different issues, unless they too are black.

Not pickin' on you, honest hun, but I have to disagree with you on this one too, but 'having a great deal of colour in their faces' wouldn't have been seen as being healthy. For one thing they wouldn't have been healthy, living in the insanitary cess pit of London's slums. It more likey meant they liked more than the odd tipple.

Any real lady of fashion would have wanted a complexion that looked like she'd never stepped out from under a parasol, thus showing she didn't have the appearance of a woman who actually had to work for a living.

It wasn't until the 1920's, when Coco Channel accidentally got sun burned in Biarritz, that having any colour on your face became socially acceptable, and fashionable.

Agree you are correct about the fad that was around then amongst the higher classes and pale complexions .. but appears Dickens thought differently about the look of health, or he would not have offered his description of them in this way. 'stout and healthy' .. love it .. :D

That article was very interesting about Shani Wallis. Couldn't see Shirley Bassey in this role at all .. no sequined dresses and certainly could not see her portraying the underlying vulnerablity that Nancy had, or subservience to Bill Sikes LOL. She certainly has the common touch though.

I saw a production of Oliver in Manchester a few years ago, and both Nancy and Fagin were black. I cant remember the name of the woman that played Nancy. She was on earlier in the series though when they were at "Nancy School" and Gary Wilmot played Fagin. They were both fantastic and it didnt really cross my mind whilst watching it. I do agree about Oliver being black as that would be a continuity error as Garinda said, you see members of his family.

I dont think it matters in musicals about colour unless the role calls for it. I've seen Gary Wilmot again in Me & My Girl, and I was in a production of Me & My Girl where Bill was played by a black actor. When I was in it I didnt even think about it and nobody has ever mentioned it.

Of course, and it involves several international phone calls to discuss the programme, which luckily I don't pay for.

My top two are Jodie, and Samantha. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic, to quote Miss Nancy Barryman.

Can't see Jessie at all in this part ... would now go for Rachel .. the only one who knows how to take a note into her head, which smacks of good training in order to last the course of a West End production .. the other's vocal chords would pack up within 2 weeks.

Damn.

Samantha has gone out of the competition.:(

That leaves Jodie and Jessie.

I've not thought that Jessie was right for the part so far but I will say this....her performance with Gwion (who will be playing Oliver) was the best of the three tonight.

The other two girls didn't connect with the children in the way that Jessie did with Gwion. Maybe it's because Jessie has younger brothers and sisters and is used to interacting with children.

She must have some determination to lose all that weight. I think I read that she'd lost about 8 stone. That takes some willpower.

She does seem to have put a little bit back on though and this morning's paper said that Cameron thinks she's too big to play Nancy. I think that this is utter rubbish. She was too big before but she's not now.

Still, the show doesn't open for another 6 months, I bet she'll lose even more weight by then with all the working and dancing she'll be doing.

On opening night she'll be gorgeous and should be so pleased with herself. :)

On opening night she'll be gorgeous and should be so pleased with herself. :)

I think you're right, and also think she's toned up over the run of the programme.

She's gorgeous, with a personality to match, and I hope she'll have a long and successful career.

Obviously it took a lot of determination, but she did have the help of the best trainers and nutritionists as it was on a TV show. Still she made the decision to go on that programme for herself and try and loose that weight, she looks fantastic and Cameron was bang out of order with what he said in the press.

That's terrible. Hardly fair, him being the producer, and it being just before the final. I'm glad it's backfired on him.

I also thought he was bang out of order when asked who was Nancy, and he replied Jessie is Nancy.

No she ain't.

Jodie is.:)

YES YES YES, was so pleased to see jodie win, watched the first show before going out and taped the 2nd part and watched it through a drunked haze when I got in...jumped up when Graham said Jodie was nancy...then fell over the coffee table!!!! Nothing to do with the alcohol of course :D

GOOD ON YA JODIE... (I did vote a fair few times before I went out :))

Bill Sykes is being played by Burn Gorman, who played Owen Harper in Torchwood.

Blimey, I don't think I will be going to see Oliver now. :(

I've just looked at the prices.

I looked at Feb 09 half term week.

I was looking for 4 tickets for me, hubby and 2 kids. My little girl is only 4 so there's no point in taking her and getting the seats at the top of the balcony.....she wouldn't be able to see.

I looked at tickets inn the lower circle.....they're £75.

No discounts either....£75 each for me and hubby, £75 each for kids.

That's £300 before we leave the house then we'd have to pay for travel, food and a night's accommodation.
