Family Nick-Names
The Chinese have a saying, "The much-loved child has many names". I was reminded of this, recently, when discussing the names we've used in our family and I wonder if you do the same. This is what I mean:-
My first name is Catherine but I've always been Cath or Cathie - except my eldest brother often called me Kate, my dad would sometimes call me Katya, Katrina or - Whacker!, my 2nd brother called me (honestly) Blurp and my mother had a habit of referring to me, when I was small, as Bunty (God knows why - Bunties are amply proportioned - I was as thin as a rake. :D) My brothers also had about 5 names each. My own children are Joanne [Jo-Jo; Joey; Jonah; Jay; Jago and Dan] Alan [Al; Ali; Lou (?); Lash and Tink.] Nicola [Nik; Nikki; Nixie; Nickertipoos and Neenee] and my grandchildren are Peter [Pete; Peter Potter; Pierre (by my late husband); Pedro and Spud] Laura [Laur; Lausie; Laur-laur; Elsie (her initials are L C) and Wawah (what she said for Laura when she was 2)] I find it natural to give pet-names (even our late dog had about 6 and so has the cat) but I know some people hate it. What about you? |

I got all the variations on mine from mum & dad and the rest of em... Jen, Jenny and Jennifer, then Jennifer Marie when Mum was mad at me .... Dad was called Samuel - but was never called that he was known as Sam or Sammy. Niece is called Melissa - but we've called her Milly all her life - when she went to school she was known as Melissa and Milly there. Now shes at the grammar school shes known as Melissa but we all still call her Milly.

Re: Family Nick-Names
My first job in London was working with a load of Sloane Rangers, and nearly all of them kept their childhood nick names.
As someone whose parents refused to give their children middle names, because they thought it pretentious, it took quite a while for me to comfortably call twenty odd year olds Ploppy (Peregrine's Nanny's toilet training name), Nu-Nu (Miranda, the 'newest' child), Ade (Lady Victoria, appeared late in Burke's Peerage as ada, a daughter also.) Glad this isn't just confined to the nobs.:D |

My staff always called me Sr P........and if they see me out and about they still refer to me by this name. |
