Wilma the tortoise.

1 Attachment(s)
My grandaughter is staying with me for a few days, and when it was announced that she would have to bring Wilma with her, had a fairly negative reaction. I must admit I have fallen for her .. she is sooo sweet and does appear to have a personality .. not what you associate with a reptile.

Don't think for one minute she is slow walking across my floors, have to keep a keen eye on her. She is well looked after, as advised by the vet, so no worries there, and don't think you can just plonk them in the garden as was the custom years ago. She cost quite a bit of money too, but I now consider well speant; my 18 year old grandaughter absolutely adores her. At the moment she is 4 1/2" long ... 5" when she pops out her head.. 16 - 20" is predicted at adulthood.

Go on admit it, she is sweet, 'ain't she. :D

Re: Wilma the tortoise.

Sorry, forgot to mention she is a leopard tortoise, so called because of her markings.

Not many people seem to have them these days, used to be lots when I was younger.

Yeah Wilma looks smart. Used to have one as a child, just the normal plainly marked type though…think it died one winter during its hibernation.

Re: Wilma the tortoise.

These don't hibernate Bonnyboy ... which is just as well, as seemingly lots of people used to bury them thinking they had gone on to Tortoise Heaven wrongly ...

Awww she looks very sweet

My aunt used to have one in Fleetwood, not that particular kind,
as this one was big enough to sit on when I was a kid:D

Not that we were allowed:rolleyes:

oooo she's loverly kate , when i lived in wales i had some friends who had a tortoise & they had drilled a hole in her shell at the back end & had fitted a long thinish chain on it so it would not get stolen (as was the thing then) the poor thing seemed quite happy with that (i thought it cruel)

I have a tortoise called Adolf, he is always running around like a loon. Sometimes he tries to gnaw on my big toe! he pushes the living room door open too when I'm not looking and goes down the hallway. It is wrong that tortoises are slow, they are quite fast!

Re: Wilma the tortoise.

Yeh, Mez .. my grandaughter mentioned this practice to me today and was cruel .. the shell is there for protection and any intrusion into this can only damage the organs beneath. There again, not as much knowledge then as now, and believe there are restrictions on allowing people to keep these creatures. Like they say "Not just for Christmas, could be for the next 100 years" . has to be a sort of family heirloom and changes to their habitat as they grow.

Re: Wilma the tortoise.

Well i could not find a soup but i did find a Salad

Tortoise Salad Recipe

Recipe Ingredients:

5 tablespoons of apple juice
Juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 pitta bread
2 tablespoons of soft cheese
2 cherry tomatoes sliced in half
1 apple
1 lettuce
Recipe Directions

1. Pour the apple juice, lemon juice and olive oil into a jar. Screw on the
lid and shake to mix up the ingredients.

2. Ask a grown-up (NOT LESS) to toast the pitta bread in the toaster. When toasted
leave it to cool then cut the pitta in half crossways. One half will be for
the body.
3. Spread on some soft cheese and stuff the pitta with lettuce and apple
slices and stand it up on a plate.
4. Ask a grown-up (DEFERNATLY NOT LESS)to cut a small segment off the end of the other pitta
bread. Spread and stuff this so it becomes the tortoise’s head. Stick
two raisins on the head with a little bit of soft cheese to give him some
eyes.
5. Ask a grown-up(IF YOU DID ASK LESS GIVE HIM A PLASTIC KNIFE) to cut the remaining piece of pitta into four equal slices
and place these as the tortoise’s legs. Top each leg with a slice of
cherry tomato.
6. Place the remaining salad around the plate. Just before serving, shake
up the salad dressing and pour over the plate.:D:D

IF you dont know why you should not ask less click the link below . it just shows your not reading all the threads on accyweb:D:D

Trust you, however, this just appears to be a vegetarian dish and quite healthy. Don't think would get much meat from Wilma's little legs.

As for Less, no, would not enjoy the addition of blood sauce.
