Like I said found this pic and even though I am catholic found it amusing. On the forum I saw it on one guy took offence and said it isnt fair being shown,as if someone would have put a pic jesting about other religions they would be up to thier neck in the brown stuff. What do you think?

Re: Saw this Picture and found it amusing :)

Personally, I found it ironically apt and mildly amusing but I can appreciate it would deeply offend some people My problem is in the fact that if a similar poster was circulated relating, say, to the prophet Mohammed the perpetrators would, no doubt, be prosecuted under some religious "hate" legislation. In this case, no one will turn a hair. Why does incitement to religious hatred, or blasphemy as many would perceive it, apply to all religions except Christianity?

Yes exactly the point I was trying to make,I find it totally unfair especially when its a joke and no malice or hatred is intended.

Re: Saw this Picture and found it amusing :)

I am not religious in any shape or form although I was brainwashed to be a Roman Catholic as a youngster but I think that it is in extremely bad taste to take the Mickey out of someone’s beliefs, regardless of what they are.

I didn’t see any disclaimer in the picture to state that it was a joke and that no malice or hatred was intended so in the absence of such it will be seen as offensive by some. Even if there were such a disclaimer it would still be offensive to some.

If the picture were created by a non Catholic, Catholics could see it as offensive. On the other hand if it were created by a Catholic, it is laughing at your own religion and we or rather you Christians are good at that. Re Dave Allen, Dawn French etc.

I wasn't offended at all.......

Re: Saw this Picture and found it amusing :)

Blasphemy against Christianity did used to be a serious offence. I'm a Christian and although I see it as distasteful rather than amusing (I do find Dave Allan and Dawn French very funny though, and Father Ted hilarious) I would tend to just ignore things like that rather than get all high and mighty about them.

Taken at face value it is a misrepresentation of what Christianity really is and when put like that it does of course sound completely bonkers, in much the same way that a biased newspaper report can make a serious news topic seem totally different from the actual events which occurred without actually saying anything untrue.

We have a sense of humour, sadly lacking in some other religions, (think 'Life of Brian') and we also have the ability to laugh at ourselves.

Its something I find find hard to understand thats all

Why do intelligent people think

a) there is a God

and

b) if there is a God then He is a good thing what we should all worship

Nori Brick 29-08-2008 11:53

Re: Saw this Picture and found it amusing :)

I used to ask that same question Niel, and the answer I got is, yes there is a god and that he is the only god, yes he is a good thing and if people don't want to worship him thats up to them, its called free will.

People are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Altheists etc primarily because they were born into it or converted by missionaries and there will be some who will make an informed choice to change in later years.

You are quite right it seems it is ok to insult christians.

As for ALL religions being wrong, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. I don't believe that people live their lifes by set rules but that is just my belief. I also don't think to follow a religion you need to go to church, chapel or whatever. To my mind a good christian will endeavour to live their life in a way that shows no disrespect for anybody elses beliefs. Shame that can't be said of all religions!!

I don't think people should be expected to explain their beliefs or lack thereof, the choice to believe or not is a personal thing IMO

Presumably the rules that you refer to are the Ten Commandments except there are more than ten, depending where you look.

Exodus lists 18 and Deuteronomy lists 16. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments But in general this is what most people would remember:
1. You shall have no other Gods but me.
2. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it.
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
4. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
5. Respect your father and mother.
6. You must not kill.
7. You must not commit adultery.
8. You must not steal.
9. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.
10. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Presumably the list is in order of importance and that says it all for me. The God saw it as he was more important than his followers’ actions. Hmmmm!

But this God was also a hypocrite. Did not this God command Joshua to take Jericho, Ai and other townships by force and kill all before him? Did not this God part the waters of the Red Sea to allow the Israelites to cross and then closed them on the following Egyptian army - drowning them? Did not this God kill those who broke the Ten Commandments?

However the laws of the land today, that I assume you obey, or do you go around killing, stealing and committing adultery, are based on the laws, or rules if you like, laid down thousands of years ago.

Time to get your head examined.

So your answer to those who take their religion seriously and don’t take kindly to someone ridiculing it, is to lighten up ya miserable pig, is it?

How about you respecting other people’s views instead of expecting them to bow to your commands?

Enough about you Jam Butty, can we get back on thread? Which I notice mentions 'Christians', not Roman Catholics, I think the original poster just happened to mention he/she was a catholic not that Catholics are or should be offended.

Why should we tiptoe around the enemies of logical reason because '"it's their belief"? Idiocy.

had to throw yoda in because people have actuay set up a religion based upon starwars but just like the bible in a few thousand years it will be forgot that starwars is fictional and will most likely be a legitimate god contending with the rest:D

I totally agree with you there Bernie. If people would just respect and tolerate each other we'd all be a lot better off. I love finding out about other faiths and belief systems, some of which fit in with what I believe and some of which don't but I still respect their right to those beliefs.

I'm more inclined towards Paganism, in harmony with nature etc.

Re: Saw this Picture and found it amusing :)

Oddly enough Padiham Lass I have a great deal of respect and empathy for Pagan values and especially when it comes to the attitude towards nature and the world we live in. I have known Christians whose interpretation of Adam being given dominion over the world was that he was allowed to use and abuse it for his own needs and desires. My personal view is the exact opposite. I see that as meaning he was expected to care for it and look after it on behalf of all living things. I also relate to the NA view of the spirit nature of all things. That is in harmony with the beliefs of my own church. I did a little online quiz a while ago to see which religion I most conformed with and the result was interesting. I came out only 96% Mormon! Busman says the other 4% is witch. (The rest of the family came out 100% Mormon! :D )
