way back when a blacksmiths son got lippy with his father , the father grabbed the nearest object to hand and whacked his son across the head with it

the son screamed out" ouch why did you hit me with that bastard file dad " and from that day on it was known as the bastard file ;)

I don't think any one can give a difinitive answer to that question,
but they are bloody rough and judder when filing aluminium.
