They had little trick like that, for clearing the pubs when it used to be 10pm closing, back in the early 70s. We used to frequent a place called the Aquarius Bar, A bell used to start ringing at 9-55pm and didn't stop until the place was empty, it was a very large and loud bell believe me, you didn't hang about
