In 1883, Sitting Bull was invited as guest of honour to address a celebration of the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway. Speaking in Sioux through a translator, his speech began: "I hate all white people. You are thieves and liars". The interpreter, taken by surprise, hastily improvised a string of flowery complements in English, with the result that the speech greeted with rapturous applause, much to Sitting Bull's amusement.

I will gladly lecture for fifty dollars, but I'll not be a guest for less than a hundred. ELBERT HUBBARD (1856-1915)

Onions, asparagus, daffodils, yams, hyacinths, garlic, leeks, tulips, chives and the Joshua tree of California (which can grow to be 40 feet tall) are all kinds of lily.

The lily was created on the third day, early in the morning when the Almighty was especially full of good ideas. MICHAEL JEFFERSON-BROWN

Abkhazian, spoken in the Caucasus, is said to be the world's hardest language to learn, with 70 sounds but only two vowels. Each verb has several million forms.

Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing. ROBERT BENCHLEY (1889-1945)
