Quite a few ... The Queen herself is very popular, as are William and Kate ... Charlie not so much, bit of a dork isn't he? ... there are some republican rumblings, but lots of folks seem comfortable with Canada's being a Constitutional Monarchy ... hey, if the system ain't broke; don't fix it.;)

All new citizens must take the Oath of Allegiance to the Queen of Canada.

I know that many think we are just like the USA; some think we are little more than the fifty-first state. But although the US is our major trading partner, our neighbour and our ally, our ties with the Old Country remain strong, as does our determination to remain an independent voice in the world.

Reading the Wiki blurb, it mentions the start of the "Cottage season"! :eek: Didn't realise cottaging was seasonal, I thought Hampstead heath toilets were open all year? :idunno: :D

May 24th, which I believe was Queen Victoria's birthday, used to be celebrated in England as Empire Day. I can remember at Primary School in the 1950s we used to have a pageant and one of the older girls used to dress up as Britannia, as portrayed on the old penny. I think around 1960 it was replaced by Commonwealth Day, which is celebrated on a different date. Strange to think 24th May has still persisted as Victoria Day in the Dominions.

I remember going to the high school in my girl guide uniform on Empire/Commonwealth Day. As you say Judith interesting that the holiday has survived in our overseas lands. Thanks Eric for reminding us. Mind you, would we want yet another holiday in May?

When we were young we didn't have either May Day Bank Holiday or Spring Bank Holiday. We had Whitsun, which fell so many weeks after Easter and so varied from year to year. Also before Whitsun it was usual for schools to have a holiday on Ascension Day. Some primary schools went on a flight (an uncommon experience for children in the 1950s) and saw Accrington from the air. On the 1st of May we were at school but we danced round the maypole in the school yard. We wore our summer dresses and it was nearly always a sunny day! Or is my mind playing tricks on me after all these years?
