Re: Please Help!
Facebook is good for some things. Gaming... Groups is pretty good. A mailing list I am subbed to moved to facebook so I haven't much choice but to use it.
|
Re: Please Help!
Rob, I wouldn't use it if you paid me....and it gets my goat to find that companies promote competitions but only if you are a FB fanatic.
This means that those of us who can't abide FB are excluded. I have e-mailed some firms with this observation and so far have recieved an electric toothbrush(ok, it takes batteries) a supply of skin cream(unsuitable for me - but someone will get it in their christmas stocking) some dog treats and a silky scarf. I think I would take myself off the mailing list and let the company know why! |
Re: Please Help!
I find Facebook useful for keeping in touch with my family - exchanging messages and seeing where they are and what they are 'up to'.
I don't play Facebook games or supply info about myself. Only yesterday I viewed photos my eldest grandson took on his arrival in Liberia (for work) - so it is useful to me, because I don't use it for 'frivolity'. |
Re: Please Help!
I use facebook for close friends, wouldn't vote for you because I don't know you, post a few things on the site, let us get to know you before you ask for favours from us.

Re: Please Help!
I admit to joining Facebook a few weeks ago.
I had taken photographs for the Accrington and District Welfare for the blind society when they went on a trip to Rivington Barn and later to Galloways ar Penwortham. I usually print them off and they are pinned up in the Bank Street rooms but some were sent to the President and he put them on Facebook without asking me. I joined as "Robin Hood" to have a look at them and see what he had written and within an hour of seeing them "Robin Hood " no longer existed. That was my one and only forage into the site. I am put of by what others tell me they get up to on Facebook, including broken marriage's and clandestine meetings with the other sex. Bah humbug, am I getting old and past it? |

I think I would prefer to find other ways to keep in touch. I have family in Australia and a brother who regularly works in far flung places.......India, China and Mongolia(both inner and outer)......we keep in touch by e-mail.....he sends me pictures of the interesting places, and the even more interesting, but unrecognisable food. None of us have considered using facebook to do this.....because we can do it by e-mail. |

I like facebook for general contact-most people I know are on it, people I don't see often-it is an easy way to keep in touch. I like it as a place to store photographs as well, and groups, public areas of it are pretty good, especially for help with some of the animal rescues I do. I don't use my real name or location on it though, or details of past and present employers/schools etc. |
Re: Please Help!
My niece is OBSESSED. Margaret, its obscene. Its all about how many stupid likes they can get. They do "hot or not" videos. She will get people to like her status and then her and her friends will make a video and say if a boy is hot or ugly. I have been joking with her calling her shallow.... here is some quotes
like for a rate and sentance!:* (selective) ive seriously been sat on my bed for 5 hours waiting for someone to come on facebook, ahha:D mail me a number and a question and i will answer it!:* like for a small paragraph:* , bored.... like for a rate of me and **** through mail!: Like and I will like back Man. This 5 times a day maybe even more. Sneaks Ipod touch and is on sometimes at 2am.... I am worried this crap is poisoning kids these days Quote:

This is one of them. As far as I know they don't have a data limit for photos like flickr do(of which you reach and then you have to pay) and so makes for a good way to host stuff. Quote:

Re: Please Help!
I use Flickr for photo's and I don't pay for it......this is because I am on BT......which allows me a Pro account with no limits.
I think that facebook has an insidious detrimental effect to many(not all) of the people who use it...and some of them are old enough to know better. My daughter used to use it for a professional group that she was part of...but no longer uses it at all.(she has been too sick to be interested in anything much) I don't 'get' the updating of status and such things...and the friends thing...people seem to collect them like some kind of trophy......they aren't real friends and many of them you could fall over them in the street and not know hwo they were. I cannot think of a single reason why I would use this social networking site. |
Re: Please Help!
Going back to the first post, I see the poster hasn't bothered to come back on site since. Just here to cadge for votes, I guess. We probably won't see him again until the next time he is after something.

Re: Please Help!
A bit sad that! He professed to be interested in taking photo's...and entering competitions...ah, but then ours isn't offering an Ipad as a prize.

Your write your blog on here that anyone can read, how is that different than me changing my facebook status to say what I have done? |
Re: Please Help!
I am on Facebook for keeping in contact with family across the globe -its a good way of sharing things with those you love and are connected to. I regularly chat to my mother and father, sister, son, nephews, neices and old friends.

As for my blog.......well, that has lapsed quite a bit recently and is in no way like what goes on on facebook. As far as I am aware, it is available for members to read, but unavailable for non-members(or that was how it was set up)....to my knowledge, Accyweb has nowhere near the same amount of members....and many of those who profess to be members come her relatively infrequently. Accyweb is also local, rather than global(even though we have some international members)....I think if you went out and about in the world and stopped someone and asked if they were a member of facebook then you would get many more 'yesses' to that question than if you asked 'are you a member of Accyweb'........and if you have to ask these questions, then, I humbly suggest that, perhaps you do not understand the forum that well. |

I accept that if it works for you then all well and good...but it has been badly misused by people for other reasons, and has a poor reputation. I can do without it in my already busy life. |

or you could just use Skype to keep in touch with the family
oh and by the way if the thread starter does not come back on in the next few days this thread will be deleted as it will be deemed as spam. |

I know the misuse(I didn't call it abuse...and there are subtle differences) isn't compulsory, but it does degrade what many people use as a 'tool'. I cannot think of one single reason I would use FB, as I can do the things I wish to do, using other means....which I am far more comfortable with. |

Re: Please Help!
I just had another look at this thread and was not very please by post 16 from Restless.
The small part of my text he quoted could be read in many different ways, depending on the mind of the reader. I will repeat my full post to clarify the matter. I don't want anybody who just reads the small part of the quote to think I am taking photos for immoral reasons. I will write more personal things on Facebook than I will on here because I know who can read what I write. One thing Facebook is rubbish at is being a forum. Group discussions on facebook can be a pain in the neck, posts get lost and they cannot be searched for. Selling pages are rubbish for the same reason. Historic discussions are useless on facebook as well compared to a forum. |
Re: Please Help!
Neil, you don't sound rude at all........I am aware that Accyweb is an open forum, but I think that its draw...the number of people who want to read what is posted, are much more limited than that of facebook.....and it is(I would think) much less well known.
I just do not like facebook. There is nothing about it that draws me to it. I write a blog, but if I look at the hits that many of these ramblings of mine have accrued, it is(in many cases) in low numbers....I obviously do not have much of interest to the cosmopolitan masses....and I don't need any FB friends. |
Re: Please Help!
If I visit the site as a guest, my blog cannot be viewed.
Unless you know of some way to circumvent this....I know you are far mor computer literate than I am...so you may know of ways to do this...but why would you? |
