Toy trains....hmmm
I want to know ... Why grown men (and even some women) play with toy trains or operate miniature railways?
Is it because we are all kids at heart?,is it because their grumpy old folk with nothing better to do with their time? Personally, I get that there may be a certain buzz that comes with creating something, turning it on and watching it work but I say leave the toy trains to the kids. |

I knew your response would be a tad wooden, I'm not toying with you Less,I want to track down and understand what makes grown folk play with toy trains.

Please don't attempt to hide your snide reason for starting this thread with the pretence that it is so you can gain knowledge. You needed to attempt another dig just as you said you would in your rather useless does it matter thread. Oh, do me a favour please don't like my posts whenever you do it makes my skin crawl. You Ace hole. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Why do.people collect stamps......spot trains, or buses??
In fact why do people pursue any hobbies? It might be because it relaxes them, gives them an interest. As long as what they are doing does not impact on you, then you need not be bothered about what anyone else gets up to. What they are doing is not illegal or hazardous. |

Lots of people have very mundane and harmless pursuits......though why these should be of any interest to you is quite beyond me. And what difference does it make if any of them were DJ's in the seventies.....just because some DJ's got up to no good doesn't mean that all DJ's were the same. If you really have a point to make then please don't pussy foot around. Say what you mean and then we know where we stand. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Accyexplorer, you like to reel people in don`t you?
I thought Less twigged it when he said you were` putting the bait out` But your post #3 reference `wooden, toying and track`is classic angling. Tight lines :D:D |

I make mostly but not exclusively model boats, I also collect repair/restore vintage electric clocks. Most of my mates think I am very weird but each to their own. :D:D:D:D:D

Lately I spend most my spare time pc gaming. DayZ being my favourite game. I am a member of an online gaming clan and...... well the DayZ map is huge and is quite hard to navigate. So I bought one :D See picture My current character I named SackHead, till they patch the game where you can't see through it after switching servers... Here is a few in-game shots. :D |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Not played pc games for quite a few years now. Did like Medal of Honour, Half Life et al. And who can forget Doom. Ah those were the days!!

Stop trolling- Anybody can see its what your doing. Also- Its against the rules. Everyone needs a hobby. Trolling some dude on a forum on a daily basis is a very negative hobby. Now that were on the subject of model trains,. Less do you care to explain what you like about model railway sets and/or the hobby in general I have always like computer games, lately I like gaming because it gets my mind off depressing and keeps me away from wanting to drink(of which I plan never to do again) playing in a clan- we use a software called teamspeak and use that to communicate whilst gaming. Not a serious competitive clan, mostly having a laugh whilst gaming. But. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people that enjoy gaming is therapeutic. And with DayZ there is strength in numbers (see pics) That being said. If you like trolling AccyEX. Perhaps you would prefer 4chan to accyweb... Alan. Medal of honour used to a be great game back then. Now not so much. But battlefield has taken over that one :D |

It would seem as if I'm defending a hobby enjoyed by both grown ups and children alike to idiot boy. No-one needs justify a legitimate hobby that they enjoy and although (as we all know), Accyexplorer has a very sad disliking for all people connected to show-business, I'll just put a link to a Train set I wish I could have built. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxjoOUw_wnE |

I wholeheartedly agree, the fact that some people attempt to use subjects or information freely available onsite as some form of put down just shows how sad they are and the person(s) they attack really have no reason to fear such idiots. Though like all those before him this guy will be back soon full of contrition, wishing to make amends with all on site and promising not to do it again, but he will, they always do.:( |

Cashy, I think most of them haven't the gumption for that.......they are just self centred egotistical twits who think we should have an interest in what they think.
But no names, no pack drill...and not meaning anyone in particular here. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Just chuckling at your post Margaret. The word "egotistical" reminds me of a song by Mac Davies.
He thought it meant something to do with the way he wears his skin tight blue jeans. From the song "Hard to be humble" Sorry, of track, better put my little Hornby chuff chuff back on the lines before the next express comes along. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
I am glad it made you smile Russell...that means my day has not been in vain.
Nothing at all wrong with having leisure pursuits...and it is rank bad manners to be scathing about what someone else finds interesting and diversionary. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
The game developers that made arma2 the game that was modded to create dayz two of the developers was sentenced to 20 years in prison for espionage because they were that dedicated to making the game arma3 as realistic as possible. They were caught taking pics of military bases.
The game arma 3 is that difficult it takes serious military tactics and mindset to play it. It is anything but silly. I wish I could play games all day. One guy that does makes £40k a month doing it. Well that's the power of advertising for ya. Alas I have a job to do.... |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
chuff chuff ........chuff chuff
I know a fella who is obsessed (if that's the right term) with his model train set (having a bit of fun with Less is just a bonus to starting this thread). He's not "obsessed" to the point he has to have one in his pocket at all times but he bangs on about strips of green fabric and how much each train of his costs more than other hobby enthusiasts I've had the pleasure of meeting. I guess its one of them things 'i just don't get',I get the liking of trains part, even i like the sight of a old steam engine now and again (its even been known for me to get the odd drop of adrenalin (as a child) as it passes by,but it doesn't last long).Model trains don't seem a particularly cheap way of watching something go round in circles for hours. In my childhood I preferred scalectrix personally but that had the tendency to get a little tiresome after a while,I guess like most interest's there ok in moderation. I prefer even toy trains in comparison to playing on a Xbox/PS4 (yes Restless i'm looking at you :D). Why? well the problem with a lot of modern gaming is that someone else does most of the work for you. If I play Halo 11, the story is always going to end the same way, even games that try to offer a pseudo 'choice' (cough cough Fable) cannot break out of this. There's simply no comparison with something that requires a little imagination :p |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
I prefer playing PC to Xbox/ps4 I still have the xbox for retro gaming. (8bit)
Ive never been into halo. DayZ and the way some people play it gives good insight into the human condition |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
'Just having a little fun with Less'.....is that what you call it?
Well, I never. Fun was much more imaginative in my day....and like these games that you decry, the 'having fun with Less' is always going to end the same way. |

I know that the internet is a very poor medium for getting across nuances, and that it suffers from the fact that you do not have the additional cues that body language gives(in a discussion)...but there is still a requirement to be thoughtful about what you post. Personally, I find it a bit sad(unhappy sad, that is) that someone who has the potential to make interesting and informative posts...to enrich the forum, fails to do so...and resorts to what is, basically, childish behaviour. We all have our idiosyncrasies, our foibles.....we can all get heated and irate at times.......and sometimes (only sometimes) this can make for interesting reading, because it polarises opinion. I respect your right to have the opinions you have, but I do not like to read stuff which is aimed at ridicule of either the forum or a member of the forum. You need to think before you hit the 'submit' button. And before you accuse me of being in cahoots with Less.......I want to tell you that I make my own opinions about threads/posts. I am capable of independent thought. |

There's a tendency, when a number of relatively sane people are faced with a fool, for the group to agree he's a fool.
That's not ganging up, it's not a clique, it's just common sense. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Ah, but how long will he get away with it?
I get the feeling he knows his days are numbered that's why he's increasing his unruly behaviour. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Many of them, to be sure.
I like to think I am honest in my posts, but also respect the views of others. It would be boring if we all had the same ideas. I do not enjoy seeing people come and ridicule people who are doing nothing to harm anyone, but on the other hand can see no reason for the health and safety of the public upheld by employers taking a modicum of responsibility for the practices of their workers. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
All them posts I've been threatening, abusing and making personal attacks against folk
More like Less playing the victim again, I thought a bit of banter would be water off a ducks back for the living legend that is 'Less'. All my teasing comments and I was barely making a dent in his ego, who'd of thought, all that was necessary was a gentle goad by way of a thread about one his possessions..... ... I hope his wheels fall off his trains  |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
So you call that teasing?
I wonder, what everyone else calls it? |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Quote:
Your 'teasing' is done in a very juvenile way. If you want to ask a question because you are truly interested in the answer...then by all means ask....but not so that you can score points(or at least that is how you seem to see it) off another member. That is dishonest posting.......and as Stevie R pointed out you were baiting a hook......waiting for a response(trolling). The canal is the place to dangle hooks...but make sure you have the appropriate licence first. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Why oh why oh why oh why do some people turn interesting threads into a slanging match.
Why not start a special section for such childish activities. All who want to join in could put their name forward and others who wanted to keep a thread on track could do so. I had a large model rail layout when I was as a child and still enjoy going to the annual model rail exhibition at the local sports centre. There you can see how much detail, time and patience grown men have put into the hobby. |
Re: Toy trains....hmmm
Russell, I don't think Jason is interested in why adults have interesting hobbies...like model trains, train spotting etc.
He had an entirely different aim in mind.(or at least that is the way it appears to me) |
