One saying, which annoys me and I even heard it on TV today is, "off of". As in "he got off of the bus".

The Rolling Stones were guilty of that with their song "Get Off Of My Cloud".

Is this better?

Why can't radio and TV presenters pronounce sixth? They all seem to say sickth these days.

I get annoyed at people using the word of instead of have, it's just laziness in my opinion.

Entirely agree, it does my head in.

I hate listening to someone who at the end of every sentence goes UP on the last word. It makes every sentence sound like a question. You end up not listening to what they say, just waiting for each last word. Is it a South if England THING?

Also 'like'.
'I think, like, I can't come up with a whole sentence in one go, like'.

Something called 'Vocal Fry' really irritates me. It seems that many young women (especially in North America) choke back on their voice to end sentences in what is almost a croak. Are they trying to sound more convincing? More authoritative? To me they sound ridiculous.

Re: Pronunciation

The "like" thing bugs my ass (or is it "arse") too ... And now it seems as if one has to begin every declarative sentence with "so"

Over here in the colonies, one can always tell a Brit by the way he pronounces "Ottawa", or "Toronto".

Re: Pronunciation

Following on from the "like" bug, my bugbear is people ending a sentence with the word yeah as a question. I can't think of an example, so I won't give one, yeah?

Back to pronunciation, for many years my dear mater, a fan of Agatha Christie, pronounced Poirot as Poy Rot. I once pronounced parentheses as Parent Thesis.
