Most shops take on Saturday staff, and the supermarkets pay well for saturday ansd Sunday staff. If you're going to college anopther good idea is to do tea-times in a chiiopy. I worked at Burnely Rd Chippy through college from 4pm to 6.30pm every night.

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

Those of you under 16 are going to have a really hard time finding work probably due to the fact that most companies can't get insured for staff under 16 and they obviously don't want to take risks with you hurting yourselves or whatever. When you are 14 you do work experience with school because the school takes the responsibility for anything that may happen to you.

What I suggest is that you try the local hairdressers, I remember a lot of girls from school working in them sweeping up hair and making cups of tea. This was before minimum wage for 16yr olds existed though so the girls worked for very small amounts of money, but they enjoyed it and I believe they got discounted hair care, so you might want to just try that!

Obviously this applies the same for lads as well who are looking for jobs. You may feel a bit silly walking into a womens hairdresser and asking but it's worth a try. I'm not sure if barber shops take on people at all but again, you might want to just ask when your getting your own hair done!

I'm just curious how to fit in that much work over the space of 2, or 3, days. That isn't a lot of time to fit 3 jobs.

And do you actually know the meaning of the word obnoxious? I don't think I said anything that was worthy of being considered obnoxious there.

It is quite easy to work at 3 jobs over three days....she may work for three different employers.....one on each day or she may work mornings for one employer.......afternoons or evenings for another employer two days per week and a full day for a different employer....or any combination of the three.
And as for asking if Nicola68 knows the meaning of the word obnoxious......I think she knows the meaning quite well....and will probably be along to give you the benefit of her education very soon.

There is nothing obnoxious about asking how you work three jobs over the weekend. Very few employers are willing to take on people for just a few hours because the paperwork just isn't worth it, or the training.

Plus you need to have a life as well. Presumably she is working the weekend because she is in education during the week.

I just don't see the benefit to it. You would struggle to get a highly paid graduate job without the evidence of getting the work/life balance right, and they expect you to show you know how to fit in fun activities into your schedule too.

It's just hard to see where the balance lies in that sort of lifestyle, and I was curious to know how she finds the balance. Is there something wrong with being curious to see how that can be done?

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

This person probably has her time management worked out how she wants it.......you do not know how long she plans to keep this work regime up......it may be just temporary. They may be jobs where she only does a few hours, or fills in as and when needed.

And there is nothing wrong with being curious about how it is done....but there is a way of asking the question in a softer way.

To Rebekah, Well done.....you deserve to prosper.

I didn't ask the question in a hard way in the first place.

'Just out of interest, how do you fit in 3 jobs over the weekend?'

This could have quite easily have been 'Surely you must be a liar, that isn't even possible. Prove it.'

There was nothing obnoxious about my question. Younger people and my friends always ask me about my timetable in a similar manner. There is nothing wrong with doing so.

And as for temporary work as a suggestion, yes, this possibility is EXACTLY why I asked.

I am sorry, but I think you two are just trying to cause an argument here when there doesn't need to be one.

well, Blazey you are entitled to think what you like.

Firstly, you could have congratulated the girl on her enterprise and then the question would not have sounded like the second statement that you make.....which is what I took the question to mean......that must've been your thought too(or you would not have written it)......and if you can work out how she does it, then why ask the question????

Just asking.

Praise that someone has three jobs?

I used to have a friend in Accy who considered himself to have several jobs. One of them was being a drug dealer.

I'm not entirely sure there is something to praise in having three jobs. It could potentially be stupid if you are studying at the same time, as the recommended hours of work for a student is no more than 16 hours. As MY job is to discourage things like excessive work alongside studies, I don't think I should just throw out praise without knowing the full facts.

It's like that woman who got done for stealing from the PTA at St Mary's. She used to sell home made cards to the kids for, for example, Mother's Day with £1 coins taped in. Now that would be a praiseworthy act, but in retrospect, it was probably from the money she stole. So certainly not worthy of praise.

I don't think for a moment that this young lady does anything illegal or unethical, but I'd be wrong to assume that and just praise her regardless. I could be praising her for doing something I think should be discouraged, and that would be far worse than simply asking her about her schedule.

Margaret Pilkington 04-07-2009 18:04

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

so if you don't think she is doing anything illegal or unethical, why do you bring up theft and drug dealing?

You are also making assumptions about someone who was convicted of stealing from a PTA. Isn't that just a little bit dangerous?

And it is OK for you to make assumptions that the person who has three jobs is unable to study because she has three jobs....shouldn't you leave that judgement to her tutors, or better still to the girl herself?

Having three jobs means she has got out and looked for work that people say is non-existent....that in itself is worthy of praise.

And is everything that you don't agree with 'stupid'?

katex 04-07-2009 18:06

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

I didn't find Blazey's question 'obnoxious' at all ... was about to ask Rebekah the same question, but was pipped at the post so to speak.

Rebekah had been on here asking about jobs, and we are always curious to know how things turn out, aren't we ... which she did come back to say had obtained three jobs. I was hungry for more as wanted to know what type, and would have encouraged others (which is what she was attempting to do).

Anyway, she only stated had 'got' three jobs, we don't actually know if she took all of them up. :D

What gives you the right to say people are being "potentially stupid" if they have three jobs? Surely the best people to comment on whether this work is impacting on course work are people directly involved ie Tutors who are qualified to do so. And since when did it become YOUR job to discourage excessive work alongside studies? You are so full of your own self importance it is not true.
Well done Rebekah and good luck with your studies:)

When I was growing up, my mother had three jobs.......she cleaned the Drawing offices at Howard nand Bulloughs(morning and evening) she cleaned at the Elite Snooker clubon Saturday and Sunday mornings....and she worked at Catlows Fruit Market on Broadway every Tuesday and Friday.......OK, so I know she wasn't in education at the time, but she had four of us to bring up, so it was need that made her do these menial jobs.
If she hadn't done these jobs we would not have eaten.

Yes I do know the meaning of obnoxious but I am not going to humour you with the definition as you obviously already know.......

You are obnoxious not the question, with the way that you worded your post you were implying whether she was telling the truth...... It could have been asked in a far more softer tone by congratulating her on her efforts first and then asking what you wnated to know!.... can you not see how it could have been misunderstood? Or is that the potential law graduate in you coming through?

Also what you consider good pay may not be the same as Rebekah...... money seems to be a huge motivator to you:rolleyes:.... She may only be earning a small sum by some standards..... but at 16 it is probably substantial to her and enables her to do what she pleases........

I do not want to cause arguments as you said in a further post.... after all I am not the one who has been described as a troll:eek: but when I see something that I don't agree with I will post my opinion whether it is liked or not..... just as you do:rolleyes:

Rearding fitting in 3 jobs.....I have friendsat university who do indeed have 3 jobs over 3 days (not exceeding 14hrs of course:)), one in particular is a full time student, an OU lecturer, works in admin at the uni Library and has her full quota of clinical patients all to pay for her tuition fees, she has excellent time management and has got an average of over 85% for her 2nd year so in well on her way to her 1st class honours degree..... I think that having and holding down 3 jobs demonstrates that you can effectively manage your time. It is at the persons descretion as to having "fun" time and it depends on how they get their fun:)

I can only applaud the girl for her perseverance in getting the jobs it is great to see, I can only hope that my daughter has the tenacity to do the samewhen she reaches 16.... also to thank Rebekah for having the time to let everyone know the outcome of her search for employment..

West Ender 04-07-2009 20:49

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

On this occasion I'm on Blazey's side. I didn't read her question as being obnoxious. There was no implication that Rebekah couldn't, shouldn't or wouldn't be able to do 3 jobs, she simply asked "How?". Maybe she didn't "soften" the question or add emoticons but that's not Blazey's style. The question, in essence, was perfectly innocent and, I would venture, if anyone else had asked it, it would have drawn no criticism.

Blazey knows I will give her "what for" if she deserves it but I won't stand by and see her, or anyone else, unfairly damned for no other reason than her reputation. Bear in mind the old saying, "Give a dog a bad name and hang him".

blazey 07-07-2009 23:31

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

I work with students aged 10-18yrs old most days of the week. Anything that would unwisely impact on studies is discouraged or worked around.

I'm not going to praise anything that I don't know the full details of. I work two jobs myself and I know how much impact it can have, but I still don't spend every single day of my week either studying or working, hence why I was curious what sort of a life someone could lead if they are straddling three jobs over three days, and those three days being the only three days they potentially have to themselves in the week.

Yes there ARE many ways it can be done, and in many situations it is NECESSARY for people to work such hours. I have a friend who is now a successful barrister after obtaining a first class degree, regardless of the fact that he also worked 40 hours a week in Little Chef. He wouldn't lie and say he had no social life through university as a result of that though, and he regrets that very much now.

To be honest, if it had been me who had posted that I had three jobs on this thread, or even the two that I did have, you'd have called me obnoxious then as well. It isn't just me that knows this, lots of people know it. Thankfully, I don't work for the money, I work because I love what I do and I'm fortunate enough to be able to do those jobs. Not everyone loves their work though, and the fact that someone fills their life with 1, 2 or even 3 jobs that they COULD get no enjoyment out of just because they want the money or the praise for having them just makes me feel sad. If that is what people want to work for, then fair play to them, but the only form of respect I can get is laced with sympathy that they can't just have one fulfilling job that makes them satisfied.

Margaret Pilkington 08-07-2009 13:17

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

It is a fact of life that if we want to pay our way we have to work.......work is a necessity.....it is good if you can get a job that you like.....but it isn't essential to like what you are doing.
I feel very sure that, although there are some people on here who admit to loving their work, if you removed the paypacket, then they wouldn't go just for the love of it.

I once did the most ridiculous paper round for just £1 a day. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time I think? What a stupid job that was.

Can't say I've ever been a glass collector. Not done any bar work whatsoever.

Jobs are hard work to get. I found temp agencies are the way forward if you're trying to find jobs to go along with education. I've had a wide range of jobs that have given me a great amount of experience. It helps to have dipped your toe in a lot of ponds when it comes to jobs, because it's so difficult to decide what career to commit to so having a go at a lot of different types of role really helps define for you what you definitely do and don't want to go into.

I wouldn't go into anything food related again... and I think bar work would tie into that. Anything that involves me carrying plates and glasses is a no no :p

BBC News - Should children be expected to work?

A bit misleading that title ! Still the majority of people spoken to did work of their own free will & there was only really one against, but again I don't quite think she got the question in perspective.

If the kids can get jobs & they're happy to do them why not ? I personally think it makes them better adjusted to face up to the real world when the time arrives. But sadly there are quite a few who have no work ethic & expect everything on a plate, this only reflects & highlights the way the modern society is.

Re: Part time/Casual/After School Jobs

Some tips from my experience as a teenager lookin for a job:

Get up really early and get yourself down to the market whilst they are unloading and ask around - someone has usually not turned up (due to it being 6am on a Sat morning!). Don't be shy, ask everyone and if they say "no" then ask if they know anyone who does need help. I got a great job in the indoor market when I was 14 which went from 2 hours unloading to working on the stall to getting a Summer job at the wholesalers we went to.
When I left school I wrote a number of letters to companies I was interested in working for, made myself look smart and went around and hand delivered them (again to show you are willing to get off your backside, anybody can write an email!). This led to a job in I.T. and I haven't looked back since.
Show willing and show some initiative and when given a chance make sure you are reliable and make the most of it.

One other thing - consider yourself lucky, I'd do anything to be 16/17 again!
