Looking for odd things to do in summer...

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone fancies anything doing for them in summer for a bit of cash?

Maybe you need someone to go shopping for you or your elderly relatives, maybe take the kids to the park for a few hours or just general unskilled type stuff.

I have a very recently done CRB check, and am open to considering anything you may think of, even if its just the odd spot of cleaning or something. Minimum wage is fine of course, but I may be willing to work for less depending on what the job is.

Send me a PM anyway if you think you might have something I could do for you over the summer period. Would prefer that questions and responses were kept to personal messages please.

Are you any good at cooking, cleaning, carrying someone home from the pub, (make sure your purse is full and you'll need plenty of patience it could be a long wait), if so yes, I think I can keep you occupied, do you have references?

I can cook and clean. Depends how heavy you are for the carrying home from the pub issue!

I am sure I can provide references if needs be, one would be academic and one would be from a task completely different to the one you are asking me for though :p

If you are serious though, please PM me and we can discuss this further :p

Can I just add that the main reason I am offering my services is for things to do and meeting new people who could use an extra pair of hands. The money isn't really that important.

I can also do baby sitting if people need that doing. I used to babysit for 4 youngsters and I am sure the family would be happy to reassure you about my abilities if necessary.

It won't be references she needs, a medal for bravery might be more apt. Then again you both might need one :p

Shame you are not home next Wednesday 9.30 a.m. Blazey, Gayle is pleading for people to help to clean up Pet's Corner at Rhyddings to make it look at its best for the Orchestral event in the park on the 15th.

Without any sarcasm and innuendos from Neil about the goat and the cocks...:D, bet you would have done this.

Still suppose they will be looking all year round for help .. no money involved though I presume.

When my son came home for the Summer during his first year at Uni (had jobs in Manchester already) .. he contacted the Cummins Mellor Agency in Accrington 01254 239100. They were very helpful, and found him two temp. jobs, which helped with the funds. This was 6 years ago though, so not sure what they are like now.

I have read and re read this post and it seems to me that you are clearly encouraging would be employers to break the law by employing someone on a wage below National Minimum wage levels:eek:
I am astounded how can a law student approve of let alone encourage something that is illegal?

Legally it sounds like she is asking for a job.
Re reading the original post again I see she is asking for 'cash'. Can I use this opportunity to remind everyone that the Inland Revenue expect us all to declare ALL earned income including cash payments

OMG, it'll be against the law for kids to earn a quid for wahing the car next.

Or the Scouts will be offering VAT receipts for bob-a-job

Good on ya Blazey for trying. I would ask for a baby sitter, except a) I dont go out much and b) God knows what the likkle one will be spouting after a night witth you ;) lol x

blazey 07-06-2008 16:20

Re: Looking for odd things to do in summer...

I don't intend on being EMPLOYED by anybody, just offering a hand around peoples homes in return for a couple of quid or a cup of tea and a chat! I intend on volunteering during the summer anyway, but I thought it'd be nice to offer fellow accywebbers if they need a hand with anything.

I suppose it could be suggested that I am offering to contract my services to those who need it. Students can earn quite a bit before being taxed, and I am sure a couple of quid isn't going to be taxworthy.

I find it odd how you presume law students should persuade people to stick to the law though. jobs in the legal field are few as it is without encouraging people to not break the law. Fair enough if I was in the police force :p

Anyway, I am not asking to be employed, it wont go on my CV as my job history, it is simply offering a helping hand and being given in return what you see fit. It doesn't have to be money.

Technically Scouts will be fine as long as they declare their income and they will not offer VAT receipts as they are are a registered charity.

Doddgy area I think. If the money is collected on a voluntary basis for a charity then it should be ok, but if the money is collected by individuals - regardless of their age then I would guess it should be declared as self employed earnings. Remember even children, and students, can only 'earn' up to the single persons allowance level, the IR does not discriminate according to age and lack of knowledge is no defence.

blazey 07-06-2008 21:01

Re: Looking for odd things to do in summer...

I am a student, tax applies differently to students so then they can actually earn decent money without paying it all back to the government.

Obviously this depends what tasks people want me to do for them anyway, this was meant to be an advert offering services out of good faith and kindness. I don't think I know anybody who messes around with tax when it comes to babysitters who are just doing it on a one off basis, nor do I expect people report people who are doing shopping for the elderly.

If they do, I personally think that person must have some severe moral problems. Do you expect an elderly person to start accounting every time they get someone a bit more agile to do their shopping for them for a tenner on the side or whatever? Seems like the tax office would think their time was being wasted if you ask me!?

Don't worry Blazey you would have no problems declaring earnings to the inland revenue if you work for less all his money will be spent in the pub you would get nothing from him believe me.
He might if your lucky buy you a drink though.
but you have to make it last while he has his 4 pints.:D

I just have nothing to do over the summer :( I have 2 works planned, one working as a student ambassador on some summer schemes here in Lancaster and one shadowing a barrister. Just need something to fill the rest of it now!

You should have paid NI too :)

The same rules apply to students as they do to any other employee.

I did. I was actually on fifty quid a day, which seemed a fortune to me back in 1984, but I had no choice but to declare it and pay tax and N.I.

When my son worked for Weatherspoons during his summer holidays (only about 3 years ago) he was taxed at source the the IR also made some assumptions about tips received!!

He did of course pay NI its part of joining the real world.

As employer I wish it was so easy as just to say, 'Im taking this student on because they have nothing else to do and I will just give them a few bob and a cup of tea!'

Re: Looking for odd things to do in summer...

I think students think they have different rules because generally they have a part time job and won't usually earn abouve £105 a week which is the figure for tax & ni these days. However this figure applies to anyone not just students.

The tax rules fo students with summer jobs are different from students with term-time jobs. Just make sure that you sign a P38(s) rather than a p45 if you take a paid summer job and you should not be taxed on your earnings. More details on this link

What is your problem exactly? You haven't even spoken to me personally for 6 years so what would you even know about me.

I'm offering my services, people either want them or they don't. If they do they can personally contact me and payment and tax can be discussed according. What is wrong with society? I just offered to do shopping for the elderly and all of a sudden we're ranting about tax!?

If I don't find anything to do this way I am going to just be doing volunteer work anyway, so if you need something doing, ask me, it'll be considered for nothing unless you feel like I deserve to get myself some lunch or whatever. Obviously if you want me to do your shopping i'd appreciate the bus fare if the shop you want me to go to is a long way away and stuff like that.

I am just BORED, I'm not intending on breaking the law. I do not intend on being EMPLOYED, therefore it isn't breaking the law to not want minimum wage!

No wonder why people my age just sit around all summer, its much more simple!

It's not quite the same, because a student who has a job for the holidays should be allocated a different tax code to the rest of us, which enables the summer job to be paid without tax deductions (reducing the need for a rebate of overpaid tax at the end of the tax year). However, this will only happen if the correct forms are completed at the recruitment stage. A P38s is a declaration for students working during the summer holiday only and will generate a nil tax code. A P45 is the declaration form which will generate a basic rate tax code and each week's pay will be taxed based on an equivalent annual salary.

and implying that I am part of such industry too with the sounds of it. I am volunteering all of the summer if nobody on accyweb needs me, if I was doing this for easy money I'd just get a normal 9 to 5 job instead.

I just assume that there are people who would like a hand with things they wouldn't normally be able to afford or manage by themselves, or get lonely and fancy a bit of company or whatever. I offer my services to people who just need an extra pair of hands once in a while and all of a sudden I am being attacked by people who just seem to want something to complain about.

This isn't a personal rant at you dave, just in general because it is a shame that people cant just accept that somebody wants to do something out of goodwill for once.

whatever happened to 'starving students' seems to me once upon a time students were glad to pickup temp jobs, christmas post delivery and fruit picking during the summer ,to eke out their meagre council grants, now it seems they are all 'trust fund babies' who have enough money to eat 3 or 4 meals a day and loll around all summer . Seems labour is taking great care of the college crowd

My student ambassador job is very well paid, so it will be enough to feed me for two lengths of summer holidays if necessary, and I don't need to pay my mum any board or anything like that, she's just glad I'm not a chav.

not bad things, per se, just some of your opinions lol

Actually it was just a pretty bad joke. My sense of humour needs a short sharp shock, me thinks lol

I knew both of these things too, funnily enough my last comment to onlyme was a poor attempt at a joke to cover up the fact that I completely ignored her 'offer', but in all fairness it was mainly because it wasn't really an offer!

Most children don't want to talk about law and politics funnily enough. I certainly don't talk about them with my own brother and sister anyway!

Your views on politics arent the problem, besies you never know, I may actually get a life at some point lol.

Main point I was trying to make was the fact that I would have no reservations in 'employing' you, you should be commended for offering your services, and If I can think of something I need help with, I will most definately give you a shout lol

I need a gardener, a driver and painter as I live on farming location in Cumbria. Would you be willing to me my researcher also in Summer. I cannot pay as a post grad student and do all those jobs myself. PM me for information.

All of us have trials and thank you Less. In 20 years not much has changed in jobs that are vital to survival in many forms. Where once I had a gardener we do it ourselves. Where once we had tradesmen we do it ourselves. Where once there was work there are few safe jobs. Seeing young students at universities in UK there is the rush for work and work during and after. Most of our farmers and businesses have family unpaid labour and people who have been out of work who work and then do jobs for supper. I know of seven grown men who do just that and commute home to parents who are elderly one weekend on four. Thank you for the positive reply Less.
