Re: Jobs at Primark

it's not as clear cut as it seems, they are capping the applicants at 1000 then taking it down to 500 then 250 then 200, people are applying from Preston, Bolton, Burnley and as far away as Manchester, the people at the jobcentre arent happy because they aren't advertising it through the jobcentre, they are only advertising it through the Primark site

Just curious , Is there a reason the jobs advertised only "part-time" ....16-20 Hrs per week ? , Would have thought for any business a full time staff was "cheaper" to train and manage , plus 1/2 the office management costs .
Or is the ad designed to attract young 'trendy looking' college kids .
Thanks .

Dont think thats the case, think theres loads of stuff they can wheedle out of giving "Part Timers" oer here, least there used to be. Holiday Pay used to be one of em, as well as hols, also excluded from works pension schemes. probably still the case?

IMO it will be hell to work there, seeing how bad the Manchester one gets.

Re: Jobs at Primark

Part time staff is cheaper, they dont get breaks so they dont have to pay them for that

summat else fer you to ponder on Part time staff are very unlikely to be unionised as they cant afford the subs in the main, cos of the crap wages, if ya scratch the surface n look deeper, thats certainly much cheaper fer the "Employers" in the long run.

Re: Jobs at Primark

I think they prefer parttime staff because of their opening hours- which are usually quite late.
employing full time staff would mean only a couple of hours at the end of the day for the part time staff to take over- I suppose it is easier to spread the hours more evenly if workers are part time if that makes sense?

it does offer full time on the application though.

Re: Jobs at Primark

Pretty sure there will be a mix of full and part time staff. If I was employing staff I'd rather have part time staff than full time staff as it offers more flexibility when it comes to sick days, holidays etc. Pretty sure these days part time staff are covered by employment law regarding holidays etc as much as full time staff.

Re: Jobs at Primark

Ye my daughter told me about this job after seeing it posted on here and ive applied too. Ive got an interview on Saturday so im hopeful :) At least it will be the first interview ive been offered after applying for lots of jobs so its a step in the right direction !! I did apply for full time and said id be willing to accept part time. I think the idea of more part time jobs than full is to make sure more people are in over busy times and if someone is sick then its not so many hours to cover etc but ye everyone has entitlement to holidays with pay etc

flashy 08-06-2010 19:04

Re: Jobs at Primark

Its also to do with breaks proceedure shorter hours requires less time for break allowance than over 6 hrs per day, so thats convenient for employer in retail to keep staff on rota and more staff covering the shop floor.

I'm going to put this but don't tell Mel or she will want some rights :D

Employment rights of part-time workers

Part-time workers have the same statutory employment rights as any other employee. You do not have to work a minimum number of hours to qualify for employment rights.
As a part-time worker you have the right to:
  • receive the same rights of pay as full-time employees
  • not be excluded from training simply because you work part-time
  • receive holiday entitlement pro rata to comparable full-time workers
  • have any career break schemes, contractual and parental leave made available to you in the same way as for full-time workers
  • not be treated less favourably when workers are selected for redundancy

Re: Jobs at Primark

Ive applied for this. But i hope i get it, might be a lucky chance tho. because ive just finished school and havent got any propper work expierance. except for my two weeks work placement.
It was really confusing there application. it asked me if i was under 16 and i clicked yes. and then further on it was blabbing on about 16-24 or something. it was quite confusing.
im applying because i have a late birthday (youngest in my year) and by the time i get the job, i will be 16 and be going to blackburn college so... (if i do :/)
