Where are the jobs?
 

Seems that those in charge think that there are jobs around, but if you look at what job centre advertises then there is nothing out there.
It is great that there are people here looking out for any new jobs, but would it not be more useful(both for those looking for work,and those compiling the stats) to have all local jobs being advertised in one place, otherwise I can see someone thinking job centres are a waste of money and closing them down. Accrington job centre is already only really a place to call into to see if anything is going on.
Having spent most of my working life in IT, I worked with agencies a lot, and know how they think. Thus I tend to disbelieve what they say in their job adverts unless they give real info in advert.

I never had one job that was advertised.

Was all word of mouth.

So it can work.

Just as cold calling, dragging yourself round places you think you might be suitable, can be.

I think it depends on the type of work you are looking for. I know that my job will never appear in a Job centre due to its complexity and specialised skills required. As such it will always be via sites such as ITJobs, Monster etc

More manual jobs work well through JC ( I've had a couple that way early in my career )

Many years ago( down South) the local jobcentre had a special office for more professional jobs. I just think that they should be handling the whole job spectrum, otherwise I wonder if they are worth the money spent on them and their brand new buildings.

Job centres used to work, way back when there was near full employment in 60s, as industry died, they inherited the title "Joke Centres" which i found in later decades to be much nearer the truth.

Not even sure why they call them Jobcentres anymore. They are just benefits offices.

The whole jobs market is one big joke. I have foundther service(?) provided by agencies very patchy, unless you happen to fit the criteria they are looking for, exacly.
I only recently signed on , after a very badly contracted job for 3 years. One reason for signing on was to try and get paperwork properly sorted out. I had to pop over to France after a couple of days, for a family funeral, and was told I therefore had to sign off, and then sign on again(paperwork even more in a mess) . Apparently you are not allowed to go abroad(even Europe) if you are unemployed, and I was given a very poor excuse for this rulling, something about not wasting tax payers money, yet they continue to waste a lot of money in that particular department. I wonder what they would have said if I was going for a job interview in France.
My daughter has just got a job which doesn't start for a few weeks, yet to still get unemployment benefit(I use that term intentionally) she has to still go through the process of looking for work, wasting everyone's time and money.
I aim to go self employed as I will be getting about same money through tax credits without the hazzle. I will also have time to do some real work, benefiting both the community and hopefully me.

Cashy, i always refer to it as 'the joke shop', i've been signing on since January and i've had no help from the Jobcentre whatsoever, even though i have had to apply for 6 jobs a fortnight, i've asked about courses and no one seems to have any answers, they are kin useless

I once had an interview for a very good offer of a job in S. Ireland, went to the Joke shop where I was signing, told them I was going for an interview the following week and asked would I be able to claim for travel & accommodation while I was away, yes I was told until I showed them the letter, then not only could I not have any help but I was told that I would have to sign off for the period of time I was going to be away and then make a new claim when I came back.

I was told that this was because I wouldn't be available for work if they needed to call me in.

I mentioned that Eire was part of the European Union and wasn't I therefore able to claim as we are supposed to be able to work anywhere in the Union.

I was told I would have to put a new claim in, in the country I was going to to cover my unemployment there.
A relative in S. Ireland inquired for me and I would have had to be resident over there for 6 weeks before I could claim anything, as I was only going for 3 days it wasn't much use.

all in all that really is a total farce..you would think that if someone is getting up of their backside to make the effort then they would get all the help required..
the whole system from back to front is all wrong.

I wonder if the European job seekers who come here, and claim Child Benefit for children back in their homeland, have to wait six weeks?

If we are supposed to be a continent without borders, and free to work and travel anywhere, you shouldn't be seen as not being available for work, if you are searching for a job in France, Spain, Ireland etc.

exactly what I was told, yet do they announce it to the world.I am sure that i it got properly debated someone would challenge them at a high level. Now that Scotland ans Wales have their own 'assemblies' /'governments', what is the difference between Scotland/England and Eire/England.
I mentioned this to my nephew who is in final year or so o becoming an international (Europe) lawyer based in Brussels and London, and he didn't believe it. He said some countries were trying to be protectionist but were falling owl o European law.
The latest attempt to save money will probably cost this government even more. Once I have jumped through a couple of hurdles for jobcentre, I hope to go self employed, and acording to government benefit website I will get as much in tax credits as being unemployed, without the hazzle. If this works, I will recommend others in similar positions to me to do similar, which might result in unemployed total going down and hence less requirement or an inflated Works and Pension government department. I don't like putting people (?) out of a job, but in this case I will have little sympathy.
The obvious thing with Europe would be to equalise the benefits and rules governing unemployment and benefits. But for the moment if you are unemployed you seem to be treate asthe lowest of low. Some people get extra help, whether they are suitable or not. If you are not the right age or not been unemployed long enough then some jobs are not avaiable even if you fit the job spec perectly and actually want the job.

The Tax Credit scheme has been radically changed, after last week's emergency budget.

I'd check again, to make sure you'll get what you think you'll get.

Tax credits are changing but mainly for higher owners, If you are on basic pay I don't think there is any change apart from credits not being increased/. I would recommend anyone intereste to try out government benefit calculation website, as it shows what you get and what you don'tr get. I assume(?) it is up to date
