Re: some more for you

Reckon No 4 is the old Co-Op offices -- Oakfield House across from Glyn Web. GW was once "Croft House" -- A Co-Op Dept Store having a Jewellry & Furniture Section. Also hired out Fancy Dress for the then many local Concert Parties etc. Remember going to be rigged out about 1930 for my role in "Tom Thumbs Wedding".

Owd Bert, if you look down the side street between glynn webb and the bingo you can still make out to co-op sign on the side of the building, i see it the the other day whilst sat at the traffic lights

Hi, I recognise the number 1 photo, but I will keep it to myself for a while, to keep the thread going.

Re: some more for you

Just to alter the thread slightly......I've just had a look on ebay and there is a 1908 postcard on there of "Warmden Falls, Accrington".

Is there something missing from my head? I have never, ever, heard of Warmden Falls...can anyone advise on where these are? Do they possibly have another name? Have they been altered/bricked over, whatever?

If you are not familar with ebay, then just find their website and enter Accrington under "search"

Re: some more for you

Aye, its a grand tinted picture I reckon...Warmden Falls?? I recall somewhere at the back of my mind hearing the name before, but I don't know where it is or was. I have a feeling it was somewhere up near little Blackpool, or Preistly Clough.

I'll have a look at my maps and docs from early last century, and see if I can dig up more info.

Good thread, Tealeaf.......interesting

Re: some more for you

Verwarmden or later spoken as Warmden is old Dutch for Warmed Water or warmer water. Could be near an old mill or such like. Wasn't there an old mill in Baxenden, near the old Man-Accy railway line?

Or somewhere near Broad Oak??

Minds thinking now.......

Re: some more for you

Well, thats the only place I think it must be.....It's certainly not the Tinker...it must be the Hyndburn up near it's scource - although I do remember the little stream in the Valley at the back of the coppice which had a waterfall...I just have no knowledge of the name.

Atarah 24-03-2004 09:55

Warmden

The Warmden flows up near Baxenden, down into Accy I believe

(We Have Warmden Avenue up Bash of course)

Am still thinking ... think the Warmden flows down from the hills maybe, then meets up with the River Hyndburn behind the Bridge Pub in Accrington - still thinking ....

Re: some more for you

What/Where is that piccy from? It looks like it could be from where the river is covered over (in the town centre)......except there does'nt appear to be any river, just a pile of rubble.....intriguing!
