Accrington Train Station

Just been sent this smashing view of Accrington train station, showing Howard and Bulloughs (known now as The Globe) in the background.

Re: Accrington Train Station
This brings back memories. I can recall climbing the wall at the top of Grant Street near the underground, to watch as the steamtrains let off steam before entering the station. I can also remember putting pennys on the rails and being really impressed by the way they were flattened after the engines had rolled over them. Simple pleasures which kept me occupied for hours.

Re: Accrington Train Station
That driver should be warching the signals ahead, instead of smiling for his piccy to be taken. No wonder there are accidents on the railways.
That train is off to Manchester, I believe. |
Re: Accrington Train Station
Amazing how the railways have fallen since then, what used to be a massive train network is now a shambles.

Re: Accrington Train Station
That was when we HAD a line to Manchester. Not to mention a real railway station.

Re: Accrington Train Station
Churchman Phil:
Track plans of Accrington station..... At the risk of getting jumped on for being a true geek, the book you need is : Signalboxes on Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway lines (NE Lancashire) by Chris Littleworth, published by the Signalling Record Society 2002, ISBN 1 873228 21 X. There's a challenge for Accrington Library! As regards 'the other train' in the original photo - it looks like empty stock in platform 1 - the Manchester bay. There was also a small goods yard on that side of the station Rgds 45378 |
Re: Accrington Train Station
Actually it turns out it's not such a big challenge after all - there's a copy in the Local studies part of the reference library!
