It looks like it says "S U BLUE" and "1887"

I haven't a clue where it is. Talking of clues. Will we get any if we're all stuck?

Another good one, Atarah.......it could be several things; it's just so hard to tell because of the obvious erosion. Other than a milestone, it could possibly be a boundary marker or it could even be what is left of a larger structure such as a cattle/horse trough.
There appears to be 4 letters on the stone...? U D C (I can't make out the first letter) and a number 18?? (I can't make out the last two digits). UDC of course, suggests Urban District Council (i.e. the status that Church & Ossy used to have) but I'm not sure about Accy.
I'll say then it's a boundary marker and I bet it's up Manchester Road way!

I would guess its inscription is
B S U D C
1877

Boundary Stone Urban District Council 1877
Haven't a clue where this would be located, but BS often marks the division between parishes

Yes I can see how you see that now. It doesn't help with all the other bits carved into the stone presumably a form of graffitti. I have a feeling it's somewhere in an Avenue Parade or Peel Park direction. Yes? No?

Hey Tealeaf, how come, when you are a Church man, do you know about things in the Manchester Road area of Accrington? :confused:

It is indeed a boundary stone, and is sited at what I call the "top end" of Royds Avenue, just below Hollins School. I suppose its correct siting is "Junction of Royds Avenue/Hollins lane.

I have to say you are totally correct Weary Tourist with your assumption that the initials stand for Boundary Stone Urban District Council 1877.

It is indeed a boundary stone, there should also be one in the garden wall at "Greenmount" 235 Manchester Road. There should be a third one in the wall, facing down the space between 140 and 142 Southwood Drive, Baxenden.

Oh dear lol. I don't believe it. I was there only yesterday and must have gone right past this stone without even seeing it!!

My powers of observation are sadly lacking. It must be the germs I'm still suffering from.

I am kicking myself trying to recall why these boundary stones often appear with 1877.
Was it an act of lunacy, parliament or both.
