Ok get uploading your 5 photos
Theme is

architecture, old buildings

susie123 25-02-2013 12:32

Re: new photo competition 5

I wonder if Gremlin would mind clarifying whether the theme of Architecture, old buildings, includes any architecture or just old buildings?

Many thanks.
PS well done for the winning pic in the last comp!

Re: new photo competition 5

Well, I have added four pictures.......old buildings which have some architectural interest too(at least, I think they do).

Hi all
Well....I added one picture from my visit to the UK last year.
Unfortunately it loaded before I could add text as to what and where it is
This is a piccy of "The Folly" at Settle ,built in 1670 and taken from the upstairs window of the cottage I was renting.

I think that is what I was looking for when I chose the subject for the competition.
Maybe parts of old buildings which have some architectural interest.

Hope that answers Susie's question.

Well done Russell on winning the last competition...a worthy winner....and glad my pics for the new comp are on the right tracks.

OK Russell thanks for the clarification. Too bad most of my pics are of modern buildings! :(

That's a toughy, off to Palm Springs for the month and all of my photos are on my home puter. Maybe I'll find an old adobe somewhere.

There must be some fine old building around Morecambe Susie,
There could be some interesting gargoyles or fancy corner stones or archways

It was just a subject which came up when Mick PM'd me.
Maybe I should have thought longer.

Don't worry Russell, I've got some pics from my archives to upload. Can't get out to do photography at the moment anyway.

It's a good subject and I'm sure there will be plenty of fine entries.

Morecambe's not really old enough to have gargoyles etc - didn't get going as a town till mid-1850s. Our house (1879) is one of the older ones in town and we certainly have nothing of interest!

Re: new photo competition 5

Architecture can be modern as well. In fact it can be any age at all.......even a row of terraced houses has something architectural about them.
What about that hotel on the front...the one they did up.......isn't that a sort of Art deco style

Of course it can, that was my point in asking, but Russell wanted old buildings, fair enough.

I have quite a few modern buildings in my files but in my opinion the Midland hotel at Morecambe is not at all photogenic.

But not in this competition - it's a modern building.

Re: new photo competition 5

no, what i meant was, isnt it how you interpret the brief, i may class that as an old building as i can always remember it being there, therefore it isnt "new", where someone else may think of old as over a certain age, Gremlin supplied the brief, its up to the competitors to work within that brief as they see fit

no need for the "sigh" sue

Wasn't aimed at you Darren, just got woken up from a snooze by "Jack" from India wishing me a nice day etc etc. All I need really the way I feel at the mo.
Would like to be out there in the sun taking pics even if only the Midland Hotel but think I might fall over if I tried, also several other things that slow me down just now.

AArrgghh another call as I type this!

Apologies anyway - and I've uploaded five photos of old buildings now, if we were still allowed ten I'd probably add some modern stuff.

Re: new photo competition 5

The Midland hotel was originally built in 1933 and was designed by Oliver Hill, with sculptures by Eric Gill....so I would have thought that it fitted the brief......and had I been in the vicinity I would have captured it and posted it to the competition.......but then that is just me....an 'ornery' being.
I think the rules of the comp are loose enough to allow for this......it is, after all a personal interpretation.

Thanks M how did you guess - I'm frustrated as much as anything - want to be on the go!

Tender and delicate just about sums it up...;)

Re: new photo competition 5

I think I should make clear my intentions regarding the photos for the competition before another war breaks out.
Most if not all building have been designed by an architect, new or old and I am sure that some new building will have some interesting features so why not include them when you find one.

I had to go to Accrington today and it is amazing what you see above ground floor level on some of the older building, there are great windows and little columns etc.
I was sat in the solicitors and noticed on one building opposite had a big stone with "Burtons Buildings" carved on it.

Keep on posting photos, however old the architecture is.

I can well imagine you are feeling like a caged lion.......when you have been busy and doing all of your life, it is hard to sit back and let others do the things you know you could do just as well(or even better) if fate didn't lumber you with an imposed bodily frailty.
Hang in there Sue......and keep your chin up.

Yes, that is the building but the stone I saw was on the side near to the NatWest bank, opposite Ackland Bond solicitors.

The photo is of the side of the building, you can see the Town Hall on the edge of the photo which is opposite the front. There is a carved stone saying Burtons above the little side door which if I'm not mistaken in my younger days was the entrance to the Elite snooker club?
