Onions are such a pain in the eyes i always end up with really sore watery eyes, i tried wearing my glasses while cutting them albeit reduced the sting & water a little but not a cure:( Im sure someone will have better suggestions:)

Re: Onions

Keep the onions in the fridge, they don't make your eyes water as much when cold.

Re: Onions

keeping onions in fridge is great, but the strong ones still make your eyes run ooooooooo, what i have done in the past is put a teaspoon in your mouth, it works , or when you have peeled the said onion run it under cold water then chop.

I hate chopping onions. Tried keeping them in the fridge, chopping them under water but STILL they manage to get to me. Never tried a teaspoon though so thanks Mez. :)

Re: Onions

Do teh sensible thing and get the kids to chop them. Leave them in a sealed bag untill you need them

Re: Onions

Somehow the words "kids", "chop" and "sensible" don't seem to belong in the same sentence. :D

Re: Onions

Right let me give you this tip FOR FREE!!!!!

When chopping your onions, burn a little tea light candle near to where you are dicing them, the candle burns all the fumes off the onion that make your eye's water.
And it works honest.:D There ya go, happy chopping

Got to try that one slinky as i peel slice and dice in water, but at least if done in water then lees chance of you hurting your eyes if you rub them if itchy.

Re: Onions

i always cut the root off first, not the top ,,,then peel from there, and i always buy spanish onions rather than english...they seem to be the worst culprits

Re: Onions

I dont know if I've dreamt this but I'm sure I was told that if you run your wrists under cold water before chopping them your eyes wont water, I have tried it and it worked but It didn't affect me that bad anyway, maybe I've made it up, let me know if you try it!

I don't know if I've dreamt this or not but I think someone told me to put a peg on my nose whilst chopping onions. I've never tried it so don't know if it works but it sounds sort of logical - all the tubes are connected in there aren't they?

Haven't chopped an onion in a long time. Buy fresh onions already chopped from Asda. Worth the extra money.

I can honestly say that chopping onions has never really affected my eyes that much. I do tend to chop them very quickly though.... Which might explain why I only have 4 fingers on my left hand..:D

Re: Onions

I bite down a knife and it seems to work.Do not know why but i suppose its the same as Mez's method.Another thing i have done is to freeze the onion and then instead of cutting it i grate it down. The onion taste is there in the food but you can hardly see it.Do the same with Ginger and spices.Always fresh and lasts longer
