Digital Camera Problems

Little one had got her mitts on the camera a few month ago to take some pics of her mates but God knows what she's done! She says she definately hasn't dropped it or anything.

It's a Sony DSC-P51. 1st problem was the lens wouldn't open, we gave the batteries a really good charge but now the shutter opens but there's no image at all on the display screen. We've wiped the memory card, we've pressed the reset button to set it back to factory settings ..... lost as to what to try next. Anyone any ideas or does it sound like a shop repair job?

entwisi 21-11-2006 11:23

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Not sounding good, can you try some other batteries/main adaptor in case they are knackerd and not holding a full charge? I must say its not sounding good for it though.

Re: Digital Camera Problems

My Daughter has a Dsc Sony and was having the same type of problems
she brought it over here for me and i took it to garth dawsons they want £30 before they look at it and sent it away if you have the work done they will knock the £30 off the price of the repair hers was going to cost upwards of £140 so decided to buy a new one.

Tinkerbelle 21-11-2006 11:30

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Cheers entwisi, just going to root the box out and see if it came with an adapter but I don't think it did. Will def try that first, especially with those prices Mick. That is extortionate, especially when it looks like it could be a weak spot on the camera. I was having a quick look on line and found a camera forum were they were discussing it.

Tinkerbelle 21-11-2006 12:01

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Mick, have you seen that on the Sony website? Whether or not it's still available, Sony realises it's a glitch and are offering to fix it for free. Was your daughters one of the models it names?

mthead just gone to buy some brand new rechargeable batteries to rule that one out. If it doesn't work I'll give the phone number a try.

Mick 21-11-2006 12:12

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Have a look here tinks

Tinkerbelle 21-11-2006 12:26

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Cheers Mick I'll let you know when we've tried these new batteries. :)

Yes that's the same problem I've got with mine, no imge in the LCD screen.

So you'll be able to get that camera you have sorted out too, won't you?

WillowTheWhisp 21-11-2006 12:51

Re: Digital Camera Problems

That's good of Sony to admit there's a fault and offer free repair. I hope you both get them fixed. :)

Tinkerbelle 21-11-2006 14:57

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Right Mick, I've rung and spoke to them, all a very painless exercise they were very helpful. They have given me a free post address to send the camera to, with a note inside explaining it's an I 2 problem.

Mick 21-11-2006 15:00

OMG !! If they do I'll call you round to listen to the phone conversation, which would probabably start with "Yeah, yeah nice try Buster! Why do you want my memory card? Have you been speaking to accymel or sommat?" :D

Re: Digital Camera Problems

I don't f***ing believe it!

Those ba****ds at Sony have just sent me an invoice to the tune of £114.56 for the repair to the camera.

They are trying to tell me that it wasn't the same problem that is covered by the free repair service, it's a flexi-tube(?) that's come lose. Massive coincidence that a flexi-tube coming lose has the same impact on the camera as the LCD chip malfunctioning (free repair service) isn't it!

They have gone a head and done the work on the camera without even asking me if I wanted to proceed with the repairs at the cost.

I'm waiting for someone from their service department to get in touch as I got no sense out of the first muppet I spoke to!

Free repair service my a**e, I thought it was to good to be true!

entwisi 07-12-2006 13:44

Re: Digital Camera Problems

talk to CAB, I don't think they can do that. You sent it for a free repair, if it didn't qualify they should have notified you before proceeding!

Tinkerbelle 07-12-2006 14:00

Re: Digital Camera Problems

OMG!

Just had the call back, it's not Sonys policy to inform a customer before any repairs are made.

He was useless too, but I got an address for a letter of complaint to go to.

Grrrrrrrrr

accymel 07-12-2006 14:14

Re: Digital Camera Problems

That is well out of order, they should actually inform u of how much & why before carrying out the repairs i think its a con job to justify their crap quality of that camera & make a bit extra - i would seek further advice about it tinks:)

Tinkerbelle 07-12-2006 14:30

Re: Digital Camera Problems

I don't bloody believe it! I've just been back on the site were the information is and it was updated on the 24th of November to include a little bit about repair charges ........ that was not there when I saw that website the first time round and the bloke I spoke to on the phone didn't say anything of that nature either. Another coincidence that I made contact on the 21st

Thats something u can tell them how come they have just decided to update the information after u send them the camera for repairs:confused: sounds really dodgey as i said before they were probably crapping bricks after an influx of complaints came thro:rolleyes:

Mick 07-12-2006 14:35

Re: Digital Camera Problems

This has just been added to there site .

"Note: If the fault is not the CCD chip, then normal Sony Central Services charges apply (please call for details)."

This was not on when we first found the site

Tinkerbelle 07-12-2006 14:36

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Mick, you read the site that was not there was it!?!

Mick 07-12-2006 14:38

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Nope that has only just been put on the site

if it was not the CCD that was the problem then they should have informed you of the price of repair,
before hand and you could dicide if it was worth the repair as you can get a new camera for that price these days
They should not have gone ahead and repaired it as you sent it in for a free repair
I would not pay

Tinkerbelle 07-12-2006 14:43

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Not only decide if it was worth repairing, it would have given me the option to search around for a more competetive repair service

WillowTheWhisp 07-12-2006 14:49

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Oh that is nasty and very, very sneaky.

accymel 07-12-2006 14:49

Re: Digital Camera Problems

I would also have a word with trading standards too.

WillowTheWhisp 07-12-2006 14:56

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Even though they've put that new bit on their website they should still have contacted you to get you to authorise repairs if they discovered it wasn't that fault. Of course you will never be able to prove whether is was or not. You only have their word for it that it was a different problem because now it has been repaired so you have no way of checking. Sounds decidedly dodgy.

Tinkerbelle 07-12-2006 14:58

Re: Digital Camera Problems

How strong do you make a first complaint letter? I'm not used to this kind of thing. I've composed the basis of one , I'm just trying to think if I've covered everything.

I would still ring trading standards before u send it off cos they could point out some arguement to your complaint that u may not know of. If u want me to read proof it let us know:)

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Well i dont think i should ring them now for all i know it could be a ploy for everyone who sends their camera in we can charge £xxx they will make a killing how do we know if it qualifys for the free repair if you dont send it in? and if you do send it in and it wont qualify and you will get stung. (soo wrong).

Tinkerbelle 09-12-2006 19:07

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Yep :(

I'll keep you posted on what happens with this Mummiboo. I've sent a complaint letter off to Sony and have been in touch with Trading Standards lot, they said to give them 3 week to reply before they can take it up with them but they've agreed they are bang out of order ...... so fingers crossed ;)

Yes willow a letters gone to them and trading standards said I have to allow them 3 weeks to reply.

Why should I tell them to keep it though Cherokee? It belongs to me. In my opinion them keeping my camera borders on theft.

I don't want or expect a replacement, I just want my camera back. They can even unfix the repair that they did. At least that way I can look for my camera to be fixed at a more competetive price than £114 to solder a wire back on.

I think so yes

WillowTheWhisp 09-12-2006 23:10

Re: Digital Camera Problems

I don't think they legally have the right to do unauthorised repairs.

Tinkerbelle 09-12-2006 23:12

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Sony said they do. It's not their company policy to inform the customer before repairs are made ........ I say, is it not now! We'll see about that shall we ;)

WillowTheWhisp 09-12-2006 23:16

Re: Digital Camera Problems

Whatever they say their policy is, you only sent it in for the free repair they offered so I think they are on dodgy ground. Good luck and stick to your guns.

Tinkerbelle 09-12-2006 23:18
