Re: Household

Use plastic pegs to seal bread, tea cakes, frozen food etc.
Flat coke very good for fetching a sparkle to your Loo and sink.
Got a spot then in an emergency dab on a spot of toothpaste and let it dry. Works a treat.

Salt on spilt red wine brings the mark out of any carpet.

Also salt poured on to slugs kills the little buggers.

ground coffee & garlic keeps the slugs away, to.....they won't cross the line.

Re: Household

Use cheap lemonade in a vase instead of water flowers last longer.
Warm water with sugar works well but remember to cut the stems a little each day and top up.

Tealeaf 29-10-2003 07:56

Re: Household

Use plastic flowers - they last longer still

ANNE 29-10-2003 15:49

Re: Household

:o  Believe it or not, babywipes are excellent for cleaning patent leather shoes and handbags. Discovered this by accident. They are terrible for cleaning babies bottoms.

Re: Household

Baby wipes have many uses Lettie. Brilliant for cleaning trainers.
Good for cleaning paint work. Infact they have a multitude of uses round the home.
Wipeing the phone etc.

Re: Household

any good tips on cleaning windows,,coz no matter what i try(and thats almost everything) they still look streaky!! :(

ANNE 03-11-2003 17:19

Re: Household

Have you tried a solution of warm water and vinigar applied with scrunched up newspaper or a soft cloth and then dry with newspaper.
Leaves them smear free in theory at least. I to am useless at cleaning windows.

Re: Household

Old vynle records make brilliant plant pot holders.
80s records seem to melt better. lol
They make unusual potholders and keep your window sill clean.

Re: Household

For nice clean windows, I've heard that a drop of cider vinegar in the water does the trick - never tried it, but many people have told me in works.  :)

Fangio 07-11-2003 17:51

Re: Household

Ordinary vinegar will do.  I've used it for years on the inside of my car windscreen - gets tobaccco stains off a treat
 :)

But don't use them on real leather cos it takes off the protective layer of the leather taking the colour as well !!

Always remember with anything being tried for the first time to test on  a place thats not noticable.

Re: Household

had a look but my stain book only says .... sponge with warm water then use a carpet shampoo then when dry sponge with ammonia solution (1.5ml ammonia to 500ml cold water)
Don't know if it works  :-/

janet 09-11-2003 09:48

Re: Household

If your cat or dog has been sick on your carpet, a quick squirt from a soda syphon will help get rid of the smell, once you have cleaned it up. dont know if it works on urine though.

lettie 09-11-2003 18:33

Re: Household

Had a neighbouring tom cat that used to sometimes sneak into my kitchen when the back door was open and he would sometimes leave a little scent on my floor. I used to cut an onion in half and rub it over the carpet/lino. It would reduce the smell a bit and didn't smell particularly oniony. (used to sprinkle salt on the carpet first, leave for a few minutes, sponge off with warm water then rub with raw onion)

Do your bit for the enviroment by recycling your christmas cards birthday cards etc.
Turn them into gift tags. It saves a fortune they are personal and unusual.

Re: Household

When cleaning windows clean the inside with vertical strokes and the outside with horizontal strokes..... that way you will know whether the streaky bit is on the inside or the outside......and I use methylated spirits

Re: Household

Of you've got a particularly greasy window (kids hands are good at this) it may take a couple of goes before you get it clean properly. Grease streaks, even if you think you've got it all off. I hate cleaning mirrors and windows.

Went to Asda The young lady stacking the shelves said they didn't sell kids hands so have not been able to try your tip Willow.

Would it work just as well with a kitten & some windowlene? (I did try a fully grown cat once but found it too large to get right into the corners).

Have you ever heard the horrible noise when a cats claw slides down glass? It's like chalk on a blackboard terrible!

Re: Household

Turn the paws upside down then!

For the tiny bits in the far corners, use their ears!

WillowTheWhisp 02-12-2004 13:59

Re: Household

You're missing the point totally - if using a cat you must get the cat's co-operation.

Starve it for a few days if it refuses to cooperate ;)

You are missing the point completely Willow, Oh, how cruel of you to consider using a LIVE cat, just think of the extra work involved in cleaning those streaks off the glass made by it still breathing!

But if you use a dead one you've got to spend time keeping the fur in a decent condition.

Keep it alive and it does it itself!

In this throw away society, use it once then just dispose of it, over your neighbours wall is a good place, many a good conversation I've had about the decline of mankind when we can treat cats like that, (I suspect they use pigeons for the same job thats what I find on my side of the wall).
:p
