Try putting clean water in a washing up bowl and putting them in that over night until you get a pump. the clean water will have oxygen in...enough for over night.

jackyalex 09-05-2007 23:23

Re: help fish upside down

Don't blow 'air' into the tank through a straw. That is your outgoing air and not oxygen rich. You've absorbed your oxygen from it when it was your incoming air. :(

Re: help fish upside down

well the obvious thing to do is turn the tank over then it will be the right way up:D
mez had a fish that would swim upside down it had a damaged swim bladder

Re: help fish upside down

There will still be 16% Oxygen (O2) in the expired air as the human body only burn off about 4% of the 21% that is in normal air, there would be a slight increase in the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) within the water but the blowing through a straw should help but still need to get new pump.

WillowTheWhisp 10-05-2007 07:32

Re: help fish upside down

Oooh I stand corrected Ber. My Dad used to tell me not to add CO2 to already Oxygen depleted water.

Ber999T 10-05-2007 07:39

Re: help fish upside down

Any oxygen is better than none willow, as in the use of Mouth-to-Mouth (with a barrier now a days) is better than none at all but if your still not happy to do that the advice is to just do chest compressions and leave breathing until help arrives. Cant do much on fish so sorry for thread wander there

WillowTheWhisp 10-05-2007 08:44

Re: help fish upside down

:D for a minute there I was imagining chest compression on a fish!

There is still plenty of oxygen in your exhaled air, that's how CPR works, if there was no oxygen in your breath what would be the point of blowing it into someone's lungs. I can't remember the % but you only absorb some of the oxygen in the air you breath.

Next time I will read all the thread before commenting, I did not notice our local paramedic had said the same as me :o :D

Re: help fish upside down

as some one said above swimbladder

dunno what the thing is but its something to do with digestion

there's some stuff called melafix that shops sell - its paracetamol/anadin/laxative all in one for fish - its magic stuff. put in a dash of that if it does it again. its like an infection swimbladder is and this cures it
