Giant Moth!

4 Attachment(s)
Tonight after work me and daddiboo decided to stop off at the vauxhall garage to have a nosey about at the cars and a huge moth sat on one of the wheels caught my eye it was that big daddiboo said its not a moth its a leaf i said its not look and moved it!

Anyway Daddiboo wanted to take it home for a better look (typical fella) so we put it in a bag and came home it was that big it was nearly taking off with the bag it was wafting all over the place!

The point of the thread is i was wondering if anyone could identify it for me (by the way it was not harmed at all and after the pictures were taken was nicely put in my privet hedge.

The pictures are not that good because it wouldnt keep still it was too busy laying eggs!! when it stayed still it covered the ashtray the kids thought it was a BAT!

Oh why me again everytime i try to add a picture its file size is too big i will have to post the pictures tomorrow i will ask daddy nicely to resize it for me then i can put it on. Sorry.

Well I hope you can get the pics online because I'm dying to see it now. I wonder if it some strange exotic moth which has come here in crysalis form in a crate of bananas or something.

Good grief! I can see why the kids thought it was a bat! That is one humungous moth!

Re: Giant Moth!

It's a 'Lucky Brown Moth'. It's easily identifiable because it's brown and it managed to grow so big before somebody squished it, therefore it's lucky :)

Re: Giant Moth!

Blimey, it is big.

It would make quite an impact if it got in your sock drawer. Never mind making a hole, it could eat a whole sock!

Perhaps this moth is the answer to all those missing sock mysteries.:D

Is it a Death's Head Hawk moth? I have looked at the pics but can't really tell.
It looks about the right size and the colouring is right too. We have them near us because their favourite habitat is Japanese bindweed...and there is a lot of that growing near us.

Re: Giant Moth!

I am going to answer my own question here.....Yes it IS a Death's head hawk moth.

I have to disagree. I think it's a Poplar Hawk moth.

Oh, Ok......I found one very similar to that and was informed that it was a Deaths head Hawk moth......but I am no expert. See, i told you that if you asked a question on here someone would have tha answer :)

Re: Giant Moth!

Although having looked again the picture you have put on doesn't have the two circular markings of the one that mummiboo has posted.
It is certainly one of the hawk moths though.
