Re: potty training
Crikey that takes me back a few years, only thing I can advise is clap like mad when they do something in the potty and leave them to run around in the house with no nappy then a quick move to the potty if you spot something happening :o
Then when they have used it take them up to the toilet and show them where it goes, then flush.... when they are using it regularly have another potty by the toilet and get them used to going in the bathroom to use it...gradually progressing to using the loo Good luck, |
Re: potty training
Hi Misskitty, I have always done it the same way, found it works for me, sometimes messy, but hey! You need time, obviously no nappy, and take the little one to the potty regularly, not too much, or they won't want to go on it, after several hundred attempts (seems that way), and a lot of hit and miss, the target will be hit (the potty), make a fuss! treats, and hand clapping! The little ones soon get the message.

Re: potty training
use undies, not pull ups, it helps if they can feel the wet, lots and lots of praise and tell them it doesnt matter if they have an accident..get an interesting potty.. the chair ones are good.. use it as a chair for a while, then change it to the pot.. try buying toys and books they are only allowed when they are sat on the pot...

Re: potty training
I have had him a whole week without a nappy on....what does he do???.............
keeps all his wee n poo in till i put a nappy on for either his afternoon nap or bedtime nappy :( i keep asking him if he needs to go n he just says no, he does sit on the potty but wont do owt..... Thankyou so much for the replies PLS keep them coming x |
Re: potty training
and remember, no matter how stressed you get and how long it seems to take.... how many children start school wearing nappies?? it will click eventually
|
Re: potty training
try putting a nappie in the pot and putting the pot where he cant be seen...some like to do it in private
|
Re: potty training
Reece was just 2 when i potty trained him, as HR has just said make a fuss of him when he does something, dont ever be tempted to put him back in nappies once you've started though, it may be tough at first but persivere (sp) buy about 50 pairs of underpants because believe me you'll need them for little accidents, always take at least 2 spare pairs out with you wherever you go, if i was out shopping and Reece had an 'accident' i used to take nappy bags with me for the soiled underwear...this sounds silly but you'll need to do it (or at least i needed to)

Re: potty training
I assume you work in a nursery or something emamum23???
|
Re: potty training
i never put him in nappies at night when i stopped them during the day...he only ever wet the bed twice, i guess i was lucky, it is tempting to go back to nappies at night though, but i saw that as a step back, each child is different
|
Re: potty training
try saying you forgot to get them... and just 'find' one at night
|
Re: potty training
nah... ive got loads of kids:eek:
yeah, i worked in a nursery.... lady of leisure at the mo:not_ripe: |
Re: potty training
2.5 years of age is the right age to start, in my opinion. I don't think that children are ready before then. Once you have decided to start, buy some underwear, possibly with one of his favourite characters on e.g Bob the Builder or Thomas the Tank Engine, and never put a nappy on him again during the day. If you put nappies on him when out shopping or in the car then it leads to confusion as the child can't figure out when it's ok to just wee and when they need to let you know first. Don't bother with pull-ups. This also confuses them and they need to feel the effects of weeing in their underwear.
Explain to the child what you want him to do and no matter how many accidents, don't go back to nappies during the day or all your previous efforts will have been for nothing and you will be back to square one. Persevere. Keep nappies for naps and night time only. When he does go in the potty make sure you give lots of praise, hand clapping etc. :D When he has been dry for 2/3 weeks during the day you can try leaving the nappy off at nap time but I would wait until he's nearer to 3 years old before leaving the nappy off at night time. I'm only sharing what worked for me. I did this with my two and day time potty training only took 2 weeks before they got the hang of it. :D |

Re: potty training
I'm here! Nothing really to add, apart from I got him special 'big boy' spider underpants so he really didnt want to wee on them. I also got one of those padded toilet seats that they can sit on, cos i know even know he gets nervous when he's sat on a big toilet.
Just lots of praise, and making yaself look a fool when they go on the potty lol! He still wears on for his afternoon nap and at night time, but a lot of the time, if he's wearing it when he's drifting off to sleep, he'll take it off and go the toilet now. Theres no way I can keep him out of them for his nap, as he is still weeing when he's asleep And when you decide to do it, you really have to commit to it. The amount of drains he's peed in is unreal when we've been down town or whatever, even thought it would have been easier to throw a nappy on him for an hour. You would have thought it would make sense for the toilets to be the last thing that are closed in the Arndale, AFTER the car park, but no! lol. Oh and me father came up with an idea of putting a ping pong ball in the toilet bowl as it encourages them to aim for it when peeing so more fun. Then again, he's always been a little strange pmsl |
Re: potty training
if he is not taking to the potty, ask dad or grandad to show him how to use the toilet, little boys or facinated by toilets and will be impressed by standing up to wee.. also, if you use those blue toilet blocks the water turns from blue to green when you go, my little lad loved that and its educational 2... make sure he see's others using the toilet so that he knows that everyone has to do it..
if he still uses his nappy try emptying the contents into the potty, giving him lots of praise while its in there then show him that you flush it away in the toilets.. he needs to see that this is where its supposed to go.. if all else fails..... show him how to use the potty, you can borow my little lad, he will pee anywhere:D just to add that when i have a little one potty training i group them with a bigger kid at toilet time, children want to be like their peers and this will get them using the toilet better than an adult trying to get them to do it.. sticker charts are good too, he gets a small sticker everytime he sits on the pot and a big one for using it, then he can trade the stickers in for something he wants...... |
Re: potty training
Heh, Siobhan has this thing about wanting a wee when we are in the cafe. Only there are no toilets there. She won't just 'crouch' so I found a back alley with a wheelie bin in, opened the lid and put some wipes on the edges. She will happily perch there and wee for England! Only problem is now she won't go on them when they are full so its a fun time.
Commitiment is the word. and don't be embarrased when they do it in teh middle of a shop/cafe/etc. Anyone who's been a parent understands fully whats your going through! BTW, you can get a 'portable' potty that is sort of a toilet seat with bags and a huge absorbant pad. They aren't much from that kids shop on Abbey Street opposite Greg Popes. |
Re: potty training
i had one of them... its a fold out potty with a carrier bag with a big sanitary towel in the bottom... you can get them from wilkinsons 2.
|
Re: potty training
i have a boy same age,
1st of all wait till after winter, with the cold weather outside they will need a wee more often, plus is not good to train them on winter. 2nd, boy are a bit more lazy than girls so like everything it will take time, my son was well lazy, started walking at 17 months. 3rd dont push it cuz the more you trying the worse it gets, they will do it when they feel like it, after all they are babys and thats the way they do it |
Re: potty training
Update:
Jack doesn't wear a nappy in bed now....(he kept taking his nappy off when i put him in bed and NEVER wet himself so now i dont put one on him)...his had 1 accident in 2 weeks! AND.....he has nappies during the day when we go out or if he wants a poo but doesn't wear one in the house and he wees in.....wait for it.....a biscuit tin!(he doesnt like his potty)he's posh though-its an Marks and spencers biscuit tin :D ....im not going to stop him doing this, although Corker and myself can't help laughing when we hear the noise of Jack peeing in a tin :o Thankfully we had finished the xmas biscuits first! Has anyone else had children weeing in something other than a potty? |
Re: potty training

I always found the easiest way was to let my wife do it :D |

Re: potty training
I saw some quality things that I first seen on dragons den - which you can now get in bigger boots shops - they are coloured balls that float in the toilet and when you pee on them the balls turn round and little faces appear ( they are on the other side )..great idea and probably fun for dads too !! - so the incentive is to aim into the toliet, pee on the balls to turn them around to see the faces... sorted !

Use a ping pong ball-its cheaper :) |
Re: potty training
miss kitty, my son was going on 3 before he was potty trained, boys tend to be lazy, The most important thing is not to make a scene about it, he will do it in his own time, i used to think he gonna go to school with a nappy on:obut he finally did it!!
dont worry about it;) |
Re: potty training
RE all my worrying......
Jack started having dry nights a few months ago then about 6/8 weeks ago he just automatically using the toilet to wee......and last week i decided that it was time i stopped the nappies,so i have been putting him in 'big boy pants' and catching him n putting him on the loo when he started straining BUT today he disappeared upstairs and did a poo on the toilet....flushed the chain, washed his hands and didnt even bother telling me he had done it.....although i peeked so i knew ;) so i praised him LOADS and his gona get a special present for his achievement! :D NO MORE NAPPIES WOOHOO :pain30::alright: WELL DONE JACK :D:D:D |

Re: potty training
my nephew Cameron has just turned two and he's taken to it straight away, our kel leaves him without a nappy during the day when she's at home and he goes on it no problem, every child is different, some do and some dont, they will do it in their own time, just persivere (sp?) you cant force them to do it
|
Re: potty training
He's done it!!!!!, My son has used the potty for the 1st time last nite without me even saying nothing, he came to the livingroom and said mum im taking nappy off cuz is full, so i said ok put it on bin, anyway i turned and said if you need a wee potty is there, he says no i dont like it so i though oh i will try anyway.I never put a nappy on him and all of the sudden he went quite sat down on his potty and had a wee without me saying a word, his morning same thing, i took his nappy off and he went straight when he needed it.
Im so glad he has started because he starts nursery in september so he has to be of nappies. Wohooooooo |

Re: potty training
i have 5 kids and each one were differnet ; never push the child if there not ready ; but if you take them out of nappys altogether then don;t go back ; my first just stoped puttin nappys on ; wet in the for a week at nite for two ; twin were the hardest try the same with them didn;t work as well as my first ; they were still wettin 6months after i took them out ; little boy ; won;t go for a number 2 ; unless he had a nappy on and that went on till he was nearly 4 ; my little girl was ok ; she did fine no problems with her but she was still in nappys at nite till she was 3half ; so like i said don;t push them that what i did with the twins and they were the worse ; they;ll do it when they ready ;

I was gonna start trying but im trying to get him off his bottles at nite, he still drinks at least 2 bottles of milk at nite, i have tried really hard but sometimes im so tired (specially now with pregnancy) that i just give in. Once i get him off bottles then i will start, hopefully soon:rolleyes: |
Re: potty training
My likkle one used to have a drink before he went to bed at night, but then I told him that if he wanted to be a big boy and not need a nappy then he couldnt have too much drink becuase he would wee. He cut himself down to just a sip or two, he still takes a drink just doesnt have it.
I tend to give him a decent drink about 1hr before bed time, so he has chance to wee it out before he actually gets in to bed lol |
Re: potty training
Im potty training the twins at the moment, still having the odd accident but think they are finally getting the hang of it :D Only problem I find though is that they often get distracted by the other which is why they are having the accidents lol
|
Re: potty training
i,m hoping to start my little boy potty training just waitin till it warms up and then it makes all the washing and drying easier. my little girl just clicked and she has only wet the bed twice.
|
Re: potty training
They're all so different.
Only thing I was told as a consolation when my son was in nappy still at age of 3 is that everyone learns eventually - you don't see 18 year olds in nappies. |

after potty trainingfor boys stick a ping pong ball in the loo so they have somat to aim at instead of the seat but dont be surprised if you see the little sod running around with the ping pong ball later

Re: potty training
mi bro started his daughter on the potty about 2 weeks ago (my Katie) she's doing really well, we where in town on Thursday and she told me she wanted a wee, we where nowhere near the loo's, so i dragged her across town (no not literally) we got to the loo's and she said 'i was only joking' with the heels i had on i wasnt impressed  she's 3 at the end of this month, 3 going on 33...i was talking to her sister the other day and Katie said to me 'nida don't talk to her, just talk to me' she's a star :D
