have you planted them in the ground yet Davey?

david1 11-05-2008 20:26

Re: growing your own veggies

They are planted in very large plantpots

flashy 11-05-2008 20:27

Re: growing your own veggies

are they staying in the large plant pots or are they eventually going in the ground?

david1 11-05-2008 20:32

Re: growing your own veggies

I will leave them in the large plantpot . Can't be bothered to dig them up. Apart fom which , i dont think i will have much room left to plant them after i get all those plants in out of the greenhouse, I have already weeded and turned over part of my grass in the back garden .

flashy 11-05-2008 20:34

Re: growing your own veggies

ahhhhhhh ok, i dont blame you really, turning your garden over is a nightmare, i started but the i couldnt be bothered with doing the rest so i just covered it in grass seed lol

You need to get a petrol mower if you have a large garden an electric one will just burn out if you have a large one. I got one thats self propelled it just take you with it no effort needed! well not much.

My toms are doing really well: now got a plastic greenhouse ( cheap ) but it does the job and if I stick at growning my own, next year I will go for a real one:
spuds doing really well: and salad leaves all grown in plastic garden bags from the pound shop:
Now going to have a go at making some raised beds....

Re: growing your own veggies

On the* allotments , we used to have a double glazing* firm we knew they took the old frames out of the houses and put the new ones in . then they brought the old ones down to the allotments , and we would build greenhouses out of them . They looked crap but they worked .

Dont give up on your potatoes just yet . That happens sometimes, they may regrow . But it will depend on the type you planted . as i already know, you dont know which type you planted , i can only go off what you post on here!! I had planted a main crop potato last year , and they resprouted..

Flashy you might be watering them too much - might be an idea to water them every other day and not drown them either. What kind of drainage did you put in the bottom of the containers?

Jen i put loads of holes in the bottom of the tubs before i started, like you say, i maybe shouldnt be watering them everyday, a bit buggered today like, its been raining all night ;)

i'll just leave them then Davey, if they grow they grow, if they dont then there isnt much lost, my dad reckons i planted too many in each tub anyway, but hey not to worry lol

planted some spuds in one of those sacks you can get ( meant to be for spuds )
they had loads and loads of green leaves and looked really well:

HOwever when I came to pick them... nothing one spud per plant

what did I do wrong?

I even fed them with the special food for spuds and did everything by the book....

so Aunty Bessy mash it will have to be for tea

there are 3 different types of potato
first early
second early
main crop

you can buy these at garden centres , wilkos and woolies.
I always go for a main crop ie king edward.or desire which is a red main crop potato. they both have a long growing season

Dont think you could buy seed potatoes at this time of year. so i suggest you go to a fruit and veg shop , and ask if they have any that have sprouted? its not the best thing , but its getting a bit late in the season . we will get some smart arse saying "just buy a bag of spuds "

i had three times as many spuds as this but Reece in his infinate moment of wisdom decided to take them around to all my neighbours and he gave most of them away lol

Well so far I've had lettuce, spinach and one cucumber from my efforts, so nothing much yet. However, tomorrow is the big day, when I pick the first of my broad beans. Going to make some ravioli with them.. :)

ooo ive never heard of broad bean ravioli, sounds nice though, i wish i'd planted a lot more than i did, been eating some of the radishes today, they arent right big though, i've just planted some more, they grow all year round aparently, so i'll be getting some more next time i go to wilkies, i love them

the spuds where delicious, all my neighbours thought so too, i'll definately be doing those again next year, might have to plant more next time though

i'll also be planting peas, got a packet this year but it was to late to plant them :( silly me lol

pipinfort 25-07-2008 16:34

Yes , the broadbean ravioli does sound good, at the moment i`m landscaping my garden so i`ve no growing space but i have a large box stuffed full of herbs,(mint, thyme, fennel, flat leaf parsley and corriander) that are growing like mad, my name is down for an allotment and i have been told one will be available in a few months so come this time next year i`m hoping to have a bumper crop of veggies, i`ll be pm-ing you Flashers for some tips by the sound of it....;)

Re: growing your own veggies

lol pipples, i got all my tips from David, he taught me all i know :D

Tin Monkey 26-07-2008 10:22

Re: growing your own veggies

The ravioli is actually a Jamie Oliver recipe, but here it is:

255g podded broad beans plus extra for garnish
1 small handful of mint picked and chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
150g ricotta cheese
1 handful of grated parmesan cheese or to taste
juice of 1 lemon
salt and fleshly ground black pepper
extra chopped mint
olive oil and parmesan cheese to serve

Method
If the broad beans are very small and soft you can use them raw.
If they are medium to large blanch them until just tender in unsalted boiling water (remove the skins after blanching if they are slightly tough).
Smash or finely chop half the beans and leave the other half whole.
Put all the beans into a bowl with the chopped mint (added to taste) olive oil and ricotta.
Lightly fork this through adding the parmesan lemon juice and seasoning to taste.
Stuff the ravioli with the filling and cook them in gently boiling salted water for around 3 to 4 minutes until tender.
Drain carefully.
Serve drizzled with a little extra olive oil and scattered with the extra broad beans some chopped mint and some freshly grated or shaved parmesan.

Obviously you have to make/buy sheets of pasta to stuff with the filling. I make my own, but you could buy the fresh lasagne sheets and do the same thing.

I don't think I'll have time to do it today as I'd forgotten that I'm going to the football, but it's definitely on the menu for tomorrow. ;)

Making your own pasta is pretty easy and it makes a nice change from the normal stuff. The broad bean recipe does sound good doesn't it? It should be even nicer when made from these!! :D

I was vegetarian when I was married, mainly because it was easier all round. Now I do eat meat, but still enjoy making vegetarian food. I was looking for something that would showcase my beans and thought that this fit the bill. :D

pipinfort - the recipe is from the book 'Cook With Jamie'.

The Italians make big ravioli and I was following suit. You can do that when they don't have to fit in a can. ;)

It was time for my garlic to come up today and free up some space. It's already strung up and hanging in my shed. :)
