Have your drinking habits changed

Well I've been a drinker for longer than I care to remembr, but my tastes have very much changed over the years. When I started off I was a mixrd drinker, then went onto Bitter, (Lions) when I lived in Hassy I got a taste for Wilsons Bitter, then Boddies, in the eighties I went on Larger for a while, then when I came home again to Ossy in 86 I went on Thwaites Mild and have been on it ever since. But I think the bigest change in my drinking habits is that I have now got a taste for wine, I always have good stock in and have become quite keen over the last 10 years, in fact I have a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio by my side has i'm writting this post. I have to say though that I only drink White wine, as like a lot of asthmatics I'm alergic to red, go on then whats your poison and how have your habits changed over the years, I must just add for our younger members I've been at it for nearly 50 years

I don't think I have two days drinking teh same thing.

Ales of all kinds,
Guiness orginal ( not keen on canned draught but proper draught is OK)
Lager ( prefer teh 'stronger brands, Stella, Kronen, warsteiner etc)
Wine(red white and rose)
Spirits, Gin vodka, whiskey, brandy, rum, liqueurs,

You name it I'll probably drink it! :D

Well entwisi you've covered the full gamut, I never said anything about my bad habits, just the normal ones, but I can see where cashy' coming from, its only when you can't carry on with your usual habits that it hurts the most, but I'll tell you what I admire a guy like cashy who realised that life is better than looking into the bottom of a pint glass or short bottle, your a star cashy, and any young uns reading this, it can happen to you, the thing is booze wasn't my down fall it was the fags, i gave up 30 years ago but then the damage had been done, and I always said it won't happen to me, it did and just like cashy now i'm suffering, beware it can happen to you, think about it, take evrything in moderasion and remember when your twenty the worlds your oyster, when you get to sixty and your past catches up with, you beware

Yes...my drinking habits have changed.......I have found that over the years I am much less tolerant of alcohol...it affects me much sooner and the effects......the not so pleasant ones, last longer.......so I drink much less alcohol now.
I actually prefer a good strong mug of leaf tea.

When I used to work in the pubs, I would drink pints of larger, bitter & cider, and I quite liked the odd pint of guiness.

But these days I mostly drink Rose wine,

I used to drink 20/20 (before i was allowed in pubs) then went onto bacardi breezers / bacardi & coke, realised that these were giving me hangovers, went onto lager, this had the same effect, went on vodka and coke or WKDS and stay on these now, no hangover (although occasionally i do go on lager and pay for it the following day!)

an interesting little wander on this, when Lager was first introduced in Lancs pubs (Harp) was nothing else available at the time, i was young n did try it n quite liked it (was more fashionable than owt) after a few weeks, there was a article in the evening telegraph, explaining n asking WHY lager was cheaper to brew than bitter/mild etc yet Dearer in price, after that i Never drank another pint- no-body rips cashy off.;)

Lager for me, pref cold Fosters, but I have been known to indulge in the odd glass of wine , either red if with a meal or white if not. Am partial to a nice gin and tonic too, esp in Spain !

Before I was old enough used to be a bottle of Thunderbird wine and a couple of cans of Lynx lager (was cheap)
Then as I got to legal age became
Bitter
Lager
Newcastle Brown
Pernod & Cider
Benne & Hot (Winter Thing)
Guinness & Cider (poor man's velvet)
Brandy & Babycham

These days tends to be Lager & WKD

Although must admit to starting to sup Shandy more often must be a mid life crisis:eek:

My tipple used to be scotch and dry ginger but, for the last 10 years or so, even the smell of whisky makes me nauseous though I can, happily, drink Baileys. My drink of choice now is wine, preferably red (cabernet sauvignon goes down very well). When the weather is hot, or I'm just plain thirsty, I like cider and my "short" drink is vodka - but elongated with coke or cranberry juice.

I am a constant companion of Captain Morgan Rum with diet coke and ice.
In the past I would have drunk anything that was bought for me....now as I have to pay for it I'm a bit selective.

Haveing been in the hospiality trade for over 40 yrs, I was in a culture of drinking , it being available all the time, so that meant every day. then one night 8 yrs ago got caught on the breathalizer. There and then I said enough is enough and went cold turkey, havent had a drink since. Went for a check up not long after and doctor said the alcohol had knocked my pancreas around over the years, so I am type 2 diabetic. There are thousands of stories like mine. I never thought Id make it to 50 never mind 60, and feeling better than I did in my 20s. Another Coffin dodger, or only the good die young.

I have been the same for a few years,Baileys for when im in the house chilling out after a stressful day/week,blue WKDs when i go out(i just drink water on a lot of nights out now),Pernod occasionally, and Corkers cans of whatever his got when he aint looking.

Its really cheap for me to go out these days cos i figured i act like i have had a few and feel better when im sober n when i drink it calms me down (seriously), so alot of the time i stay on tap water when i go out(yet im the loudest one)....people are surprised n take the mickey but i dont feel bad for notdrinking or for not spending in a pub...why should i?-whoever im out with it paying over the odds for their drinks anyway.

Diet Coke contains aspartamine - that is just one of the several toxic chemicals in the ingredients.

http://www.theecologist.org/archive_...content_id=636
extract-
Although Diet Coke has a strong association with sport and health, it is actually a worrying mixture of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic high intensity sweeteners (aspartame and acesulfame K), tooth and bone destroying acids (phosphoric acid) and DNA damaging colourings (sulphite ammonia caramel), as well as psychoaddictive caffeine and other undisclosed ‘flavourings’.
It also contains sodium benzoate, which can be broken down into the listed carcinogen benzene in the presence of strong acids, such as the citric acid found in this product.

Re: Have your drinking habits changed

I was 11 when alcohol first passed my lips. It was in the middle of the winter of ’47 on a train with no heating and several hours to our destination. My uncle poured a tot of Vodka into a cup of lemon tea to warm me up. It worked. Not only did it warm me up but magically shortened the journey. Or was that because I went to sleep?

At 16 the Australian Inn supplied me with my first half pint of mild.

Until my 20th birthday, when I got my first tot of Navy rum, it was generally mild but not much of it or down south Watneys.

The Navy rum was something to behold and it was issued at 12:00 noon after being drawn from the rum locker at 11:00am to the pipe of “Up Spirits”. Although some wag would sometimes add, “Stand fast the Holy Ghost”.

We, on the lower deck, had our rum watered down with two parts of water to one part of rum. That might sound a bit weak until you consider the strength of the neat stuff, how much we got and when we got it. The neat rum was at least 150 degrees proof (some say it was as high as 180) and each tot was one eighth of a pint. Watered down our tot of rum ended up as three eighths of a pint of liquid around 50 degrees proof and on an empty stomach. Imagine the effect.

Ashore Woods’ Navy rum at 100 degrees proof with two parts of coke added made a pleasant drink if a slice of lemon was added. Black Cat rum obtainable only down south had the same taste as a neat tot but not the strength. As did Old Mariner (in a square bottle) available up here only at Thwaites’ pubs and off licenses.

More than two years in Capetown introduced me to Brandy and Canada Dry ginger ale (horse’s neck) and white wine, the drier the better.

Although I had my alcoholic moments I was never a drinker as such and quit completely after my second heart attack.

Michael Green, author of course sailing and many other art of course, books, at the beginning of each book would put a definition describing that particular sportsman, in 'The art of course drinking', he defined a course drinker as:-

Someone that turns up at a friends house unexpectedly, all the friend has to offer is a very cheap cooking sherry, the course drinker accepts the glass, sniffs it, knocks it back in one, pulls a disgusted face and says, "God, that was awful!". As he hold the glass out for a refill!

Started when I was around 16 on brown-and-mild splits (half a mild and a bottle of brown ale in a pint glass for the uninitiated). Moved over to lager in my thirties, much to the disgust of my old fella ("that's not real beer!"). More recently, found that lager was giving me headaches, so, over the last year, I've started supping real ale, which goes down very well indeed. Bring on the Black Sheep!

On Saturday mornings on his way home from work (Saturday mornings was part of the working week in those days) my dad would bring home a bottle of Mackeson’s stout, where he would pour it into a glass and stick a red hot poker into it. I was allowed to drink some of the froth.

I did have a spell where Black Velvet tickled my palette, or at least the poor man’s version, being Cider and Guinness instead of Champagne and Guinness.

I started drinking when I was sixteen or so. Having to avoid Church and the Blackburn Road area so that my dad and his many mates didn´t catch me, I travelled to Burnley and Rising Bridge.........well, for the first few months anyway!!

I started off on half of Double Diamond with the odd tasters like brandy and babycham, gin and orange and that awful barley wine.

Now that I´m carting on a bit, I usually stick to Dorada Especial.........a nice strong bottled lager. At home I like a brandy or three before bed!
