Any Old Iron

Can anyone advise me on how to renovate my steam iron It was fine the last time I used it - But that was 38 years ago and now it just won't glide over the material.I think I may need to remove the layers of rust.Any advice?

Eeh by gum lad. You were lucky to have a steam iron back in 1970..was still warming a sad iron up on the stove mesen...

And if you think I'm joking... I'm not.., still had a mangle in't back yard as well:D
New one about a fiver at Asda..
Don't need to take it to the tip, leave it in the back yard, it'll soon disappear...our car ramps did. :(
