Took the words right out of my mouth neil, haha. Otherwise emzy, a stanley knife, a good straight edge, spray adhesive and silicone.
If you are not comfortable with that, get the cushionfloor and give that nice bloke round the corner a shout to help with it on Sunday. :D:D

I was better at DIY than the three I had.
.....floor and wall tiling, building fireplaces, and even road repairs (when I lived up Belthorn)

Many men are DIY disaster zones - if you want a job done right and within a year you need to do it yourself

I was only joking, I don't see jobs as man or woman jobs, just jobs.

That's because you have an inferiority complex about being female and constantly feel the need to tell us all how good a man you would have made.

On the contrary - we females are the superior gender.
Men function as drones:p

I put down my own lino years ago and never used adhesive, easier to get up when ya replace it:);)

derekgas 29-09-2008 14:34

Re: How do you???

The adhesive makes fitting easier, and you will have no air bubbles in it, silicone keeps any water from getting under it, you can get both from any reasonable diy shop (by reasonable, I dont mean b & Q and the likes). *can here a knocking, think its the door*

The diy shop under the bridge is ok emzy, at the main roundabout!

Morecambe Ex Pat 29-09-2008 15:31

Re: How do you???

Prepare the floor before you lay it. Make sure the floor is fairly smooth and has no high spots as these will show through the finished job. Ask about adhesive where you get the covering from, they usually sell the appropriate stuff for the type of surface you are going onto.
Don't be tempted with the paper thin stuff.

emzy 29-09-2008 15:35

Re: How do you???

Will have to see whats under the carpet to see what kind of floor it is, already have lino in kitchen which is glued down so not sure about taking that up,

my floor is uneven, thats something that i will have to live with, doesnt really bother me, aint spending more than i need to (and can afford)

Morecambe Ex Pat 30-09-2008 06:59

Re: How do you???

It shouldn't costs a lot to level most floors, just some elbow grease usually (available in various sizes and many colours lol).
If the floor is wood, make sure it is properly secured to the joists, use screws if you have to. Wooden floors have a habit of squeaking when you put a permanent floor covering down.

Be really careful if you are screwing down floorboards. many older houses have electric cables and pipes sat in notches on top of the joists. You don't want to screw through a cable or pipe. Don't think you are safe if you keep away from the middle of the floorboard either. As a rule of thumb you are but I have seen cables right at the edge of the board before.

Re: How do you???

I suspect that you are laying it in a bathroom.
I have done this once (successfully)
I didn't glue it down
The way of making it easier, is to use the floorcovering that you lift up, as a template on the one you are putting down.(leave a 'seam allowance' as you would when dressmaking - and trim it when down)
Fitting round pedestals is tricky - you will need to cut it so that the join is behind the pedestal

ps fitting vinyl tiles is easier but they wont work well if the floor is uneven

Should be easier then because there are no 'curvy' shapes to fit it around.
I dont know why the men recommended glueing it  - if the room is so big that it will have to go down in more than one piece, I would use double sided sticky tape at the join.

The rooms long and narrow so luckily no joins needed :D
