Netbook

Acer Aspire One cheap at Asda for £150 down from £219. Best value for money netbook around at that price. Can upgrade RAM to 1.5GB for £8.50 although it requires almost completely dismantling the laptop so not for the faint-hearted.

Bought mine last night.

How are you finding the operating system?

I recently bought a Samsung NC10 which is a 10.2" netbook, same processor as the AA1 but with 1GB RAM Windows XP Home and a 160GB hard drive. It has an awesome battery and will give you 5 hours, if not more.

Snap. Battery life is brilliant on these, regularly get 6 hours.

Re: Netbook

Keyboard is great too except the backslash key is in the wrong place but I am getting used to it. Screen is very bright as well. I often have it turned below half and find it easy to see still.

Richard has one of those netbooks like yours Samf, can you actually buy them to run windows or are they only on Linux?

Any info you give me ahead will help me research if i need to download a driver etc.

Even sop much as what colour iit is can help

Re: Netbook

You can install windows on them Shaz yes. It might be simpler for you both if it had Windows on if you have never used Linux before.

In fact a lot of people have been returning Linux based netbooks to places like PCWorld and carphonewarehouse because they found Linux to be not quite so Windows like as the sales people said.

I think they have a small cut down version on as well but Ian will tell you better than I could.

If its the e220 its supported out the box. You may just need to configure the dial up tool at worst.

if you really want to test it i will call round. Tbh if oits for next xmas i would wait as the new intel atom cpu will be out and about a lot more and there are some cracking machines lined up for release.

Re: Netbook

have you tried actualy putting something like Ubuntu on it? I've just shoved it on a HP Mini Note ( 2133) and it runs lovely with Gnome. Its only got a VIA VGA chip in it so no fancy 3D but for what these things are aimed at its spot on.

It also even runs the propriety Broadcom Wifi card using teh recently released STA drivers.

I was actually really impressed with it as a nice small footprint piece of kit.

I have considered it - lookied at the ubuntu documentation for it and found this to be the current situation:

Code:

Fully functional:

  • Suspend / Resume            [ works out of box ]

  • Video (with desktop effects)[ works out of box ]

  • Wireless Networking        [ ath_pci loads by default instead of ath5k, but the fix is easy (see below)]

  • wifi power saving          [ works out of box ]

  • Wired Networking            [ works out of box ]

  • Webcam                      [ works out of box ]

  • USB                        [ works out of box ]

  • Silent Fan                  [ fan works, silent?? needs scripts ]

  • Audio [ semi-working (output only), internal mic DOES NOT WORK on 2.6.27 *; audio output over speakers broken since kernel 2.6.27.7 ]

  • Card Reader power saving    [ not tested ]

Partial Function:

  • wifi kill switch            [ working, but no notification ]

  • Card Readers, Bios 3109    [ Work out of the box, but write errors after suspend and on SDHC cards]

  • Card Readers, Bios 3305    [ Pre 2.6.27.7: Only right card reader works after setpci described above; no SDHC support]

  • Card Readers, Bios 3305 [ 2.6.27.7: Both card readers work again after setpci described above; no SDHC support, but at least the insertion of cards is automatically detected.]

Not Functional:

  • Hibernate on A110L [ Seems to work for for some if there is a swap partition that is big enough so we can suspend to it. Test carefully before using!. ]

Wireless module

There has been some confusion as to which wireless driver provides the best performance and reliability. I have found the following:

  • madwifi from kernel (ath_pci) - does not attach to hardware.

  • ath5k from intrepid backports (ath5k) - connects to hardware, but experiences disconnects on medium to heavy wireless activity, and can not communicate with some AP's using WPA2 PSK.

  • madwifi-hal from snapshots.madwifi.org (ath_pci) - Everything works.

Since I am a fan of fluxbox anyway I am happy running this tweaked version of linpus for now - might change when Ubuntu is fully compatible :)

entwisi 17-01-2009 20:27

Re: Netbook

I've used madwifi a number of times so its fully functional or certainly as much as your linpus will be if not more. (i've read soem rather iffy articles about it but hey, I've not used it personally so can't say for sure).

You can always dual boot it you know :D

Thats probably the best idea and what I do with mine

Ubuntu and XP ;)

The XP gets used most of the time because the trackpad is rubbish in Ubuntu. It does work though, well most of it. It has the same mic issues mentioned for the AA1 and the function keys are iffy, Screen brightness is poor and changes by itself - sort of.

Its a shame because my initial intention was to use it mainly on Ubuntu and only use XP when I had too.

Linpus is doing everything I want it to atm - found a pretty good guide online on getting fluxbox set up (harder than normal, but easy when you know how) Have all the built in programs working only problem now is keyring is active so im having to enter wireless key everytime i reboot - fixing that atm. Also for some reason can't chane the theme in firefox from this disuisting grey =\

Thanks for the tip-off on this. Mrs Kevolution has been eyeing up this machine for a few weeks so when I told her a quick visit to Asda was in order.

Seems to be working well at the moment although we're still trying to get to get the QQ messenger system properly installed and working. I'd probably have it fixed by now but she's discovered the joys of Frozen Bubble.

The battery life is a good point - but that is pretty much all you are getting for double the cost, other than an outdated OS.

The Samsung is the best netbook out there but overpriced for what it is IMO

Re: Netbook

Whilst on the subject of battery I think I will run some tests tomorrow- managed 2 and a half hours running spotify through wine, updating the software, using firefox, acroread and UIM(messenger) Pretty heavy usage and it lasted 15-30 mins more than it does just browsing the internet using the shipped WM. I'm going to charge it overnight and see how long it lasts running idle.

hey guys

just got a couple of questions re: acer netbook

Q1. If a problem occurs with the unit will you be able to deal with Asda or go through manufacturer

Q2. to anyone who has bought this laptop can you check if the code below appears anywhere on the box, and if it does where
(it corresponds to the model number and spec)

AOA150-Ab LU.S050A.105

Q1. Legally your contract is with the store, not the manufacturer and legally it is the store that you would take it back to if the good was faulty, or becomes faulty before a reasonable length of time (Section 14(I think S14 anyway), Sale of Goods Act 1974) However lots of companies ignore this law as most people do not know their rights. I think Asda's return policy is 28 days no quibble and then they will try and fob you off the manufacturer like most big companies do, however, if you took them to court over it you would win everytime.

Q2. Yes that is the model number.

Welcome to AccyWeb pal.

Picked one of these up today, nice handy bit of kit, ideal for what I need it for, not too sure about Limpus yet, that might have to go, just configured everything and its working well, just got to get it to connect with the Omnia now so I can use it away from home, It's not playing ball at the min
I got 160gb as well, had to take one back though, wouldn't boot up at all, don't think the software had been loaded onto the machine

You've used QQ? I'm mildly impressed. We did find a Linux version of QQ but it gave us a couple of problems so we've shelved that until I can take the time to translate and look over the documentation.

The built in messenger with the aspire is actually quite nice, not quite as flexible as Pidgin (which I normally use) but that little bit slicker.

Your average Windows user does not have to do that. Its just those that mess about with it that do.

The restart thing is true, it even does it itself after updates

If you are going to use it as your only PC you might find a 9" screen a bit on the small side. Mine has a 10" screen is is fine for me but my wife thinks it is way too small to use. Maybe you should pop into PCWorld and have a play with them before you think about buying to see what you think

Re: Netbook

Why not do teh sensible thing then. :D

Plug it into your big LCD TV(if you have one) via teh VGA adaptor and use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

When at home it makes sense to use what you have about you. on teh move its small and convienient, it doesn't have to be used that way though!

Neil 04-02-2009 08:56

Re: Netbook

A keyboard and mouse on your knee sounds hard work to use. Beside I bought my netbook as all the PC's and TV's are usually in use by everyone else :D

Not very private though is it when everyone else is reading what you are typing on you TV

What would 1024x600 from an AA1 look like on a 40" screen? I can't find any info saying it can do higher than that after a quick look.

entwisi 04-02-2009 12:12

Re: Netbook

The graphics card will match whatever your native LCD screen res is. Its many many years since we had to worry about Gfx cards not hitting high resolutions.

I run my laptop sometimes through teh LCD ( think easy way to do photo presentations to family etc) and it runs at the native res (1368x768 IIRC). Its surprisingly clear and easy to read whilst still having enough estate to run things properly.

why should a keyboard/mouse(ot trackball etc) be much different to a eee pc, they are larger and probably heavier? You can also get keyboards with built in trackballs or touchpads.

Hi
I have an Acer Aspire One on linux. No big memory only 8gb. . I wanted to use the webcam facililty to tape myself and put on blog etc, but i find that it records but with no sound. Has anybody else had this problem?

Also somebody mentioned earlier about flash drives. I bought a 32gb one and didnt work (Corsair 32GB Flash Survivor USB 2.0 Flash Drive - CMFUSBSRVR-32GB)!!! Gutted.

Bought a 4gb one from Tesco yesterday, Sandisk Cruzer £8 and that works if that helps anyone.

Some of you guys helped me earlier in the year with my netbook. Would have loved XP on it but it was a present....
