Slow Cooker

My big sis has just bought me a slow cooker for my birthday, i make a lot of stews and home cooked food anyway but i just usually use a casserole dish and slam it in the oven.

She bought it me to save on gas, it doesnt use much leccy either so its really economical

what i was wondering was.....other than stews and casseroles, what else can i cook in it?

:D

If you google ' crockpot recipes ' you will find hundreds of recipes
I recall a thread where TinMonkey asked just the same question

Lol, I'm just this minute going upstairs to box mine up for the charity shop, along with a foot spa.

Mine was a Christmas present when I was a student at Liverpool in 1984. It was very useful, and made good caseroles whilst I was busy with a Leg O'Mutton sleeve. Since then it's been on a trip to London, Glasgow, and now to Ossy, and has never been used.

After not using it for quarter of a century it might be time to part company.

Is it a little one?
Mine is too big for my needs

PS vibrating foot spas are great used dry for foot and leg cramps - mine is permenantly plugged in ready at bedside

No, it's quite big, and the slow cooker lifts off and underneath is hot plate thingy you can griddle on. It's in good condition considering it's age. It anyone wants it, or the foot spa (used once), if you pm me before Tuesday your welcome to them.

There is a small one in B&M down town, just big enough for two: I am thinking of getting one:

Re: Slow Cooker

They had them at B&M in Morecambe during the summer.
Darwendosser got one - £10
When I went and asked, they had sold out.
It looks good too -shiny steel - I may come out of hibernation to get one

I've got one of the big oval ones, it's just gone on now, with broth in it. Will have it for tea tomorrow and freeze the rest. :)

Would very much like to offer a home for the foot spa if i can afford it . hope it would help my arthritis !! about the crockpot , one of the best inventions for not having to stand over it , put every thing in turn it on and a few hours later all great !! i have cooked rice pudding in mine as well as the usual stews ,and curries. you can use the cheapest cuts of meat and they always come out tender so cuts down on cost , washing up and time in the kitchen !

Re: Slow Cooker

never understood this 'slow cooking" thing , why dont you just use your regular roasting pan (with lid) or brown baking dish with tin plate lid and turn the gas mark down . Its not magic , how do you think your Grandmas who worked in the mills managed to produce an evening meal every day

Neil 26-01-2009 07:15

Re: Slow Cooker

I think the idea of using a slow cooker is you are only heating the food as opposed to heating a big oven so they are supposedly more energy efficient. Also no gas to leave on all day so when you return from the mill your house has not burnt down :)

have doubts about the energy effincency (sp?) of an aluminium pot v an asbestos lagged oven which was probably also surrounded by a 'maiden' used for drying clothes . you young uns don't know your born ...;) :D

It's ideal if you're out all day. Bung in the stuff whilst eating your breakfast, et voila, it's ready when you return home in the evening.

As others have said, they use very little power. A good thing when our utility bills have risen a hundred fold in the last year or so.

You're welcome to mine if you can collect it from Ossy, before I take it to Sane tomorrow. Unused, box a bit battered from moving house, made by Scholl. I don't want anything for it, just pm me if you could make use of it.

Re: Slow Cooker

Use mine all the time .... just toss stuff in and come back later .... great for moose meat, which tends to be a little on the tough side ....

And they are dirt cheap ... I have two of different sizes.

A good companion for the slow cooker is the George Forman grill ... not exactly like the bbq, but good enough in winter when the bbq is under a snowbank.

Re: Slow Cooker

i wizzed my George Forman grill, i grill everything under my cooker grill anyway, i didnt think my George Forman ever cooked anything properly, it was always crispy on the outside and uncooked in the middle

Re: Slow Cooker

Maybe the grill you had was set to English standards of cooking .... that's why the food is burnt on the outside and raw in the middle:eek: .... you should ask for one that's set to Canadian standards;):D

I do all sorts in my slow cooker. but one of the best things is chicken it keeps all the flavours and juices inside the meat. fish is another good one. I wouldnt be without it . Its great to just throw everything the night before and switch on first thing. have had some really lush meals from it.
As for the fondou lol... still experimenting. but did a cheese one last wekk and it went down a treat...

I have made curries and also boiled a gammon joint in mine a few times and comes out really well - not at all dry. Why not look on the internet for recipes - there will be lots of inspiring dishes for you to try.....

Re: Slow Cooker

What temperature do those slow cookers cook at?

MargaretR 30-01-2009 14:31

Re: Slow Cooker

They must have liquid - which reaches a slow simmer - no steam escapes
...so the answer must be 'boiling point'

emzy 30-01-2009 14:34

Re: Slow Cooker

I bought one today, am looking forward to experimenting with it :D

Not really:D
A pressure cooker cooks fast, halving cooking time
A slow cooker needs a long time, but uses less fuel
