Travel Sickness Remedies

For as long as i can remember, i've always been travel sick, cars, buses, coaches, boats etc (but not on trains)

when i was a child my mum used to get some tablets off the doctor for me called 'avomine' and they used to work for me

i went to Darwen on the bus the other day and i felt really sick by the time i got there, my sister said i went that white she thought i was going to pass out, now i dont get sick everytime i go on a bus, just sometimes...anyway, we went into Boots in Darwen and i asked if they had anything for travel sickness, the nice lady behind the counter gave me something called 'travel calm'....so i read the leaflet and took one....OH MY GOD...within 10 minutes i felt like i was stoned, this lasted for about 3 hours, my mouth went dry and my eyes went funny, but i didnt feel ill on the bus journey home, i'm not sure which effect i liked the most, the sickness or the stoned feeling

anyway, i wont be taking them again

can anyone please tell me if there is anything out there that can prevent my travel sickness? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE :D

When I was flying, (as in going on holiday Neil) A bottle of white wine did it for me, but they wouldn't let you on board these days:D

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

Ginger is meant to be very good, nibble ginger biscuits(i'd have said nuts but you know what Neil is liek :D )

Some people swear by magnets on wrist bands ( for travel and morning sickness)

It usually also helps to focus on the horizon outside the vehicle i.e.on something known to be 'static' so your brain can work out what motion is actually being applied to your body. If all you can see is the already moving vehicle your brain gets confused as your eyes tell you you aren't moving but your balance says you are.

thats the thing Ian, i HAVE TO look infront whenever i travel, cant be doing with people yapping on in my ear, i have to concentrate, can't read or send texts on the bus either, Reece knows that if he sits behind me on the bus not to talk to me, bless him

i'll get some of those wrist thingies, and stock up on ginger biscuits

You can still get Avomine, just ask in a pharmacy and they will order it in for you, it's not usual stock but still available.

Its mostly caused by looking out of the window at your side, the images are flashing past to fast for your brain to register them properly.

I had it as a kid, told to sit at the front and look straight ahead, sickness gone. I also had the same sitution fishing off a boat from Fleetwood, when I looked down to bait my hooks, felt queasy, looked at the horizon and it went away.

The most effective tablets I've tried are called 'JoyRides', they don't make you feel drowsy & can be taken either before the journey or if & when you start to feel queasy.

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

I had it as a child and just thinking about it now I began to relive the nausea. You have my deepest sympathy.

I tried searching a herbal remedy for you and it came up with ginger and mint, which have been mentioned already.

If you have only tried ginger biscuits and polo mints, you haven't given them a fair trial. Try chewing a piece of root ginger for maximum effect.

I had to endure some strange rituals, such as wrapping brown paper round my belly next to my skin and sitting on brown paper - didn't work:rolleyes:

Crystallised root ginger is brilliant for nausea and queasiness.

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

It's a different kind of nausea though Susie, its very strange, can't really explain it, my dad has just ordered me some avomine tablets off Amazon, i used them as a child so we'll see how they go

MoreJoe 09-02-2012 19:59

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

Dramamine, Driminate, Gravol, Gravamin, Vomex, Vertirosan, are all commercially available over the counter anti nausea and motion sickness treatments. Your local naming convention may differ. They are all derivatives of Dimenhydrinate so only take the recommended dose. Good luck and keep traveling.

Margaret Pilkington 09-02-2012 20:38

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

Avomine is good and so is Phenergan...they both contain Promethazine( I don't think you would be able to buy Phenergan over the counter you used to be able to, but for some reason now Pharmacists are not keen to dispense without a script from a doctor).
Shaz, if you have to travel why don't you see your doctor...or the nurse at your practice and get them to prescribe something for you?
If you have tried all the other home remedies and they haven't worked, then it would make sense to get a script.

flashy 10-02-2012 06:47

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

Thanx Marg, you're a star, it's not a case of having to travel, it's a case of wanting to travel, i'm fine on trains, it's just on the bus and in a car, i don't go to the docs very often, my dad ordered the avomine simply because i have had them before, a long time ago like but it's worth a try

Margaret Pilkington 10-02-2012 07:54

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

They should work but they will probably make you sleepy....so I hope someone else is going to be doing the driving :D

As for the sickness bands, if they don't work, then they aren't in the right position(or aren't snug/tight enough). You need to move them up a little bit or down a little bit.
One of the anaesthetists that I worked with, was absolutely brilliant at detemining where pressure should be applied to stop nausea and vomiting. We had a lady who had persistent pregnancy sickness and he came along and showeed her where to apply pressure........her nausea and vomiting stopped just like that (click of the fingers).........from then on, she was able to control the probelm herself and go home.
It was amazing.

Hope you get sorted Shaz.

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

Yikes!!! When have they taken Phenergan off general sale??

I bought some for Sparks a couple of years ago and they have been absolutely invaluable. Fair enough, they do knock him out but believe me, he needs it on flights. I hope he's plenty left.....

Margaret Pilkington 10-02-2012 15:01

Re: Travel Sickness Remedies

I haven't been able to buy them over the counter for at least a couple of years. I now get mine off the internet........I don't use them very often.
I was told it is down to the Pharmacist in the branch of the chemists which makes the decision as to whether they will sell them as OTC meds.....and believe me, most don't. They want you to go and get a script for them.

I am prescribed Stugeron by my doc when I have to travel any distance or fly. Looked it up and its "Cinnarizina" -works on blood flow to the brain and stops vertigo -good for arterial schlerosis -should probably take it more often!:D

(I'm never sick when I travel though -just get disorientated and feel ropey.)
