Reclaimed Timber

I need some reclaimed timber, big chunky stuff to make a fire surround out of. Prefer it to be solid so probably looking for 8" x 8" ish and some smaller bits.

If its very expensive I might make it in sections.

Does anyone know where locally I might buy some?

Have a look for demolition experts in the yellow pages Neil, they usually have lots of reclaimed timer

Try this mob:

York Stone Flags, York Stone Slabs, Reclaimed Granite Setts

They're up in Altham

Try Connolly demolition. At the stone yard Coach Rd Church. They generally have reclaimed timber.

Might be the wrong size for you but reclaimed railway sleepers might fit the bill - I have used them and once the surface is cleaned off they look good.

I will try those thanks everyone.

I have read that railway sleepers are soaked in creosote which might be a bad idea for a fire surround

Creosote has been on the banned list for quite a while I believe and never soaked very far into most woods, so when cleaned up for use in a house there would very little creosote remaining. I did assume that a wood surround would be approx 2 - 3 feet or so from the fire throat. Closer than that and you could create a problem anyway.
Obviously a great deal depends on your design for the surround.

Railway sleepers are pressure treated with creosote so it goes almost all the way through the timber;)

Noticed a place just past St James Church in Altham - Oak hand cut beams. On right hand side on the first left hand bend after the Church towards Padiham. Couldn't get a telephone number but you should be able to find them in the directory.

I know that firm, had stuff from them, they are expensive. It will set you back a good few quid for the size you want.
