I had an Abyssinian guinea pig, KP. Black and white, he was a real character . Loved him to bits, very loud at the old "wheeking" noise, threw shavings everywhere, didn't like being bathed and constantly got mites . Loved him though, he was about 6 when he succumbed to a stroke, very sad.:(

I have 2. They are quite easy pets but do need a lot of cleaning out. A major bit of advice when buying females, make sure to ask how long the pet shop has had them and if there's one looking a bit 'full' step away. They breed very early in their little lives and if not separated by 3 weeks they will get preggers by their brothers/fathers. Chances are if one is pregnant the others from the litter will be!
They are very social animals and are happier in same sex pairs if matched when young. 2 boars will fight if they aren't brought up together. I have found that sows live longer and boars are smellier! Hope that helps a bit. PM me if you like. I've had pigs all me life!

You will also need to buy plenty of wood shavings for the bottom of the cage, & they scatter it around so be prepared for constant use of the vac, they are also short sighted & very timid, ones enough.
I wouldn't bother, they are more trouble than their worth, & can live a long time, so take future commitments into it as well, wil you want them in five years time.

Eh, you leave the Guin Guin Guinster alone. She's very menacing - sits on her house staring. If they made guineas rotweiller size, they'd be well scary.
i got a book on keeping them from the big pet shop in Ossy and use that as guidance. One thing they've not to be fed is lettuce. people treat them like rabbits and they've different dietry requirements. Guin came from a litter of 6 and they're all dead part from her because people took them and didnt know how to look after then properly.
Guin Guin Guinster is quite entertaining - she pop corns (jumps like she;s a nervous affliction) when she's happy; she & my dog have a routine every morning where she has a hissy fit; she asks for food and knows when the fridge door is opened. how she's learnt to associate fridge door with food i dont know. amazing.

I think its just ice-berg lettuce you cant feed them because it contains toxins that upset there stomachs and other types of lettuce are ok.

Ahhh KP used to do the pop-corn thing, it was really funny! He used to start wheeking when ou opened his food container too and he would rattle the waterbottle for attention! He used to like carrots and bits of cabbage, the odd biscuit, he was a real character, I cried when he shuffled off, poor old KP !

We got my daughter a white long haired(Abyssinian?) when she was little. Called Dougall(obvious resemblance) it was a character, would run around the room 'wheeking' and jumping straight up in the air for joy. Always demanding attention.
She grew out of it and as they do make a mess I retired it in its cage to the garage. It would shout for attention every time it saw us but except for cleaning and feeding we didn't bother with it very much. Went in one day and it was dead-6 years old but I always wondered if it died from loneliness and a broken heart. Even now I still feel bad about it- any animal is for life! Remember that before you commit to one.

thanks all,

we got 2 boys from a lady who no longer wanted them, 6 months old apparently. unfortunately one has mites and has scratched himself blood raw on his back and under his chin. We took them to the vet on Saturday who gave them spot on ( 1 just the drops on the back, the one thats suffering got an injection ). thing is he is still suffering from them biting so I can see another visit coming up......

They are called "Jamie" ( siobhans choice) and "Babbett" ( Josephs attempt at saying Rabbit! :D )

I've ordered some Vet Bed from eBay to put down as they came with lots of sawdust/shavings which we've been told is actually not that good for them...

If Siobhan has her way I'm sure they would be made to use her ZhuZhu Pets accessories....

they live in a nice large cage inside but they will get to play in the meadow outside the front door :D (hopefully they will eat enough grass that I dont have to mow the bleeding thing any more!!)
